Most fish sauces have 'unsafe' levels of preservatives
funky_house posted a question in Living in Thailand
BANGKOK: -- Most fish sauces and many mixed fish sauces on store shelves across the country contain levels of preservatives that fail to meet safety standards, according to the results of a study released Thursday. The Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) surveyed the quality of fish sauces and mixed fish sauces sold in fresh markets and department stores nationwide. It collected 471 samples produced by 118 manufacturers in February and March. Of the samples, 242 were fish sauces priced at Bt10-Bt45, and 229 were mixed fish sauces costing Bt6-Bt18. The survey found that only 62.8 per cent of fish sauces and 37.1 per cent of mixed fish sauces met safety standards. For fish sauces, price didn't appear to be a guarantee of quality. The study found examples of sub-standard products among both expensive (Bt30-Bt40) and inexpensive (Bt10-Bt20) fish sauces. About 45.4 per cent of fish sauces priced at Bt21-Bt29 did not meet the standards. "We found that most fish sauces and [many] mixed fish sauces contained a level of glutamic acid relative to nitrogen that was either higher or lower than the standard," DMS director-general Dr Niphon Phophattanachai said. About 36 per cent of samples contained a level of glutamic acid relative to nitrogen that was higher than the standard, and about 9.1 per cent of samples had a level that was lower than standard. About 4.5 per cent of samples contained a level of benzoic acid or preservative agent higher than the standard. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/638312-most-fish-sauces-in-thailand-have-unsafe-levels-of-preservatives/ I thought that was to preserve the chillis in prik naam pla.- 3 replies

Thai people should reduce their consumption of salty foods for their own good health, according to the public health deputy permanent secretary. Dr Sophon Mekthon was speaking at the launch of a campaign to enourage people to eat more healthily. The health ministry is cooperating with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand (RCPT) and the network for consuming less salt. Dr Sophon said a survey showed that Thais on average consume about 5,000 milligrammes of sodium salt a day, twice the recommended daily maximum of 2,400 mg, or about one teaspoon, per day. As a result of consuming salty foods, 21.4% or 11.5 million Thai people were suffering from high blood pressure, 17.5% or 7.6 million from kidney ailments, 1.4% or 750,000 from constricted heart arteries, and 1.1% or half a million from cerebrovascular disease. Dr Sophon said foods with a high salt or sodium content are hazardous to health. The ministry has an ongoing policy to improve people's health, he said. The objective is to reduce the incidence of five prevalent diseases: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart blood shortage, cerebrovascular disease and cancer. Dr Kriang Tangsanga, the RCPT chairman, said the college is responsible for educating the public and medical and public health staff to ensure understanding of these illnesses, and for changing people's eating behaviour to improve their health and reduce the need for expensive treatments for chronic diseases. This task is carried out, with cooperation from various health associations, under the project to campaign for reduction of sodium intake under the slogan, "Halve salt intake. Stay away from illness." Dr Surasak Kantachuvessiri, chairman of the network for consuming less salt, said a survey revealed that about 70% of people buy lunch from food shops and stalls, mostly rice with curry, a quick dish cooked to order, or noodles. The five most popular seasonings are fish sauce, soy sauce, salt, shrimp paste and oyster sauce, all with high sodium content, he said. People should avoid pickled or processed foods, cut down on consumption of noodle soup and check the sodium content on the label of processed foods before consumption, he added. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/317292/thais-consume-too-salty-foods

I have lived in several different countries and visited many more....but never have I seen so many products on the supermarket or pharmacy shelf which purport to lighten the colour of your skin. Of course in Europe and the US we try to make our skin browner by suntanning or using some creams which have a dye to create a browner skin tone. However in Europe and the US we don't have a problem with whiter skinned people being treated as inferior or considered less beautiful. The constant exposure to this kind of advertisiing is reinforcing this adverse view of brower-toned skin, while at the same time making a huge amount of money for cosmetic companies. Recently I have also seen advertisments for detox...with photos showing lighter skin following the detoxification program. And pollution is now apparently also respoonsible for this dreadful condition of browner skin. It's time for this kind of advertising and product to be banned. By doing this, I will hopefully not be subjected to the following kind of comment a Thai man directed to me when I was recently in Chiang Mai... "You like white skin girl?" That question nearly made me vomit.

Today my school issued a strong written alert to the parents of over 3000 students and gave teachers and all auxiliary staff some precautionary instructions. Thai Admin informed me to advise foreign staff this afternoon as some schools have shut down in Bangkok and Pattaya already. I found the following on the Net and people should be warned about being in crowded places such as on buses and particularly on the Sky Train which tourists use regularly. BANGKOK ? Asia prepared for even tighter swine flu controls Thursday as countries said they had received advance notice from the World Health Organization that it was planning to declare the first global flu pandemic in more than four decades. Health ministries in Thailand and Indonesia said an email alert from WHO advised them that a pandemic would be declared as early as midnight local time... The world is in phase 5 of WHO's pandemic alert scale, meaning a global outbreak is imminent. Moving to phase 6, the highest level, means a pandemic has begun. http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5ixJV_-DB8XH3ll6t1oTQ4j_N5tFw 21 cases were reported in Pattaya yesterday. Take care, everyone. Symptoms include excessive coughing, high fever and vomiting.

Then she took a bus to see a doctor. Good for her doctor checked and used some medication equipments to take it out. A reporter went to interview a woman doctor about using veggie for masterbration, he said women should be careful about the size of stuff and be careful about insecticide. Well, that was the news.... Many TFers on Sunday morning probably promised themselves they would never drink again! If you actually really stopped drinking, how much time and money would it free up and what would you do with it?

I love lifting weights. I've worked in a few different gyms. The gym I work in just now are starting a '100 kg club'. (It's not a hardcore gym. More a 'health club'.) If you can bench press 100 kg you can put your name on a notice board with how many reps you've done. If you can do more than this weight you write it down with how many reps you managed. At another gym I used to work in, in Glasgow. we used to say if you can rep 100kg for 5 reps - you are a bodybuilder. Which I thought was quite a good benchmark. Although you could probably argue that deadlifts are a more realistic indication of overall strength. Anyway, I'm wondering who on TF can benchpress 100kg or more ? If you can - then add your name here ! Who is in the TF 100kg club ??

Sex is good for your health. Most people enjoy sex for its own sake, but a recent study suggests that men who have sex at least three times a week cut their risk of a heart attack in half. Researchers started out studying the benefits of vigorous exercise, looking at an activity lasting 20 minutes or longer and making the exerciser sweaty or out of breath. Most of the men they questioned thought that sex fit this description just as well as soccer. This surprised the scientists, but they decided to study the issue. About 2,400 men in the town of Caerphilly in Wales were questioned about their habits, including how often they had sex-once, twice or three times a week or more. Then they were followed up for ten years. Those who reported the most frequent sexual activity were only half as likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack during that time. The doctors conducting the study concluded that intercourse is good exercise. Other research has shown that even walking briskly for 20 minutes at least three times a week can help ward off such cardiovascular crises, so that explanation may be adequate. But there may even be something else at work. Promiscuity isn't likely to have such health benefits. Japanese scientists recently announced that people engaging in adulterous relations were more susceptible to fatal strokes. A loving and sexually fulfilling relationship is not always easy to achieve. People are so over-committed these days that taking time out of a busy schedule to enjoy sexuality may seem like a challenge. This is especially true for people on medications that may interfere with libido or the ability to climax. Great news! sex is good for our health! so whos up for making me a fitter man? lol

Cancer update -- John Hopkins -- Cancer News from John Hopkins: 1. No plastic containers in micro. 2. No water bottles in freezer. 3. No plastic wrap in microwave. Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons. Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead. http://saranbrands.com/ This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life!

About every 2 years I get interested in yoga classes. For a number of reasons I always fail to stick with them for long. For a start there are not that many yoga classes in Bangkok and many of them are at anti-social times (say 8 or 9pm) located in anti-social places like Ekamai. So I am interested in a private yoga teacher or a small yoga class located near my house (suk 24). Ideal time about 10.00am. Anyone with any good ideas? Basically a beginner. Feel free to PM me if you dont want to post. (Male or female - Thai or Farang).
