khun_lung
In Thai, if you walk into a 7-Eleven or other shop and want to buy a prepaid phone card one asks for "ºÑµÃà µÔÃà §Ô¹" or "baht term ngun", and then by specifying Orange, DTAC or One-2-Call you'll get what you want. My question is, what do we call that card in English? Just a prepaid phone card or what? §§

khun_lung
Thanks for the replies so far. Since I'll be leaving for the States tomorrow, and since I have a tri-band mobile, does anyone know if it's possible to get a "temporary" SIM card just like visitors to Thailand can? If so which network and where could I go to buy it? Radio Shack maybe?
MikeAussieGuy
Just say pre paid card, its part of my business here and all the operators use that term, as do the outlets. Most have a sign displayed they have pre paid cards, particularly 711 stores, just point to it if you need to. As for the USA I think you will find most major airports have an outlet where you can hire phones and some sort of plan to go with it for calls, I think it's expensive though. Also I am not sure but you pay via a credit card for usage. Beware that you may have to pay a % of the cost of calls you receive from overseas as well, due to different operator networks being used from the originating country to the USA. As you have a tri band phone these same outlets may have pre paid sim cards as well. Also the following site might be of interest if you need internet connection while your there www.megapops.com. They have internet roaming facilities.

lkvang
If you are buying a card for a prepaid cellphone, its called a top up card. If buying a card to make long-distance calls, a prepaid phone card. Several different companies offer prepaid long distance phone cards with various rates per minute. DJTX
In the US you can get them at quite a few electronic stores (like Radio Shack and Best Buy). You can also get them at some 7-11's. The thing you have to be careful of in the US is GSM is not as popular (although getting more and more so). Just make sure the one you get - which will be associated with some carrier, works in your GSM phone (Sprint for example won't - they use CDMA).
