Dr_Mike
Stu, you've got it right on the nose, I've had the same experience, (except for the stewardess). If we speak Thai, they aren't interested. If they only speak Thai, we end up on the bus. (Figure of speech) Then again if she speaks English well, there's no learning Thai for us. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In response to other posts, not from Stu: As for being on TF, what are you doing here? I'm on it to talk with friends and debate, others possibly here to masturbate, and then there are those other people, men and women that come here because they are "inadequate in real life". So funny I had exactly the same thing happen to me with some wanna be high so bird a while ago. I was trying to speak some Thai with her on the BTS, and she asked me quietly not to. So I looked at her as if I hadn't heard her properly, and said, "ÃÃäÃÇÃ" (arai wah) - that pretty much sealed the end of that relationship!!!! gainesvilleman
I only read half of the responses here but decided to chip in a little bit from my experience. I have been in Thailand for a year. I self-taught myself the alphabet (reading/writing ... tone rules ... blah blah blah). It has helped a lot, but for those who are about to get into the language, my advice is to stay away from ANY sort of writing system in the first 2-3 months. You should be focusing on remembering sounds, not how they are written. I learned the alphabet so early that it almost became a crutch. Sometimes I would get lazy when learning new vocabulary and would trust my ability to read (the language is 99% phonetic) instead of mimicking (sp?) a native speaker's voice. High, low, falling, rising, mid tones. Forget these. They give you a false sense of explanation. The five tones do not follow these simple guidelines. Memorize the tones as sounds, and do it like the Thai do it. Sound 1, Sound 2, Sound 3 .... It will help a ton. There are resources on www.thai-language.com that can help with this. The tones don't follow any simple pattern. They curve like spitballs. Depending on the vowel length, *high* tone actually changes a bit. And as far as learning vowel lengths, it is the most difficult atleast in my experience part of learning Thai pronunciation. Learn what a monothong and dipthong is, and use this. Someone already said it earlier, and they were right, pronunciation is the MOST important thing about early learning in Thai language. Once you have some basic vocabulary and are familiar with Thai sounds, *THEN*, learn the alphabet. Watching TV is good and all, but I dont suscribe it to the "learn as a child" method. It, however, will help you learn how the sounds are made in different ways. Accents on the soap operas will be much different than on the news. The "learn as a child" method is more like the "if i dont learn i won't survive" method. Linguistics has proven that anyone can learn a language if their life depends on it. But in BKK, this isnt the case. You must remember also, this isnt like learnign Spanish. You can't spend 2-3 hours a week and expect to make progress. Learning Thai, if you want to become fluent, is something you MUST devote yourself to doing all day long. Scanning signs. Thinking in Thai. Constantly asking questions. If you have the motivation to do it (which normally is only found in people who do it right when they get here), then you can do it. Now, the argument on whether or not you should learn Thai, haha, I wont get into that in this post. ⪤´Õ¤Ñº

a1kabear
Do you want to learn Thai for general purposes or to meet girls?Because if you try to use it to meet girls, it's nowhere near as attractive as the simple lack of communication. And knowing Thai will make you less attractive to girls that are looking for a real boyfriend, because it will make you look like you have a bit too much experience. (Just a tip). so true, speaking thai will cut you out of a segment of the thai girls. although, depending on what someone is looking for that might be a good thing

I see it as them worried about not being able to hide something that they don't want you to know. She should be excited that you have an easy outlet for communication, not be put off by it.
