bye bye Malcolm...

Malcolm McLaren dies aged 64   Malcolm McLaren, the former manager of the Sex Pistols and impresario, has died. He was 64. McLaren had had cancer for some time. His condition recently deteriorated rapidly and he died this morning in New York. His body is expected to be brought home to be buried in Highgate cemetery, north London. Born in North London, McLaren was best known as the manager of the iconic punk band The Sex Pistols. After attending and dropping out of seve

for Haiti...

A far more credible charity single than that heap of pap that was the REM (themselves a heap of pap) cover.   Featuring Shane McGowan (The Pogues), Mick Jones (The Clash), Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Paloma Faith, Nick Cave, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) and various others.   Oh and spot the 'mystery' guitar player in the checked shirt from around 4'00.        Proof that a charity single does not have to be ****!!!

prototastic...

let's go back, right back, and one of my all time proto favourites from 1990, the wonderful 4 Hero with Mr Kirk's Nightmare...          then a jump forward to '93 and  Origin Unknown's 'Valley of the Shadows'

Inner breaks...

a nod to the early days of jungle/drum and bass/breaks wouldn't really be complete without a nod to old metalmouth himself, Goldie, and one of the all time classic d'n'b classics 'Innercity Life'       second track this evening isn't really a d'n'b track, but IS on my fave label of the time, Moving Shadow, and is in fact the first release on it. Is still one of the evillest chill out tunes in my repertoire, and has sent many a spangled party goer over the edge...

it's the weekdays, so late contributions I'm afraid... First up another great piece of early jungle from Moving Shadow; Dead Dred's Dred Bass.         Then just had to give a nod to the Ragga Twins!!

Proto

As the rave scene developed, many offshoots of the scene emerged, especially from around '91, the increasing use of more broken beats rather than the standard 4/4.Many of the proponents of this new proto jungle/jungle scene had cut their teeth in rave before moving onto the new style, often influenced by family backgrounds and being brought up amongst a culture of  Jamaican ska and reggae. This is especially true of today's first artist and an old mucker of mine, Gerald Simpson, otherwise known

Get funky!!

Follow on from Teddy, and didn't want to kick up the tempo too much after that nice dubby tune, so have chosen one of my guilty pleasures to start with; 'GetFunky' by Return of the Living Acid from 1991. Not a complex track but has the essential ingredients from back in the day; long bass notes, 303s and a nice hip hop sample (from Afrika Bambaata). More of a set starter (or a room 2 tune) than peak dancefloor filler, this is still imo, a classic.          And to follow on, a tune from

Let's go back...way back.

As Teddy has been posting some well nice contemporary drum'n'bass and breaks tunage, I thought I'd go right back to the beginning!!   Here are two classic tracks from one of the original drum and bass labels, just as it was developing from rave. Two great tunes from 2 Bad Mice on Moving Shadow Records.   Just listening to these make me want to nip out and buy some glowsticks!!!

Save BBC 6 Music!!

"The BBC Trust is about to publish a review into the performance of both 6Music and Radio 2. There are rumours that the station, which has 620,000 weekly listeners and costs £7 million a year to run, could be closed in a meaningless sacrifice to politicians demanding BBC savings and a limit on the corporation’s digital ambitions. The Trust could argue that 6’s audience reach doesn’t justify its expense and that its core audience be served in the margins of a tightened-up Radio 2."   here's the

oh shit!!!!

Britain faces big chill as ocean current slows  CLIMATE change researchers have detected the first signs of a slowdown in the Gulf Stream — the mighty ocean current that keeps Britain and Europe from freezing. They have found that one of the “engines” driving the Gulf Stream — the sinking of supercooled water in the Greenland Sea — has weakened to less than a quarter of its former strength. The weakening, apparently caused by global warming, could herald big changes in the current over the

cultural oddities...

Cultural laws  1) In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death. (Like THAT makes sense.)  2) In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror. 3) Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers; the sex

walk a mile - Iain's New Year Message

There's been an awful lot of talk about 'isms' and 'phobias' recently. People are quick to think the worst or not to think at all. They are quick to judge without understanding. Quick to condemn without knowledge. In 2010, try and think more before speaking (or posting). If you don't know about something, learn. If you don't understand, ask someone to explain. Hope you all have a wonderful, happy and smile filled 2010. To those of you changing jobs, face it with confidence. To those of you mo

2009 Mash Up

Not normally a big fan of mash ups, and not really a fan of any of the tracks on this, but you have to admire the mix; the top 25 billboard hits of the year in one track. The Black Eyed Peas - BOOM BOOM POW Lady Gaga - POKER FACE Lady Gaga Featuring Colby O'Donis - JUST DANCE The Black Eyed Peas - I GOTTA FEELING Taylor Swift - LOVE STORY Flo Rida - RIGHT ROUND Jason Mraz - I'M YOURS Be
