Notarization of documents in Thailand

Do Thais have a way to notarize documents or an equivalent of it? I'm trying to help a Thai guy do something. He has to send a notarized copy of his passport along with a document to the IRS to get a refund from the US Gov't.... The money he is getting from the USA is small, so it is hardly worth him trying to get it done at the US embassy where they charge their own citizens $55 to get something notarized. What is he to do?

We?ve used Suwat law office to notarize a passport before

http://www.suwatlaw.com/notarypublic.html

Can?t remember how much it was

I?m sure there?s some Department in the Thai Government that does it.

It was cheaper but not convenient to get to for us

I?m sure there?s a few other lawyers providing the service but not all .

Doesn?t the Embassy have a list?

Or are they keen for the business themselves

The problem is that this guy was screwed by the work/travel agency and six flags, the theme park company in USA..They did not register properly with the IRS to get him issued an ITIN (individual tax identification number).

So... when he filed his taxes, he used is employee number from SIX FLAGS which conveniently had the same number of digits as a SSN (Social Security Number) or ITIN. When he followed up on the IRS website to find out when he would get his return he found out that his number didn't match any on record.

At expense to myself, I called the IRS and was on hold for many minutes before I found out what form he had to file to get an ITIN.

This form requires a notarized copy of his passport to be included.

A big hassle to get back a few hundred dollars, but he has to do it.

Any more questions?

Beej! I for sure am gonna send him to get your stamp!

Well, as I see (my wife also has to submit a certified copy of her passport to me in order to get a legal marriage - F*uk, don't Austrian officials know English???), your guy has to go to the place where his passport has been issued. There it is said that they do it (although I find it really funny because Thai passports are in Thai and English, as I moaned before). If I know more after my wife sent me the certified copy, I will let you know!
