England's chances of football success are in jeopardy, according to the man responsible for producing the next generation of talent. 76% of the starting XIs that played on the first weekend of the first Premier League season in 1992 were English, only 37% were English on the first weekend of this season Only 10% (23 players) of the starting XIs in 1992 were from outside the UK, this season that number had increased to 56% (123) Non-English players have scored 69% of Premier League goals so far this season - they have even scored two of the three own goals Of the 118 goals scored so far, only nine have been scored by seven English strikers According to the latest Deloitte figures for disclosed transfer fees, spending by Premier League clubs rose from £333m in 2006 to £531m in 2007 Half of that went to non-English clubs Brooking is under no doubt that the growing number of foreign players in the Premier League is depriving domestic talent of first-team football and that is having a detrimental effect on England's chances of challenging at major tournamentshttp://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6975955.stmI find this article interesting English football may have to change it's name, to Foreign Football league (plus a few Englishmen)  lol lol The English will struggle to win a World Cup in Football (and cricket) while they give preferance to players from other countries!!!!!

but surely you can apply the same logic to say that more english players are playing in the top flight in foriegn leagues and therefore are playing first team football and thus depriving italians of playing in italy, etc!!

the only team which should limit it's allowance of foriegn players should be a national team!!

but it doesn't matter because international football is generally shite anyway!!

none of the english players r good enough to play in the italian league .... and 70% of the players playing at the top level in italy are .... italian ..... and guess who won the last world cup !!!

this is total bs...look at the england team of 1992 before the premier league....

carlton palmer, andy sinton, ...aaaahh...read the letters page on football365.....if english are good enough to compete they will be in 1st teams of big clubs.. also their penchant for alcoholism, criminal activity and WAG's or page 3 birds means they cannot stay at top level for long.

The world cup is only on for a few weeks every four years, and errr England have not won since 1966 even with all of those english players between 1966-1992?

I'd rather watch entertaining football for 10 months of the year for 4 years than watch England maybe do well in the world cup every 4 years.

Yes, that is true, a lot of foreign players in English premiere league but England will be better just change the manager. I like LFC in English premiere league but for nation team I cheer Italy. since Paolo rossi 1982 , Baggio 1994 and 2006 Forza Italia , siamo campioni.

Casper100 I agree with you. a lot of Good English players but England nation team is a disgrace as is the manager. Why don't ask for another manager outside England?

Whats different about this to Australian Rugby League & Union, more Kiwis playing for Australia than Aussies, only thing is they carry two passports and become an Australian to get the big bucks.

i think everyone is overlooking the fact that the current national team is the best england's had for some time, but there seems to be a HUGE lack of performance. On paper england's got what it takes to take on any nation.

I think the main problem is all of england's managers are too scared to not play all the big names....even if it means playing them well out of position. Why do we need a Gerrard ANd a Lampard? they're the same player!! Get rid of lampard...or at least leave him on the bench. Give england's wingers a chance. We have shaun wright philips who never plays, aaron lennon (england's best player in the world cup). i think then we'd inject a bit of spunk into the team. And the strikers.....well why play owen after coming back from a huuuge injury. he has had few starts for his club team in the past two years...crouch, defoe, bent, rooney.....enough said.

Let's hope mclaren sorts out his current shite form in time for the euros eh?
