Today I almost kick a farang ass. On this Sunday my sup. will has a graduation ceremony, so I walked around the office to tell the others and ask if anyone wanna be there. You know, to congrat her. I think it's good to be there na... think about it... it's not easy for someone to graduate, it's not a thing that you can do every year and that person might need people that she/he knows by her/his side. That's my thought. Then I walked to my farang friend's desk. I told him, but he quite didn't care.. but it's ok. then I just talked to my philipino friend that my sup. was so lucky, cuz the celemony would be on Sunday. For me I don't think anyone will come to my graduation celemony..... suddenly, Mr.N said... "cuz nobody love you" ......No one love you and bla bla bla.....and laugh at me. I really wanna say shut the f... up. Yeah I know he was kidding... but he didn't know I felt not good about it na... I'm kind sensitive person. It's so sad already that no one can be there cuz it would be on weekday 26-30 Jan. (don't know the date) hehe kidding... I'm not that sensitive... but I think hurting people like me by wording to make him feel better I guess.Deep down inside, I know somebody love me. It must be someone...Only dad n' mom I think. cuz I'm so "Kraeng chai" my relatives. Think about people have to get the day off and stay in the hot sun, wait for me outside the hall. ewwww

Sounds like a farang that doesn't have much experience working with Thais - then again, he could have lived here for 20 years and still be ignorant.

But we can't say anything to help him, so instead 2 pieces of advice for you! :)

1) Don't take it to heart. He was probably joking and didn't realise he was being insensitive, if so you can just try the long, silent stare - that could choke out an apology! :) He might have been being intentionally cheeky in a playful way, in which case you can either accept his sense of humour and take the piss back out of him (which is very possibly what he was looking for) by saying "Maybe not many people love me, but only your mother could love a face like that!!", or just avoid speaking to him on non-work related matters.

2) Farang (although this is such an incredibly useless term considering the massive cultural differences between Europeans, let alone all the other "white" countries) expect people to speak their thoughts, not hide their opinions from fear of confrontation. Obviously this doesn't always gel well with Thai culture, but it is worth remembering. If someone is speaking their mind or being confrontational to you, remaining silent and feeling angry inside is not going to give any indication to the farang and is not going to change his future behaviour - in fact it might encourage him to continue that way. Telling him what you think and why will gain respect even if he disagrees. You could have said "Well, personally I think that's unnecessary and rude of you to say that" - I realise that it's really not easy for many Thais to do this for cultural reasons, but interaction between cultures goes both ways: when you are speaking in English, you have to take on some of the forms of the culture, just the same as when I speak Thai, I try to speak more quietly and phrase

Some of my post got lost! :(

to continue....

to speak more quietly and phrase my sentences more respectfully. Being assertive goes a long way with bullies and may discourage him from making other remarks to you like that.

Don't take it too much to heart though because he almost certainly didn't mean what he said. If he really thought that, it would have been the last thing he said! ;)

I hope this is just a one off because I have seen some really terrible situations between Thais and Farang which have ended with the company practically coming to a standstill and with people quitting their jobs.

Hope some of this helps. Good luck! :)

Neung, you should only get upset when someone is REALLY trying to insult you... and you will definitely know when that happens. You know it's not true. It's this guy's bad joke. Just treat it like a bad joke and don't laugh.

(then pee in his coffee cup)

Thks everyone ja... sorry for the slow reply to your comments.

I was so busy this afternoon.

Nong Oiy, I think I should let my mom and dad go home when I'm in the hall... they are old now.. I don't think I should let them in the hot sun outside.

Khun Funky_house, people hurt each others by wording but they never know... I did that so many times :P

Khun Spearthrower, that's so good comment... I will take not... I will use it next time. My English isn't good enough to reply his comments, you know...

P'Dave ja... how can I pee in someone coffee cup? hmmm I'm a woman, it's hard to do...

p'Tu I won't pee in his coffee cup for sure.. I don't have hmmm that thing. Guys' stuff, well you know.

p'Iain.... he can't spoil my day, but you know p'Iain, what goes around comes around.. some destroy his day already... hehehe.. Som Nam Na

This guy isn't worth your attention any more. Probably he had a bad day and just looked for someone to kick, but from my point of view a behaviour like that disqualifies every guy. Try to not let it get under your skin ! You deserve the best ppl of all around you cause you yourself truly belong to the best this world has to offer !
