i was watching a Louis Theroux documentary earlier about western men who 'idolise thai women' and it featured a dating/marriage agency in bangkok run by an old english guy who had been married 4 times and divorced twice.  Whilst the irony of this did not escape me it is not the purpose of this journal.Anyhow a client (english male in his late 50's) had been dating a woman for 2 hours before he proposed to her.  She said yes and they were married 3 hours later.  The woman was in her mid-late forties.Wow...was the reaction of both Louis Theroux and me.  Now it's not for me to judge others (but im going to anyway) but how could either of these two individuals believed this was a good idea.  The facts:1) He was upfront about not being rich and she stated that it was not about financial security as she had her own house and car.2) He is on substantial medication and suffers from aggressive mood things.  Two things she was made aware of prior to the date.3) Her visa application to the UK had still not been approved as at the end of the filming.  The chance of a successful application as a result of a shotgun wedding are slim anyway.4) They could not possibly know that they love eachother within two hours of meeting.5) He could have done just as well for himself in the UK (dating agency or otherwise) as she was not paticularly attractive and at her age could not be considered a trophy wife if that was his motive.  She could probably have done a lot better than him too.6) I'm off to bangkok to start up a marriage agency if it's this easy to get people together.Does this happen often??  I mean i'm aware that farang/thai partnerships are big business for these agencies and each to their own but come on 5 hours!?!?!

in these situations we can see just how sad and pathetic both sides can be. And it does happen more often than we would care to see (hence the business side of it). But, then again, who should deny them even a few hours of their joy and excitement, or judge their lifes unique journey? Better to just focus on our own journeys i believe.

When my company first started sending me to Thailand I decided to take language lessons at the local temple here. There was an elderly man in the class who was taking the lessons so he could communicate with a 25 yr old "penpal" from upcountry he had met thru some sort of agency. She could not speak or write english and he could not speak or write Thai. All communication was done thru the translation the teacher provided! Absolutely mindboggling! Not to mention that the little thai he was learning was horrid! He had no sense of tone and the teacher (who is more accustomed to hearing butchered thai) could never understand a word he said.... it is truely mind boggling what some guys will do!!

tonia, have u just watched the film 'what stays in vegas' by any chance? ;p most weddings in vegas are between couples that have known or been together for some time. Sure a lot are spur of the moment and u may get the odd couple who met eachother the same night and marry while drunk....but this is completely different imo

I have seen that video before. It was really weird and interesting story. :P

That bridegroom...Gosh! Could he be any more pathetic?

I don't understand Why that woman was willing to marry him. (flabbergasted!)

Re:6) It is basically supply and demand. you can try it if you want. ;)

A friend of mine who does documentaries worked on a film about a filipina working in the UK that married a guy from the Philippines. They IM'd each other for an extended period but did not meet until the week of the wedding. Then after the wedding she went back to the UK to work and he stayed in the PI living off of the money she sent back!! Not a bad job if you can find it!! =)
