Well it is fair to say that the army has completely f**ked up this afternoons operation.

If it isn't bad enough to use troops against civilians, it is worse to have them use force and discharge weapons, gain an advantage and then meekly withdraw when they have the upper hand.

Based on live TV reports and vision, there are now huge number of reds at Phan Fa and Ratchadamnoen Nok Ave having swarmed into the area in the last couple of hours. There are a couple of other locations in the area where there are stand offs between troops and reds.

The army has retreated back up Ratchdamnoen Nok having used a combo of tear gas, blanks and rubber bullets. Images which will be shown around the world. People will see soldiers firing on protestors which will only invoke ignorant sympathy elsewhere and a little more support for the reds by some in Thailand. The govt is now on the defensive with Panitan already appearing on TV in the last 30 mins stating that only necessary force was used. Thai TV is already reporting on the number of reds injured at the hospital.

Phan Fa is reenergised and the reds have a 'victory' just when their numbers were decreasing. Now, if the army still wants to reatke Phan Fa they have to deal with a crowd at least 10 times as large and growing fast.

What a complete waste of energy!

lol - thanks Tonia.

And I loved this comment...

Pretty pictures. I think you need to be made aware of how this is being view from here by most long term expats best explained as below. Quoted in full without any changes from the Thaivisa.com forum for expats. (For those unaware Madoff equals Taksin the former ousted and now convicted PM).

"Let me break it down for the Americans out there. The Red shirts are like hillbillies from the Ozarks and Appalachians. Poor, not well educated and a bit marginalized by the rest of the country. They idolize a corrupt billionaire named Bernie Madoff, they thinks he's the cat's ass. Bernie is in jail for his misdeeds but sees these rubes as his ticket to freedom and the restoration of his ill gotten fortune. He tries to enlist the help of a million of these fine folks, but through bribery and angry rhetoric he only manages to get 50,000 to participate in his scheme. He has them march on Washington, he even puts gas in their pickups so they can make the journey. They occupy the streets of the nation's capitol. They piss on the sidewalks and make a nuisance of themselves. They loiter and block intersections and hang out at the Lincoln memorial. They hope by doing this that Obama will not only pardon Bernie, but that he'll declare him the new President. Sounds insane doesn't it? What about the other 300 million or so citizens? Shouldn't they get a say? No, all that matters is that Bernie Madoff gets rich and powerful once more. And when he does his protesters can go back to moonshining and marrying their cousins.

And that in a nutshell is what it is like to live in Thailand these days."

At 5:58 pm, Thai PBS reported that a helicopter dropped teargas canisters onto protesters.

But the protesters retaliated by releasing balloons at the helicopter.

WTF!!!

The Somalis did the same thing in Blackhawk Down. Wait, that's not right. Oh, they used RPG's to bring down the helicopters. If only they had known that the mortal enemy of a multi-million dollar helicopter is a balloon.

As soon as you all start wearing the same colour you're f**ked.

If this other movement wear all the same colour it'll ruin their image before they even start.

They are normal people, dress as normal people, and march as normal people.

They deleted my comment on their facebook page, no idea why, are they all planning on wearing the same colour?

THE NATION: Urgent: Nuttawut says one red shot dead by troops. Arisman says "War has come".

Lies and flying intestines?

THE NATION: The Nation's reporter reported from Vachara hospital that a protesters were shot and his intestine flown out.

THE NATION: At Kokwua Intersection, protesters used lie ammunitions and M26 grenades while troops battled them with rubber bullets

Seems something serious happened ay Kokwua intersection with reports on PBS that some sort of explosive device was thrown and live ammo used by the red shirts resulting in 20 soldiers being injured.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/174320/clash-near-democracy-monument

It was reported that at Kok Wua Intersection near Democracy Monument, there was a clash between the demonstrators and soldiers. Grenades were thrown into the soldiers, injuring several and the soldiers replied with bullets at the mob, especially at the legs, not aiming at the sky.

Both soldiers and demonstrators have been sent to the hospitals for treatment.

There were sporadic gun fires and bombs but reporters were not sure who did what as the sound came from all sides and the reporters were cordoned off the area to a safer place nearby.

In another development, Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that security personnel would take a temporary respite to calm the situation and prevent violence to escalate further.
