Ianin
Help :!: I have just made a promise that I don?t know how to fulfil. A girl I know is upset because she is never taken anywhere really nice on her birthday, so I opened my big mouth and promised I would take her to the most romantic Thai Restaurant in Thailand. Now my problem is that I have no idea where to go. Some ideas please, especially from the girl members. It doesn?t necessarily have to be in Bangkok as it would make it more interesting if it was somewhere else, but the town should at least have an airport or be within driving distance. Thanks for your ideas
VanillaVodka
Awww that is very sweet of you. In Bangkok, Mahanaga/Sukhumvit soi 29 is very nice. It's Thai fusion food though but very nice. Supatra By The Sea or Let's sea in Hua Hin is also nice. Or go dinner cruise with Manorah at the Marriott Charoennakorn. If it doesn't have to be Thai then Vertigo at the Banyan Tree. Great view. babyoiy
its about the ppl you are with not the place, what about you cook her dinner?
khun_lung
I kinda like the Baiyoke Tower sky restaurant. The view of bkk is magnificent and the international buffet is quite good and it's even affordable at something like 380 baht/person. Make sure, however, that you phone in advance and reserve a window table! After dinner drinks at the Sky Lounge with live entertainment is also nice! Cosmo
For the city view, I agree with Klun Lung, Baiyoke Sky 2 is just breathtaking. For the River view, the Bangkok Marriot by the Riverside is absolutely spectacular!
Dr_Sassy
I'm not quiet sure what other girls might think..but my conception of a romantic place is anyplace where I can sit down and enjoy the meal with my loved one. Candles are needed. You knows.. I went to a so-called restaurant with my boy.. nothing fancy at all but the moment and everything was just so perfect. Comparing to "Vertigo" or "Madison".... if the person you are with is boring, dining out would not be enjoyable. L'Opera is quite okay.. find some quiet spot so you could talk to the lady or a resturant on the top of some high building. Buy her some roses and one card would be a good start

khun_lung
For whatever it's worth, there *are* candles on the tables at Baiyoke and the lighting is low. For an extra kick, go there during a rip-roaring thunderstorm (I have)! Best time to go there is around 6pm so that you'll have time to watch the sunset if it's not cloudy or too smoggy. Then watch the lights of Bangkok come alive! Wanna go check it out with me Sassy? lol
Niranahm
Sorry, maybe it's just my taste but I find the Baiyoke buffet terribly bland. And, er, you think a buffet is the right meal for a romantic date??? For wonderful OPEN AIR sky views in a romantic setting, try either Vertigo or Sirocco. Vertigo has the better food, Sirocco has the better setting (marginally, but significantly). Sirocco: http://www.thedomebkk.com/web/sirc_home.html Vertigo: www.banyantree.com/bangkok/dining_vertigo.htm Google tells you a lot more... Unfortunately both these places are rather expensive -- figure 2,000-3,000 a head. Cuisine is international/Mediterrean which might not suit a Thai date Something more normally priced while beng romantic and on the river: Baan Klang Nam. www.wheretoeat-Bangkok.com/restaurant_reviews/baan_klang_nam.htm Food is Thai/seafood but they do have a wine cellar. 500-1000 THB a head. It's rather hard to find so make sure you have a map. There is a new Baan Klang Naam 2 further down on Rama III which is a newer building - it;s less romantic though because it's not right on the water. Some new and interesting: Kupu Kupu Barong on Ratachada http://matrix.bangkokpost.co.th/entertainment/restaurants/review.php?id=273 is a review -- I can't find a website if they have one Food is Thai, Indonesian and Thai-Indonesian fusion. It's really good food in a open garden setting with plenty of water and trees. Figure 500 THB a head. Little hidden gem, a short stroll from Patpong?! Indigo on soi covent. http://www.wcities.com/en/record/,180973/185/record.html It's a few steps down a sub soi off Soi convent opposite the Irish Xchange. Food is French and the prices are low for this quality of French food: Figure 1500 a head. Sometimes the quality is a little hit and miss but it's got a romantic al fresco setting in the middle of chaos.

breakofdawning
For real Thai food, I really like Bussaracum on Sathorn Road. The food is real Thai Royal cuisine and the place is real quiet. When I was there with my boyfriend there were only 3 tables. It felt like there were only two of us there. Nice, spacious place and the food tastes very good, in my opinion. Ianin
Many thanks for the ideas. Whilst I like Vertigo and Sirocco, it has to be a Thai restaurant. Also I am not going to cook at home as there is a chance that things may get out of hand!!! So as I haven?t been to Bussaracum for many years, that?s the top contender so far. Niranahm
Oh yeah Bussaracum is excellent -- and the prices forThai food makes it spacious too! On the same road further down is Blue Elephant (beside the Surasak Skytrain stop), which is also a fabulous Thai restaurant (and similarly priced). A recent overseas visitor of mine claimed the food there was the most delicious Thai food she had ever eaten. http://www.blueelephant.com/ (BTW on a separate note, the fixed menu business lunch there for around 350 THB is a bargain) Blue Elephant also has a famous cooking school. Strangely its first branch was overseas and it only came to Bangkok about two years ago.
VanillaVodka
Baiyoke is a no-no-no-no. Have never been to Bussaracum but I didn't enjoy the food at Blue Elephant at all. Too mild and cooked to suit, no offense, the farangs tastebuds. But nice setting. I still would recommend this place. http://www.mahanaga.com/bangkok/index.html
anenglishman
i do agree with VV about the Blue Elephant....farang focused. Nothing wrong in that just not to Thai tastes, nor to mine. Most romantic place to eat Thai food is my kitchen......available for rent at a very reasonable charge, with the thai food thrown in for free. Ammy
Baan Klang Nam on Rama 3 the food is great, the atmosphere is excellent. book yourself a table by the river, get the rama 9 bridge and Kasikorn bank building (and my house )'s view at night. i have been there quite often. the service is pretty great, mostly local and some farang business people come over for dinner business. nothing too fancy there but totally lovely. or a thai traditional dinner on the river cruise of Marriott Spa and Resort hotel is also lovely and then head for a few drinks in 360 degree in Hilton or Jester's in Peninsula would rock the night!!! just anything to do with the river at night. it will be special... thaibel
February this year I went to a restaurant outside Chiand Mai. It was a 1 hour drive and was near a (artificial) lake. A friend was there before and we went with them to the restaurant. We were the only farangs there between maybe more than 150 people. The atmosphere was good, the scenery splendid ... water with a beach where childeren were playing, mountains in the background. It was great. The food was not adpated at the taste of farangs, but we spend all afternoon there eating and drinking and having a good time. the bill was only 650 TB for the four of us, drinks included  . And it was romantic even between all this ppl . Some pics:
badrex
Awww that is very sweet of you. In Bangkok, Mahanaga/Sukhumvit soi 29 is very nice. It's Thai fusion food though but very nice. Well I am also in similar situation I am planning to propose a girl who been my best friend from past six year. We like each other but till now none of us tried to open our mouth because we do respect our friendship very much . I guess now its time to try my luck because I don?t want to cry rest of my life. I am visiting Bangkok just for 2 days to attend meeting with our local engineers so the Mahanaga/Sukhumvit is very perfect for me. Do they have dress code? Mikee_Moose
For the city view, I agree with Klun Lung, Baiyoke Sky 2 is just breathtaking. For the River view, the Bangkok Marriot by the Riverside is absolutely spectacular! I have heard from more than a few people that despite the view, the food at Baiyoke is HORRIBAN as is the area in general. There is a wonderfull place on the Thonburi side of the river where the food and atmosphere is fantastic. I know how to get there but dont remember the soi name. It is relatively close to Pinklao road just down from a riverside Wat. Your girlfriend might know the area because it is close to a set of restaurants that put on Thai dancing and pupet shows (not for tourists). Its is not a tourist joint and as I said the food is excellent and the views of the palace and all the river activity are great. You cannot book a table and it does get busy. Unfortunately, most of the best Thai food in town is not in very romantic settings. Another great one is on Rama III on the river caled Bann Glangnam (not the best spelling but most cab drivers know where it is). Its not too far from the SV City Condo Complex (about 3 km down the road towards the Rama IX bridge). The food is excellent (packed every night) and the overall presentation is ok. Across the courtyard is a more trendy looking place but I have never tried the food there. It too is quite busy (which is a telltale sign of food quality). I wish I could be more specific. I know how to get to these places but dont know the actual soi and street names. If you need a limo driver for the night, gimme a shout. Trower
Some of the outdoor resteraunts in my opinion are the most romantic... but the weather needs to be right... where the sun happens to be... etc. If you go to the Cambodian border via Trat... well... about a mile before you get there... maybe two... there is a bustling little seaside village on the right. Just off the main road (you are traversing), overlooking this village are a string of Thai fish resteraunts. It might just have been the time of day... but wow. The open balcony-type style of this venue along with its rustic plant use, all worked to great effect. They do both very spicy (eye watering), and mild foods... I love Chilli, and curry powder... (Rugby style)... so you can guess which way I went. I can only judge it against farang following Baan Kanita and a few of the good hotels here in terms of food quality (dysentary probabilities, health and safety)... but it more than stands up with them... i just wish I could remember the bloody name of the place. Definitely the kind of place you can either take or pick up a mistress... aswell as a nice family... (try not to pick up a family). I just thought it would be a nice stop on my way to temple, just before I started my charity work at the mission for buddhist world peace and the prevention of cruelty to animals... LOL. Boys take your girls... and enjoy. The beaches are also practically deserted there, and the white sand is amazing.
