most of the poster here dont get it.. they seem to think that all gun owners have some sort of charles bronson mental problem and are completely tigger happy folks who go out on sunday drives to randomly off innocent or not so inocent people just to see what type of score we can tally up.

almost all of my coworkers owns guns, most of my neighbors, all of my family members and the good majority of my friends. now out of all the people i have yet to know of one that has shot or killed anyone. nor has their kids.

what is so hard to understand that you can own a gun and not have to kill with it. people own cars everyday and do kill with them.has any one seen how much damage a fork can do to a person. i have seen this never thought you could kill some one with a fork. much less a lot of other makeshift weapons i have seen used to kill with.

forgot who said it but i believe this thread does have some sort of virulent std since most of the posters are not even americans and have absoutlely no say in my goverment, thank god for that. nor does it seem the even understand the history or basic rights granted by the founders of this country. although i think most americans seem to have forgotten this also..

so am leaving for the clinic and getting my super mega doses of penicillian std killer and wont return for fear of being reinfected by what ever is growning in here

gas chambers and hilter and i should know this ....aaaahh i work for one of the companys that built them,,,,duh,...not something am sure they are proud of.

speaking for myself only, and speaking specifically and only about handguns and assault rifles, or military-style weapons, what is hard to understand is why one feels a need to own one in the first place. i'm not talking about hobbyists here. in my experience as an american very few of the handgun owners i know are collectors, they all claimed to need them for 'protection.' just as the gun owners you know have never killed anyone, i know very few gun owners who have ever been crime victims, let alone victims of home invasion type crimes that the gun is intended to protect against. and many live in gated communities with security guards, go figure...

although i think it is fair to say that those damned foreigners are allowed an opinion, even if it's wrong, and some (charisma man for example) know a lot more about the US constitution and its history than many (arguably most) americans.

while this thread is um... a loaded topic, the careful observer will note that many people approach any forum topic by deciding what they believe, THEN looking for evidence to support it (even this seems to be optional, so i give up hope that people will look at evidence BEFORE forming opinions) and making shrill post after shrill post without much attempt to support their claims. that is just how internet forums work, and why it should be hard for any forum user who didn't arbitrarily stop taking his or her meds to get genuinely worked up about such 'debates.'

Unfortunately mate, and I would not expect you to disagree, once your country decides to mess with other countries, then other countires become part of the equation. i'm sorry mate, but as long as your country has influence in my life, then my opinion counts.

No, it does not. As zeus said, you are free to have an opinion and express it. But as the right to own a gun in the United States is a matter to be decided by citizens of the United States, your opinion "counts" for absolutely nothing. Zero.

Talk about an arrogant "imperialist" attitude.

Please note that YOUR country messes with other countries too. Does that give me the right to participate in deciding what laws your country will or will not have? Absolutely not.

Nor does your opinion "count" for anything in my country.

nope i don't think that all gun owners in the US are triger happy psychos who go about on sunday shoot ups, i just feel the freely available nature of guns in the US makes this easier to acheive !!

what i find hard to understand is why so many ppl feel the need to own guns and own so many god damm many of the things. i can (just about) understand the need for a weapon to protect urself, ur family and ur property (although dubious about how safer it actually makes U) however the sheer volume and type of weapon available in the US is IMO f**king scary !!!

comparing using a fork to a gun as a means of killing someone is disingenious ... a fork (for me personally) is a means of conveying food to my mouth (or else all over the table) and it is designed as such .... a firearm is designed with the sole purpose of killing or injuring someone or something. not quite the same thing in my eyes.

btw ... as regads ur rights under the US constitution to bear arms, my understanding is that this was written/ratified approximately 230 years ago and circumstances in the US have changed just a little since then. again my understanding is that ur forefathers recognised that this might happen and provisions have been made to enable the constitution to be amended ... in fact i do believe the constitution has been amended as recently as 1992 !!!!

glad u finally made the connection with the gas chambers comment !!!

ehhhhhhhhh ................ nope !!!

bush, cheney and .....(i was about to say here the rest of the neo cons, but there's none left they've all f**ked off faster than rats off a sinking ship) don't give a f**k about the opinion of ppl in the US (unless they agree with the neo con ideology) why do ur think ur opinion is gonna have any effect on them !!!

i mean if u could even get ur opinion to count for something on TF that might be a start .... might be i did say !!!!

I think it gives people a rush and feeling of power. we be bad with big gun and most powerful. I can see maybe some live in a neighborhood where ya might even need one but I know animal rights peace protestor with guns and conservatives in peaceful neighborhoods just itchin for a reason to defend themselfs. A bit of giving into the paranoia for the adrenaline rush of holding the all powerful weapon. And if for no other reason because ya can

i have a good idea how it feels. one of my class mates in my sophmore year killed his parents with their own gun one morning before he came to school.then he turned himself into his teacher.

almost all of my coworkers owns guns, most of my neighbors, all of my family members and the good majority of my friends. now out of all the people i have yet to know of one that has shot or killed anyone. nor has their kids.

And of course your lying will convince a lot of people that you are so bloody right. Did you also lye when you got your license to hold weapons??? :x

interesting catch. not necessarily a lie... might be multiple personality disorder, parallel universes, etc..

Wake up and READ Piant, you are an English teacher, aren't you?

As I wrote, you are free, as we all are, to express your opinions.

But your opinions count for nothing when it comes to deciding on the laws and basic rights of citizens of another country.

There are only two ways for your opinions to "count." Either in an election, and you do not have the right to vote in someone else's country, so that's out and your opinion does not "count."

Or by arguing so effectively that you can sway the opinions of people who DO have a vote.

I'm on the same side of this issue as you are. I oppose unlimited and unrestricted gun ownership.

But when you hector us about what our "basic rights" are or are not, and insisting your opinion "counts" because my country "messes" with other countries, you've completely lost me. As I said, our basic rights are defined and decided by our citizens. Not YOU. And your country "messes" with others too. The fact that your country does, doesn't give me any say in deciding what your laws and rights are within your own country.

I don't give a damn what your opinion is on this issue, simply because of the way you express it.

Blather away. In my country, your opinion counts for NOTHING.

so from all the posters:

1. who owns a gun?

no
2. who hunts at least several times per year?
no
3. who has used a gun?
yes
4. who target shoots?
sporadically
5. who has served in the military?
no
6. who has been threatened by a gun?
yes
7. who has used a gun in cival defense?
no
The time I used a gun in defense was during a break in during the middle of the night. I was living out in the forest, a remote location and no police woud have been there to help.

would be interested in hearing more details of this incident.

Apparently, NEITHER does yours.

Why are you under the impression that I'm trying to subvert your government's policies by arguing a point of view here (where my opinion counts just as much as yours)?

You lot are freakin paranoid.

here on tf it's a safe bet that nobody's opinion counts for much of anything.

Every killed anyone? *think Dirty Harry voice.

actually, i did. but not with a gun, with my apartment keys. it was an accident. no jury would convict me.

this survey thing is an interesting idea; gives an idea of what the (rather shrill) participants' actual life experience is as related to the topic.

An apartment key... wowzer...!!! Was the key hole a knife sharpener or was it really the butler with the candle stick? Details...

simple. i gave the crazy, paranoid old downstairs neighbor a heart attack by coming home drunk, thinking i was at the correct apartment, and trying to open her door with my key.. i made several attempts, cursing under my breath when it didn't work, before i figured out that i had to go up one more step.

(oh, and my rather "shrill" past...as in high-pitched?)

what happens in vegas, stays in vegas, baby...
