StevieJR
Who would you say are the greatest sportsmen ever to grace the planet? Here are a few of mine but i cant decide who is......'The greatest' Boxing - Muhammad Ali So many world class boxers around in his era and he beat them all. Never will be anyone else like him. Football - Maradonna His 2nd goal angainst England in the 86 world cup was the greatest goal ive ever seen. Also won the golden ball award (Best player) probably the most complete player of all time. Formula one - Michael Schumacher Seven times world champion. His win at all costs attitude didnt make him the most popular but it gave him results!! And the stats prove he is the greatest driver the world has ever seen. here are some others Golf - Jack Nicklaus Rowing - Sir Steven Redgrave (Won Gold Medals at five consecutive Olympic Games) Daley thompson (won two gold medals and everything else there was to win in the Decathlon. One of the greatest all round athletes the world has ever seen)

Allow me to complete the list - of course in MY point of view Basketball: Michael AIR Jordan Tennis: Pete Sampras and of course my Swiss man Roger Federer (even he is not retired yet, he is already a legend) Football: There were so many great players, besides Marodonna, do not forget Pele, Beckenbauer, Zizou or Roberto Baggio. F1: Ayrton Senna (R.I.P)

Loburt
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice as a pair for American Football If you name Gretzky for hockey, he has to be paired with Mark Messier. Gretzky never won a Stanley Cup without him. But Messier won two without Gretzky.
Loburt
Michael Jordan never played American Football. He failed at baseball, couldn't hit a lick. And has lost more money at golf than you or I will make in a lifetime.

Loburt
He never played professional football and he didn't quarterback his college team. So his arm can't be compared to a pro quarterback. There are guys who have great arms, but they aren't good enough at football to quarterback. Just as there are guys who can throw a baseball 90+ mph, but aren't good enough pitchers to pitch in the major leagues. So they don't qualify as great athletes. I have a friend who plays off a four in golf and he's not a professional athlete. It's not the biggest deal in the world. Michael Jordan was great at basketball, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. But that doesn't make him the greatest sportsman of all time. My guess is if Michael Jorden stuck to baseball after high school, he would a have been a great baseball player. Going back his eye could not adjust to the different speeds and spins. Whatever sport he channeled his engery to at a young age and stuck with it, he would have been a great.
Dave40
What about Wilt Chamberlain surely he would be an all time great 100 point game and over 3000 women off the court (I think it may of been more) I am surprised he found time to play (some guys have all the luck)

You are probably right about that. But there is no way to really know. Some guys can just never learn to hit a major league curveball no matter how many years they practice, and despite being able to crush a 90 mph fastball 450 feet. But if I had to bet on it, I'd bet he could. But it's not a certainty. By the way, I'd have to agree with Keith Hernandez, a former MVP. Batters can't really see "spin" on a pitch coming at them at those speeds. What they are seeing is trajectory.
Loburt
But that doesn't make him the greatest sportsman of all time. Topic, World's greatest sportsmen, I'd put Michael Jordan up as one, I clearly didn't promote him as the greatest sportsman of all time. No, you didn't. And he clearly is one of the greatest sportsmen. But not for some of the reasons you named. His throwing arm, baseball abilities and golf acumen don't qualify him. He's one of the world's greatest sportsmen for basketball ability, and nothing else.

MikeAussieGuy
I think Michael Schumacher and Tiger Woods are stand outs, certainly in the last 10 years, and I cant think of either one of them having bad press. Perhaps Schumey for an occasional unsportsman like behaviour tag, but compared to his achievements nothing at all. Tiger is outstanding.
Loburt
Tiger got bad press here in Thailand when he visited. Jim Thorpe, definite yes. Jesse Owens, possibly. Bo Jackson didn't compete long enough, IMHO. Don't forget Sugar Ray Robinson. And don't forget Babe Ruth.
