zeusbheld
Laibach, a Slovenian band devoted to using the methods and trappings of fascist propaganda to further their artistic careers, covered the Beatles' "Let It Be" album in 1988. i can say with some confidence that there has never been an album like this, before or since. Mazzy
Stairways to Heaven the album. This is one of the most hilarious cover album I've ever heard. Basically it contains 22 versions of the same song (Stairway to Heaven) as it would have been played if it had been written by some other famous artists. E.g. The Doors, Elvis, B-52's (totally crazy), The Beatles X2, etc. It's really quite amazing and has to be listened to, to be believed

Mackerel
Many think 'Tainted Love' from the band 'Soft Cell' is the original... It has been covered more times, like for instance the version of 'Marilyn Manson'. The original however is by 'Gloria Jones'! And I like the original the most...! 'Ready or not here I come' from the 'Fugees' was originally by 'the Delfonics'. 'Papa was a rollin' stone' by 'the Temptations' was originally by 'Undisputed Truth' 'Harlem Shuffle' by 'the Rolling Stones' was originally by "Bob and Earl'. The intro of the Harlem shuffle was used later as an intro for 'Jump around' by 'the House of Pain'.

But I'm glad you mentioned it because Spirit is actually a pretty good psychedelic band that I didn't know about. That Randy California sure was an interesting fellow... zeusbheld
on the subject of led zeppelin and other people's music... they covered songs from bluesman Willie Dixon without giving credit where due, including "whole lotta love" and "bring it on home." Dixon sued, and won.
PeeMarc
and I always considered Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale" to be ripped off from Bach's "Air on G String" . At least the chord runs and part of melody.

At least the chord runs and part of melody. it is. but the great thing about ripping off Bach, is that the copyright has been expired for centuries. unlike, oh i dunno, Willie Dixon, who expired himself in the early 1990s. At least the chord runs and part of melody. Matthew Brooker from Procol Harem acknowledged Bach's influence in Whiter Shade of Pale in a TV interview a few years ago...but speaking of Bach.... Didnt like Sky's cover of "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor", that Sky released in the early 80's....but.. I do like the treatment Tull give to JS Bachs "Bouree" .. If, however, you want to experience one of the more painful "covers" act, I suggest you Google Margarita Pracatarn, who was shot to stardom by appearing as a regular on the Clive James Show...
