Obama and the Press

Racist? Give me a break.

It was meant as satire, and is pretty much in line with how the New Yorker's cartoonist have done satire over the years.

It's a play on people's "secret" and not-so-secret fears and ignorance.

My fear is that the rabid hypersensitivity of the people surrounding Senator Obama will make an Obama administration a nightmare of political correctness which they will use to tar anyone who honestly has different views as "racist.''

Being sensitive to people and not being abusive or discriminatory on matters of race, ethnicity, etc. is one thing.

Foaming-at-the-mouth, witch trial-like accusations of "racism" are another.

And there has been a bit too much of that so far.

In 2000, when Rudy Giuliani was running against Hillary Clinton for Senator from New York, The New Yorker had a cover cartoon with Clinton walking through Central Park and Giuliani depicted as a mugger with a blackjack waiting to pounce on her and beat her to a pulp.

I guess The New Yorker was "racist" for depicting an Italian-American as a criminal?

You're really off the deep end here.

Let's see. Who else has been branded a "racist" by the Obama campaign?

Bill Clinton.

Right............

No foaming at the mouth witch trials going on here. Nooooo....

Racist? Give me a break.

has any white presidential candidate being shown dressed in muslim dress with the stars and stripes buring in the fireplace ???

has any white presidential candidate's wife being shown dressed as a terrorist ??

enough said !!!

Do you really think the people who buy and read the New Yorker don't know that Obama is not a Muslim, but that that the extreme right wing is trying to spread beliefs that he is? Along with being unpatriotic?

This isn't a right-wing publication that is read by truckers in Alabama. This is making fun of what some of those people believe, and what the extreme right wing elements of the media are trying to make people believe.

The people who read the New Yorker are educated enough to know that.

If they think it's in bad taste, that's one thing.

But to say The New Yorker is racist is absurd.

This cartoon satirizes what's already out there in the political debate and popular culture. Anyone with a bit of intelligence can see that.

When we can't satirize our leaders then we are living in a fascist state.

Bill Clinton was criticized for making what was perceived as a racist commnet (whether that was fair or not is debateable) i don't think he was denounced as being a racist !!

and after Kerry allowing himself to be used as a football in the last election i think Obama's team is right to hit back any time they r being misrepresented !!

Yes, Bill Clinton was denounced as a racist by Obama supporters. I remember one black columnist calling him "racist" and "disgusting."

The comment Clinton made also was not racist.

John Kerry's spinelessness is not an excuse for unfairly tarring people and publications that are obviously not racist as being so.

That's not a valid excuse for what some of Obama's staff and supporters have done.

And they are NOT tarring members of the right-wing character assassination squads. They are tarring people who have supported civil rights and been on correct side of these issues, and lumping them in the same boat as those right-wing hit squads.

The whole thing reminds of the McCarthy era when people were branded as "communists.''

This is the new McCarthyism.

do u really think that it's only gonna be ppl who read the New Yorker that will see this cartoon ? do u not think that truckers in Alabama will also see this cartoon ? do u not think that a cartoon like this is manna from heaven to the extreme right wing ? do u not think fox news r gonna love this cartoon ?

r there not many ppl in america (not all of them who r extreme right wingers) who do believe that obama is (or was) a muslim ?

r there not many ppl who believe he is unpatriotic .... thanks to fox news and their mates ?

i didn't say the New Yorker was racist, but to me this cartoon had racist overtones !! and as i said previously

ah yeah .... poor Bill Clinton .... i mean that poor guy was so new to politics he didn't see it coming !!

his wife was in a fight with obama for the nomination u can be damm sure if he had the same opportunity to go after obama he'd have been all over him like a rash !! the clinton campaign fought just as low and dirty as obama .... maybe even more so !!

u might think ppl and publications r not racist, but that doesn't mean things they say or publish can not be racist !! IMO obama is dead right to criticize this cartoon although i don't believe he has personally described it as racist !!

the new McCarthyism .... u r having a f**king laugh !!

I do think its going to have a negative negative impact on his campaign, those who see it as just a front cover and funny will be already converted, no point preaching to the converted!

Those who hate him anyway will hate him more, and those that are undecided, well I see them going to way of McCain, you know how paranoid those bloody Yanks are about terror!

Its like back firing anti fear trade!

oh, so in other words it's not acceptable for the Clintons to play rough, and you condemn them.

but if Obama and his people do, then it's okay. you excuse everything they do. it's okay. don't criticize my man.

that's a double standard. the fight for civil rights was about eliminating double standards. double standards are at the heart of prejudice, discrimination and bigotry.

of course obama never personally described it as racist.

he had has spokesman, bill burton, come out and attack the new yorker.

this is a pattern that has been used over and over again in his campaign.

someone criticizes obama and obama's spokesman burton comes out and wails what about how it's dirty and an injustice. and three days later, after all the blogs and webboards are going nuts with obama supporters crying victim victim, then 'obama the reasonable' comes out and says 'everyone calm down.'

our savior.

good cop, bad cop. oldest trick in the book.

he's used it so many times already you have to be pretty dumb not to see it.

obama the victim. yes, i am having a f*cking laugh over that.

You're really slinging the BS today, ciaran.

Yes, I don't think any truckers in Alabama are going to buy and read the New Yorker. But they will see this cartoon. Why? Because of all the wailing over it by the humorless politically correct obama the victim camp.

fox news and the republicans are preaching to the converted. the bbc just said about 10% of americans surveyed believe obama is a muslim.

this cartoon is now all over US and international news.

show me the poll tomorrow or two days or a week from now that shows a spike in the percentage of americans who believe obama is a muslim.

not gonna happen because of this cartoon.

yeah, you're right: obama didn't say it was racist.

because it's not.

i never said it wasn't acceptable for the clintons to fight dirty, but i still believe bill knew what he was doing when he made his "jesse jackson" comment. whether that was racist or not is debateable, but it definitely back fired on the clinton campaign !! and i do believe that cartoon had racist overtones and that the obama camp were dead right to criticize it !!

If you think the undecided vote is going to be swayed by a New Yorker cartoon, then you really have very little understanding of american politics.

right now, the percentage of voters who are undecided is not very large.

of the issues voters cite the most as being important to them, terrorism is not in the top three, and won't be unless there is another terrorist attack.

this cartoon is not gonna change that.

i never said it wasn't acceptable for the clintons to fight dirty,

no, you just frequently criticize them for doing so, while excusing obama and his camp every time they do it. a bit hypocritical to say the least.

but i still believe bill knew what he was doing when he made his "jesse jackson" comment. whether that was racist or not is debateable, but it definitely back fired on the clinton campaign !!

if you think it's debatable, then reprint exactly what clinton said and support your point why referring to jesse jackson's presidential campaign in south carolina makes someone a "racist.''

i'm surprised you're not calling jesse jackson a racist, considering what he said.

and i do believe that cartoon had racist overtones and that the obama camp were dead right to criticize it !!

well, as obama himself hasn't publicly supported your view that it has racist overtones, then i guess you're in the radical minority.

when did i criticize them and when did i excuse obama .... i repeat i'm convinced bill clinton knew what he was unleashing when he made that comment. i didn't say it was racist, but he must have known some ppl would perceive it as such ... this is one of the shrewdest politicians of modern times we're talking about here not some boy scout !!

i don't know about being in the radical minority as it seems a lot of ppl feel the cartoon was racist !!
