Mazzy
Good question Marc, Let me be a bit controversial and disagree with the previous posters. I don't think beauty is subjective. I will make the case, here and now that the majority of people agree on what is beautiful. We just have been educated (ie. brainwashed) into politely saying that "everybody is beautiful" to make the pill easier to swallow for those unlucky enough to be born (objectively) ugly. I also don't believe in that "if you're a nice person you will be beautiful to everyone crap". Being nice and charismatic might improve things for you, but it still will not change the reality. Now for the demonstration: BEAUTIFUL UGLY BEAUTIFUL UGLY AVERAGE UGLY BEAUTIFUL Anybody disagreeing with my "subjective ranking". Now ask yourselves, who would you rather sit next to on the bus, or spend the evening with if you were given the choices. Anyone still want to argue that beauty is subjective? PeeMarc
i didnt want to narrow it down Nicky. Of course there is no right or wrong answer. Just wanted to see different peoples views. Eg Mazzy is about who wed rather sit next to or fornicate with, and yours is artistic or aesthetic. Wonder what others will be

BTW, I didn't mention "fornicating", just "spending the evening with". I guess for some people, it is harder to spend the evening with an attractive member of the opposite gender without thinking about sex than it is for others... But Nicky's point is well taken. I actually think that the same logic I used with people could be used with artistic production, non-human lifeform (plants), etc. There are "objectively" beautiful paintings and "objectively ugly" ones. I just didn't feel like putting 3 pages of pictures in my last post which is why I limited myself to human.
PeeMarc
another kind of beauty i have seen seemed to actually come from ugliness, and perhaps wouldnt even be so beautiful without the prior or juxtaposed ugly from which they emerge by surprise. In India i saw so much.. eg a moment of two kids playing while picking bits from rubbish dump, sari fabics on women in a slum, selfless generosity from a hopelessly poor person. These kinds of beauty described in the book "City of Joy", which bring a tear to the eye. (am online on my phone now so cant post pics)

I also recognize that their will be circumstances where people will not arrive at a concensus on the "objective beauty" of a person, an object or a phenomenon. However, In most cases it will be possible to arrive at an objective concensus conclusion, people just don't like admiting it. So we go on pretending that "everybody is beautiful in their own ways". This kind of poltical correctness annoys me, hence my earlier comment.
funky_house
Found this article. It seems that our perceptions of human beauty are built in us. "Beauty is in the phi of the beholder." It has long been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and thought that beauty varies by race, culture or era. The evidence, however, shows that our perception of physical beauty is hard wired into our being and based on how closely one's features reflect phi in their proportions. Take another look at beauty through the eyes of medical science. A template for human beauty is found in phi and the pentagon Dr. Stephen Marquardt has studied human beauty for years in his practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Marquardt performed cross-cultural surveys on beauty and found that all groups had the same perceptions of facial beauty. He also analyzed the human face from ancient times to the modern day. Through his research, he discovered that beauty is not only related to phi, but can be defined for both genders and for all races, cultures and eras with the beauty mask which he developed and patented. This mask uses the pentagon and decagon as its foundation, which embody phi in all their dimensions.
petey
I think there is a distinction between beauty and attractive. I think the concept of beauty is more personal and is indeed subjective, while attractive is more objective. For example, the first picture in Mazzy's post I do not find beautiful. While I recognize that she is attractive, she doesn't trigger a beautiful response in me. The last picture in his post i do find beautiful. Beauty, I believe, is in the eye of the beholder. Attractiveness is universal.

Nave
When I was just a 9th grader, I made a pair of pants..sewed by my own hand. And I must say..my mom hated them..when mommy who's good at making clothes and design saw my masterpiece , she wanted to throw them away so so so so so so much. But I kept them...I was proud of them and somehow I thought I kinda like the pink polka dots! One day, when I was still living with my parents ( must be decades ago ), I put on a dress that I had no confidence at all and I even scared mysel in the mirror. My dad then walked to me and said 'ur pretty, hun' ...I found the reason why he said that when we were sitting drunk together one night...he said ...'if i didnt say that to my own offspring, who would ?' I guess..pretty much its only in the eys of the beholder cuz not everyone sees exactly the same..besides you can't force anyone's thought ! To me..'beauty' is more than satisfaction to your eyes...but it goes deep to your soul and sometimes you don't need your eyes to see that but you need just a good soul and an open heart. Like how much my ugly pants meant so much to me cuz they were my very own.. Like how my dad loves me cuz I am his own. Its more than the looks...and its satisfaction to the soul ! Like how I love to watch stars when other ppl may say that it gives the pain in their necks !!

PeeMarc
mazzy, i agree that there is a universal beauty, but as Petey says, this is more about attraction. The idea that humans have a pre programmed 'proportion' concept (from memory it is 1:1.68... which i believe to also be the Golden Mean proportion) of what is attractive in a partner has been researched a lot. But i think you will find it is to with how human seek mating partners, hence my use of the word 'fornicate' before.
