Taxi drivers block roads at Victory Monument

Some 20 taxi drivers used their cars to block two roads at the Victory Monument at noon Thursday to pressure the government to resign.

They started blocking the inbound Rajvithi Road in front of the Center One shopping mall at 12:30 pm and later on blocked the inbound Phayathai Road.

The members of the Taxi Community Radio Club said if the government refused to resign by 4 pm, they would use 20,000 taxis to block all roads in Bangkok.

hmmm from what i have seen now.. it quite serious cuz victory monument is center and connect to the 4 main roads, Ratchavithi, Phayathai, Phahonyothin connected to Dindaeng. Near Victory monument on Ratchavithi Road has 7 hospital there...such as Ratchavithi Hospital, Children hospital, Neuro hospital, Skin hospital, Rama, I'm thinking about ppl who get sick and stuck in that area.

at least they are keeping this political situation in domestic , they won't block the airport !

What if they do?

and how about Asian Summit...?

I'm disagree about blocking the airport but i care about critical patients who stuck in there, don't you?

For the moment the red are not going to the airport so no reason to talk about that. Also a few month i was stuck in a big traffic jam, thanks to the PAD,and as far as i recall, they werent really worried about critical patient either.

SO yes the red shirt is doing bad things right now,but for the moment ,it is less worse that what the PAD have down before. For me,at the end,it is pretty much the same whatever the color they are wearing.

Well, it is deadly to be critical patient in Bangkok any time of the day, so this block is just more of the same. I am really sad whenever I see ambulances stuck in traffic here. What is needed is lots of hospital helicopters. This block well, it is for the Thailands good right. Same as how PAD excused their actions. So, lets sit back, relax, hope that we don't end up in critical condition or accident near Victory monument and enjoy the Thai way. Where is my som tam damn it!

Isn't it the way we are? just hope that after all we have done ,our country would eventually improve in many ways ...but who will be the white knight shining amor? we have to find out.

Be ready for our own actions ,the wheel of karma will come shortly...i justi hope that in the next 10 years when my children grow up ,there will be a rewrite of (the fact) Thai histories.

At first they were exercising their rights to make a protest. Now they have stepped into illegal activity by attempting to overthrow the government. That's definitely not ok by the constitution.

I don't think they realise how ridiculous they look, using illegal mob tactics in the name of democracy. Poor little red puppets.

No, YOU everyone needs to be that Knight. There is no single person to "save you". It all depends on your own actions, personally and collectively. That is where the change has to come.

"Be ready for our own actions ,the wheel of karma will come shortly...i justi hope that in the next 10 years when my children grow up ,there will be a rewrite of (the fact) Thai histories."

If you demand that, because currently Thai school books are written in way that could not pass any proper standards, the history has been written like the country lives and dies by one person, the Knight in Shining armor, without any collective responsibility of the Thais themselves. The karma, the rulers, putting your trust in them makes Thais lazy, without any guilt or responsibility of your own actions. Karma removes any TRUE causality from your actions. If you plant rice, you will get rice, but Thai version of karma says you plant rice, you can get oranges. You were born a rice farmer, you die a rice farmer. You were born business man, you die a business man...

"but hey we can chill out.. no one get sick and go to those hospitals... so why you care, right?"

Yep. Selfishness, something so not only western quality. ;) Ps. It was good posting, I also opened my tv to see whats on the news because of this news snippet that you posted.

Constitution is just a piece of toilet paper. It gets renewed every 10 years anyway. Constitution does not really matter when you are throwin goverments over by coups or street protests and what not. I think there could be market for Thai puppets, seems they are everywhere these years. ;) I wonder would anyone else buy them though? or is the quality more uh, internal consumption only.,..

p'Neo, it's sarcastic. :? my sarcastic doesn't work here. lol.

Someone is saying "Som Nam Na" I don't know Som Nam Na for who? may be PAD. I don't know ppl in the hospital who can't go out and get in are PAD.

And yes we can see embulance around stuck in traffic but not like this... road didn't block we just have traffic problem and it can flow at some point.

Everybody has the right to protest as long as they stay within the legal limits.

When people, no matter which color of shirt they wear, start blocking roads in a deliberate attempt to inconvenience people there is only one set of actions that should be taken:

(1) tow the vehicles away

(2) take away the drivers licenses of the drivers for at least 5 years for committing a serious traffic offence (namely obstructing free flow of traffic by parking your car in the middle of traffic, which can lead to injuries and death... It was rightly brought up that there is a possibility that emergency services get cought up in the blockade)

(3) in case of repeated offences, confiscate the vehicles

That is the only way to go about it.

There are a lot of people without a job so the positions of those taxi drivers who deliberately hold up traffic will easily be filled up with other people eager to look after their family without bringing the economy down even further.

I hope the best for Thailand on overcoming these difficult years.

Sorry I'm a bit dumb sometimes

Sometimes people say som nam na when something bad happens, without thinking about what they're really saying. In this case it makes no sense, except for maybe "Thailand voted for corrupt politicians and lapped up their lies for so long that the country is now in a total mess".

Son nam na? :eh:

Did you see the red shirts on TV? They're begging for a fight. If the police or the army steps in now it could be civil war. The best thing the govt can do is abide by peaceful lawfullness and wait for the red shirts to make fools of themselves, which they probably will eventually (if not already).

FYI

Doctor of Ramathipbodi Hospital asks red shirts to open access for patients

Director of Ramathipbodi Hospital which is close to the Victory Monument asked red shirts protesters on Thursday to open access to the monument to facilitate patients coming in and out of the hospital.

Ass Doctor Thun Suphatpun said that there are large number of patients who wanted to receive treatment at the hospital but could not do so because the red shirts protesters, mostly taxi drivers, used their vehicles to block the road access to the monument.

There are many patients who wanted to go home but could not do so due to the blockage.

"I suggest people who seek treatment of my hospital to change their mind and go to other hospitals. Now the problem is for those who wanted to leave the hospital because they could not leave the hospital.," the doctor said.

He said he begged again for the red shirts protesters to open access for the patients.

That's the problem with letting it come to far. What they can start with is photograph the vehicles' license plates and notify the taxi companies that their cars will be confiscated after the rally if they are not removed before 6pm so they can put pressure on the people who rent the cars from them.

It just proves one more thing... More taxis is not the answer to Bangkok. Bring on more BTS, MRT and public transportation.

I agree as it is not like taxis are never creating traffic jams parked on the sides of roads waiting for a fare and blocking a lane or two. Half the time taxis are blocking the areas around the bus stops at Victory monument which means the buses park a few lanes out. The place is organised chaos on a daily basis.

They have a right to protest. Let them block key city roads just before Songkran. A good way to attract support!

I have found it interesting that no one has moaned and complained about the red shirts , DAAD/UDD, surrounding govt house for the last two weeks and blocking roads. Compare that to the reaction by many farang TF members expressed last August when the PAD did exactly the same thing (prior to occupying Govt House). Condemnation abounded on the forums, yet for the last two weeks until today there has been silence.

OK now Metor bus stop running... and I heard that they will close BTS and MRT.

From my mom report, she is watching news... said they blocked express way too but she doesn't know which one.
