thank you it was a bit of a malevolence rage wasn't it

but hey you know it's just a typical walk down S-street. if you caught a cab ride for about 45 baht it may save you all the drama of dogging people etc. I guess. you probably even would make it to your destination at the same time after street traffic.. but I like to walk..a walk down S-street kinda reminds me of that old arcade game paper boy except you don't get any points for dogging all the destractions..

I have my own bike. So when I'm on it they rarely catch up me. BUT I work on Suk 14, and tend to eat in the area at night... So a short walk to 7-11 or sitting roadside at a raan-ahan can be ... ... >_<

Vlad I understand what you are saying I clearly get it.. a tourist doesn't have to live in it day in day out it can be annoying. they just go back home but someone that lives there its a different story I know when sonkran comes around its a good idea to avoid caos getting drenched everyblock or so its a good idea to take a road trip to the north or south or somewhere away from all the water and powder...

gin kow reeyang?....gets me a bit.

Of course I ate!..I'm not a homeless beggar.

Just trying to work this one out.

gin khaow = food

® eeyang = what

Am I right ? :D Bearing in mind Thai is often 'back to front' compared to the way we say it in English... food what ? Becomes - what food ? I've never heard this before ? What does this phrase mean ? A greeting ? Thanks for any explanation !

Edit - doh.... just been thinking about this, its something a beggar would say to you ?? 8)

Yes many linguistic habits can be annoying at times but they can also be an entry point into understanding more about culture and can open up many doors of greater insight. Where ever we are originally from, back home we have our own terms which convey a deeper meaning which 'outsiders' generally take a while to appreciate. Or we have our own habitual and overused terms.

I'm not thai but I would suggest that the greeting highlights the historical importance of rice & food in culture and it also has a strong social economic and regional context (central plains and NE). Your generally not going to hear this from an urban, upper middle class thai. I am sure some thai has done a multi-discinplinary Masters thesis on such an issue.

As you already know, being asked how you are in many places in asia it is common to greet people by asking them have they eaten or where are they going as we know there is more of a socialised conditioning of community information rather than our valued privacy in the west. I think it is just something one accepts if living in this part of the world.

When I lived in HK many years ago, the common similar greeting there was sik-jaw-fann-may which means 'have you eaten yet'. In Indonesia, it is common to greet someone by saying ke mana - 'where are you going'. It is impolite to directly say no to someone so it is common to refuse something that is offered by replying with terima kasih which means 'thank you'. You can leave empty handed if someone offers you a drink and you say thank you!

In Oz, one guy might greet another by saying, 'how is it hanging you wanker' but he is not asking him about his balls!

Why can't you WOMEN appreciate me for my mind and not my rock hard, perfectly cut gymnast body? WHY?

Or am I just another piece of meat for your exploitation?

mate, I so empathise; I have that exact same problem...

The most interesting one about Thai in my opinion is "Kor Torht" or Excuse me.

Translates to "request punishment". This goes back to the Thai cast system where the only way the servants could atone for screwing up is requesting punishment. I always have a bit of a chuckle in my throat when I say it. "Hit me baby, I like/deserve it!"

and dumper "Mai Pen Rai"! translation: Not is What :D
