It is expensive (comaratively). If you like a bit of adventure, try a 7-10 sailing trip in a traditional 'Dhoni' boat. You can do fantastic island hopping around some gorgeous little deserted atolls. The seafood is guaranteed fresh because they catch it daily and cook for you.

I think this is one of the best ways to really experience what the Maldives is about.

Check it out on the net.

Happy traveling :)

I've got reliable information here:

http://www.internationalreports.net/asiapacific/maldives/2002/thatsinking.html

' It seems that without international help, the Maldives are sunk. The problem?s dimensions are simply too large for one small nation to negotiate. ?Why can?t we all get together on this,? appeals Ali. ?Let?s put our minds together and realize that something radical, which matters to all of us, is happening.? For all of our sakes, one can only hope that the international community will start to listen to the Maldives? appeals before it is too late.'

Good to be aware of this... but who knows? this might be just political strategy or something..

If anyone is interested, Timbuktu is about 50% gone also - slowly being covered by the sands of the Western sahara. One of the most intriguing and ancient trading cities of the world :)

Unny, I have not been to Timbuktu. Ive only done Morocco (cycled from Marrakesh to Casablanca), the northern part of Mali and a bit of western Sahara. I would love to go one day though.
