PADANG BESAR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- The Anti-Smuggling Unit has foiled an attempt to smuggle sugar into Thailand, following the seizure of 120kg of the commodity from two pick-up vehicles at Padang Besar industrial area here today.The sugar, packed in 120 packets, was hidden among packets of flour and cooking oil in the Thai-registered vehicles when unit personnel conducted a check about 12.30pm.Also seized from the vehicles were 105kg of flour and 145kg of cooking oil.Unit commander Deputy Supt Zakaria Abdul Rahman said four Thai nationals, including two women, were detained to facilitate investigations.

Don't mock too much. We have seen an increasing number of young kids hooked on sucrose (street name; sugar) over the last few years. Young sugar addicts are seeking their fix any way they can; in cups of tea, in sweets, even sprinkled on strawberries. Glad to see the Thai police are cracking down on this dangerous substance and have realised that ya ba is actually harmless.

Its the Bangkok hilton for them. I have heard that they are even pressing it into cubes to sell now.

This ranks right up there with the bust of an American-owned company in Chonburi last year for using multiple copies of a software for which they owned only one license. Of course the software was produced by a Thai company, not Microsoft, Adobe, etc.
