LakeGeneve
The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere suffers from the largest earthquake on the island in over 200 years. And this after Haiti was hit by a couple of hurricanes last year! To early to be accurate but reports state that at least a few hundred have died and 3 million have been affected/displaced by the earthquake. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8456819.stm Some countries seem to really suffer more than others. I have some friends & colleagues working there, at this stage it is anyones guess if they are ok especially with many international orgs stating that some staff are missing. (The UN SG says that some 100 UN staff are missing). Send some prays, thoughts or dollars if you can.
pandorea
I'm watching the news on DR1 here at this moment. There was a local reporter on the news, he couldn't stop crying. Help from Unicef in DK and approx 10 million kroner are on the way. The first airplane already took off and some doctors and nurses from DK will be leaving Denmark tomorrow. My heart goes out to people ofl Haiti.

admin
A little bit off topic but organizing aid in situations like this is such a nightmare. You usually have little or no communications capability and suddenly you have hundreds or thousands of aid workers plopping down in the middle of everything with no clear idea as to where they should be going. I hope this is one of the ones that goes smoothly.

I was wondering if the suggestion was that others too could send contributions into the American Red Cross...or was it that Americans only should (or could) conribute through this site to helping poor souls out in Haiti? I am sure with the interenet there are ways that funds can be sent to the Red Cross from other lands...but there may be more effective and efficient ways to send aid from whereever you are :thumbleft: Nicky mentioned the Danes were already involved and I heard some help from the UK was in the air too! (many othesr, I would expect and hope by now) It is sounding especially brutal to Haiti...rather like the tidal wave... So where ever you are... maybe there is a way to make a difference.... Stramash
There will be fund-raising in other countries, but that text number will be US Specific. Plus the American Red Cross can only raise money in the US. Would imagine International Red Cross will coordinate between all their constituent countries, not to mention other International bodies. " International Red Cross will coordinate between all their constituent countries, not to mention other International bodies " I would imagine the same Iain, once they get set up! 7:24 PM EST (not looking any better --- yet) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34845446/ns/news-picture_stories/displaymode/1247/?beginSlide=

SweetieBabie
The righteous man of God, Pat Robertson. He never ceases to say incredibly stupid, insensitive, psychotic things on TV. And, you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.†True story. And so, the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.†And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti; on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, et cetera. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now, we’re helping the suffering people, and the suffering is unimaginable. Stramash
watching the BBC breakfast news on the relief effort. They were covering the arrivals of aid at the airport then looked at those departing. Certain degree of irony that one of the first groups to flee the disaster was a large group of christian missionaries. Surely they should be staying?? It's ok to hassle prostitutes but not help those who really need it??
samy5000
They have a massive f*cking disaster down there that is going to turn into total chaos in about 24 hours. No food, no water, no medical care, no shelter, no law and order. What has happened there makes New Orleans and Katrina pale in comparison. There are between 2.5 and 3 MILLION people who live there. There is no telling how many are dead. Virtually the entire city has been leveled. Less than one minute , and about 100.000 ppl lost their lifes ! (humanitarianism?) Ok beyond my habitual typos --- aside.... What I mean is Rush's rant has no business making this a politcal or race issue!(which WAS what he was doing) It is a human issue. No one such get credits here except hopefully a "thank you". MAYBE down the line, say a couple of weeks after these poor people are at least getting food and water, (if) Rush wishes to "Monday morning Quarterback" (forgive my American slang--this means reviewing what was done , after it has been done and you cannot un-do it) the US administration's response---that might be warrented.
