admin
What is the least confrontational way to deal with racist idiots who always feel a need to share their racist thoughts with you? Sometimes there are people you have to deal with in business and life and, especially here in Thailand, they make no real effort to hide their racism. What's the best way to deal with these kinds of people?

IMO, there's always something we can do about it. It's just we don't want to, we love being the same, feel safe, we hate confrontations. and look at Thailand today. There are certain things that you can just pretend like it's raining but hell sure not with all the racists.
koolbreez
I just say "excuse me, what did you say? I wasn't listening, thinking about something else important". drlovelife8
I hate it when people use race to bully people and...... ..... Well, I say suck it up and find a way not to be a victim. I have always been a minority where I have live in England, China, Greece, Thailand, Sri Lanka Blah Blah Blah. Being a white boy in Handsworth, Birmaingham was to no advantage. Plenty of the whities there used it as an excuse to fail. I also did from time to time. The point is over come the hurdles and become a better man. I loved Brian. from the same road, went on to be the European triple jump champ. Jason, world MT champ, Me Anglo-Irish MT champ. We and others found ways to be motivated by racism despite being from the same road as some serious losers. I also hate when people use it to gain. Although one might say that is an example of using the system to win.Trevor, great guy and mate applied to join the lcal crack team which I was working on. He said he knew he would get the job as there were no black people on the team, he wasn't great at his job and even smoked rocks a few times with clients!!!! Being black didn't make him better or worse, but it should have been about the person, not the colour. Use it to make you a winner. Obama doesn't seem to have let it stop him, Bill Cosby, Dev Patel, Imran Kahn, Kelly Holmes and loads of others. Deal with it as these did. Motivation for victory. admin
Actually, what I was talking about is when they set off on Thais, in front of Thais. Thai people are a nation, not a race. I could be wrong but arn't they part of asians as a race. Thais are a mixture of people from present day Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and China, who migrated and intermingled with the indigenous population. I think you are talking about people who are culturally unaware that this place does things slowly and errors are ignored to not make people lose face. Infact half the post on this forum are moans about Thai inefficiency. I say the same, Thais should use it as inspiration to better themselves or take it on the chin like the rest of use.... except misunderstanders of Islam. That ain't racism, save the word for when it's needed, like when Hispanic gangs use the killing of white women as a way to enter the gang. Or when Robet MUNGOBBY(bastard) orders 100's of falmers to be slaughterted.

I think it depends on that person's "intention" and "tone" though. We have the word "µÔà ¾×èáèÃ" (to address problems and fix them) Many of my comments are like that, when I express my opinions about Thai things which I think WE need to improve. (plz notice "WE") As you mentioned, I wouldnt call that "racist". (just for once I agree with Dr.)
koolbreez
Most people that are racist have no clue they are. They have no comprehension of what racism is to begin with, and thus have absolutely no idea they are making racist comments. Or they have been so run over by society that the only way they have of expressing themselves is to be racist, to get attention. You've seen this type of person How do you deal with them? It is usually pointless to tell them as they will have nothing to relate it to so they will denigh whole heartedly that they made a racist comment, or use the excuse that so, and so, doesn't care anyway so what's the big deal. You've all heard it before. The excuse that I belong to that particular element of society so what I say about them isn't racist is again a lack of understanding about what racism is. You hear this from people all the time too. How many times have you been referred to as farang by your wife/gf's family, with them having no concern that it is a racist comment, or taking the time to remember your name, and using it. That is racist, and used without any comprehension that it is, or caring that it is....lol. One of the biggest racist's I ever met was Bill Cosby. Sure, he pulled himself out of poverty, and made a lot of money, but he is a big racist, and a very bitter person.....off camera. I had to deal with him on a number of occasions when he preformed at Harrah's, and he is not anyone you want to be around. Again, I've found the best way to deal with racists is to just ignore them if you have to be around them, or unless it is unavoidable, don't be around them. English_Bob
I never have an issue with 'farang'. Even my most Westernised of friends use it. They are culturally aware and sensitive - there is no way they would use it in front of me if it had any negative connotation. And I use it myself while talking in Thai or English... And I'm not racist... against myself.

Oh man!! we have no intention say in the negative way... it's just a general word, not bad word, racist word... we call westerner like that please don't get us wrong. Same as you call us Thais. I know that Thais don't mean it in a negative way and I don't take it in a negative way but think about the fact that you even feel the need to have a special word for it. The reason many people might think it's rude or insulting is because to call someone a foreigner is usually meant as an insult or to make that person lower than you. Sort of like, that person is not one of us. In most western cultures we accept foreigners into our society. Hell, in the US the only true "Americans" are the people we almost hunted into extinction. So for us nearly everyone is from somewhere outside of America. But the moment you take the oath to become an American citizen you are an American. It doesn't matter if you come from Africa, Asia, Europe, or South America. You're an American. In Thailand you can never become Thai even though Thai is not a race. Even if you spend 10 or 20 years to become a Thai citizen, speak perfect Thai, have a Thai spouse and Thai children, Thais will never see you as Thai. You're always farang as long as your skin is a different color. Also, it depends on the usage. If I ask, "Oh, was he Thai or farang" I'm using it as an identifier. It is meant to describe if the person was Thai or a westerner. But I do actually find it a bit annoying in certain situations when some Thais won't even use the word "him" but instead just keep referring to me as "farang." Especially when they know my name but insist on calling me farang. Has the farang eaten yet? What does the farang want? Ask the farang. That kind of stuff. I mean, how would it feel if you came to visit me in the US and I introduced you to my friends and they said, "Hey, you should invite the foreigner to eat with us."? Wouldn't it seem much more welcoming if they said, "Hey, you should invite Neung to eat with us"? Using such a general word (foreigner) implies that you don't recognize someone as an individual. They're some sort of group. Like I said, I know how the Thais use the word so I don't get insulted by it and I do use it myself when make a distinction between Thai and not Thai but I do find it annoying sometimes when people refuse to acknowledge me as an individual and only see me as farang.
