What counts?

I believe being yourself is the most important thing you can do.

I hear this one alot, and although it sounds great, I completely disagree. To "be yourself" all the time is an incredible waste of life. I say be everything that you never were. It all counts.

If you are rich, try being poor for a little while. If you are loud and obnoxious, be quiet and reserved. If you are outgoing, try being dull. Once you are capable of being everything, then you have a choice. And with choice comes "happiness" ... which is actually just a chemical pathway in your brain.

So ignore what I just said, and go get some Prozac....PAM!

for some reason....

-difference- counts

in term of a word -difference-

Being yourself .... in your very own way.

... dont seem to agree with anyone easily

... till you have learn for yourself... thats kind of CoOL

.... mmmm is it called -Confidence- ??

then...

- Confidence- counts

Interesting concept but not one that I think works.

Take your idea of if you are rich, try being poor. Well you can wear crappy clothes, and sell your merc and buy a Soluna. You can take up smoking, go play pool in soi 4 and even get yourself a boring job doing nothing all day. So you can pretend to be poor but you are just pretending. If you are rich you can pretend to be poor but you are never really going to KNOW what it is like to be poor. Cos when you get bored of pretending to be poor you will just go off and do something else. Poor people dont have that choice. So I dont like that idea.

I also disagree with your concept 'with choice comes 'happiness''. Now that might seem a contradiction after what I said about poor people who have no choices. But what I mean is this. People without choices think that having choices will give them happiness but I am not so sure it will. In fact, I think one of the problems of modern life is that we have too many choices. Under the old culture the fear was that you didnt have enough friends. Now I think with the mobile phone and the internet you can have as many friends as you like. And maybe the new loneliness is that you have so many 'acquaintances' that you dont have any or many 'real friends'. And the same sort of ideas apply to jobs and restaurants and menus with 300 things to choose from.

So anyway I am sticking with the 'be yourself concept'.

As for happiness, I still say that we generate most of our happiness from the happiness we create in other people. If we work hard at making our close friends, family and lover(s) happy then we are likely to lead a pretty happy life.

I still contend that what counts is options ... and that it is always better to be "option rich" than to be "option poor." If you wanted, you could give up all your choices of food, cars, homes, and jobs to spend some time finding "happiness" in simply making others happy. You are lucky, you have that option. Other people don't.

I think must of us will find that we are not ready to give up our miserable choices

...and do you really believe that what counts most in life is making your friend, family and lover happy.

(I dropped the "s" in friends and lovers because, based on your argument, being stuck with one option is better than having many)

Bjay,

A very thoughtful post.

But you need to see things from my point of view. First, I will tell you something that I dont usually post on the internet. I am 'option rich'. I can drive whatever '*******' car I want to. So I will not disagree with you that having more options when you are 'option poor' is better. I agree entirely.

I simply say that being 'option rich' does not make you happy. Just to give you an example. A restaurant that has 2 options for starter, main course and desert but changes their menu every day is more 'interesting' to me than a restaurant with 300 choices on the menu. At the end of the day if I dont like the food it doesnt matter that much but it is fun to try something different.

Now if you are already 'option rich' you then have to ask what makes you happy? Is it a bigger faster car? Or a younger faster model? Or is it something else?

In my opinion and it is only my opinion - we, as humans, derive most of our pleasure - our happiness - in the happiness we create in other individuals. Maybe that is something I can only see from my perspective. Maybe satisfying your own selfish wants is the root to your happiness and maybe just trying different things will make you happy. I have tried pretty much everything and this is the course I choose to live my life with maximum happiness.

I define "poor" as limited in options or choices, and I think that is the most acceptable definition.

.

i think a more tenable definition of "poor" is lacking in material wealth and few or no possessions.

i have met materially rich people who for various reasons were limited in options or choices in some way, so calling them "poor" is confusing considering they got stacks of money.

After thinking it through a bit more:

Looks counts ... because attractive people have more options.

Youth counts ... because young people have more options.

Money counts ... because rich people have more options.

Brains count ... because smart people have more options.

Those who are born without money, looks, or brains will usually do everything within their power to stop "being themselves." They set out to expand their options and choices by grooming themselves, going to school, and working.

So it may not be the options themselves that count, but rather our ability to expand our "menu" and to use our choices to provide ourselves, or those we care for, with the things that do count.

... its a matter < 3/4> of -LUCK- ... Mmmm accident of Brith.... eh ?

Well there are clearly 2 sides to the equation. What you are born with? And what you do with what you are born with?

For instance a bar girl is essentially a girl with limited choices - looks and youth only - who trades them for money (and thus security).

What you have so far failed to see is the 'danger' of having too many choices. That for many people they are so busy examining all the different choices, weighing them up, experimenting that before they know it, they dont have the same choices as they had before.

..... and the lesson is .......

No matter how loads or how better of options One could have...

One still could NOT be able to have them all....

One still could NOT be able to have everything....

One still had to choose .... no matter how rich/smart/handsome

*Sigh* ........ maybe life is fair after all... eh ?

Sure, if one happens to be indecisive and uncertain about what is wanted from life then one runs the risk of wasting a lot of time.

Ok and that is exactly my point. I believe there is an awful lot of people out there who are indecisive and uncertain about what they want in life and who are wasting a lot of their time.

Let's face it most of us on this website have a fairly high degree of choice when it comes to our carreers but how much advice and education did we get to make that choice. In my case, absolutely none. They used to teach me Latin at school because that is what they had been teaching for 500 years. They gave me 3 month breaks in the summer because 200 years ago it made sense to release the children from school to collect the harvest. Most people do not plan their carreers they some how drift into them from university and then some drift in and out of jobs with no great meaning and wonder what they are going to do.

And even if you know what you want from your friends, how the hell do you find them from 21,000 people on a website? Do you jeeb the ones who look cute and kind of slutty on the basis that a good shag aint a bad start (even if you are 300th in the queue)? Or do you look at their taste in restaurants so you can share a good meal? Personally I have no idea.

Like said before I also think, what counts is personal happiness. And it's up to each individual to define what this means for him/her.

The problem I see is that we have many options (some more, some less). But as robbie said, how to make the right choices? I have no idea, too :!:

What I see is that brain / money / looks / youth (in this order) gives you more options. But this also implies that its getting harder to make the right choice :-)

I work very often in projects with international people, specialist in their field. I think that most people will consider them as extremely educated and successful in their job. Definitely people with lot of options...

On the other hand I never have seen so many people with personal problems! So perhaps an explanation: Brain and money gives you the ability to see the options and choices you have. As said before others don't know that they don't know ( = don't see ).

Perhaps in average this makes life easier and happier :?:

welll... if we narrow it down only on TF... what counts??

I supoose for most of ppl ... it would probably be -looks- <aka PiCs>

BUT for me..

Those little things count...

Say....

-Profiles-

We are evenly allowed to have only a page to describe ourself...

.. some ppl could be able to catch my eyes by a page .... some ppl could NOT..

For some reason some ppl manage to be very Outstanding....

< 3 very Good Examples --->>> yellowsubmarine, OoO & bjay>

-Forums-

... some ppl could be able to stop me to read their posts & stuff...

< R36, LR, 2U, STCL, YellowSubmarine, AtomicFlower, SiamHotel, bjay, Slurms, Zeus, Posh, etc.,>

...some ppl could NOT be able to....

No offence.. but I dont even waste my time to look for what they have written... dont even notice that they are here existing on TF..

-Journals-

... some ppl could be able to write something very interesting .... and for some reason .. you really do wait for them to write more as you want to go back to read what they will come up wiht ...

< my Fav Journal writers --->>> OoO, Smartass, etc.,>

Anyway... on TF... those little things count.. < for me>

donia66.gif

-WB-

PS... I think .. one of the reasons why I am being on TF... its because I do naturally like to READ..
