Mr_Softie
AIDS man went on Thai sex spree CHAIYAPHUM: -- A German national is believed to have deliberately infected more than 450 young women with the HIV/AIDS virus in Thailand's northern Chaiyaphum province. The one-legged naval veteran is in jail for overstaying his 30-day tourist visa by three years. His non-immigrant visa had expired in 2001. Hans-Otto Schiemann, 56, who has lived in Thailand for nine years, said he went on a sexual rampage after testing positive to HIV/AIDS in 2001. He would cruise in his car, looking for groups of young people after school and offering them the equivalent of their parents' monthly wages to have unprotected sex. They generally agreed. His core prey consisted of young girls, 15 and older. "They sell their children here," he said. "The only reason I'm in jail is because I had sex with a policeman's daughter." Schiemann, who was living off a German disability pension, had also offered loans to poor people in return for use of their daughters. A spokesman for the German embassy said Schiemann had been detained for overstaying his visa but the embassy was not aware of other allegations. The deputy head of the provincial police station, Kampol Nonuch, said that under Thai law Schiemann could not be held for deliberately spreading the AIDS virus. "Look, we have him on visa charges, but we want to make it much harder for him than that . . . if we let him go, he might just end up in Cambodia, Laos or Burma and keep spreading this disease," he said. The Public Health Ministry wants Chaiyaphum's young women tested for HIV, regardless of whether they have had sex with Schiemann. Local hospital staff had posted more than 2000 warnings about the German, urging girls to have blood tests. In response to the appeal, 66 girls had tested positive out of a town of 30,000 people. "We don't know how many people he has infected, but it's somewhere in the vicinity of 400 to 500," a health official said. Schiemann's common-law wife, Noi, is dying from AIDS and has allegedly suffered several violent attacks by Schiemann. cs3602001
Yes, this man is very sick, very sick indeed, he has ruined lives, stolen dreams and destroyed families. As for dealing with a guy like this.....I cannot post on here what I would do to him. Actually I heard of a similar case in Phuket, it was not publisised, but I know a guy who lived there and was aquainted with a guy who was HIV+ and the guy started bragging about boning working girls without condoms. TheFix
Its interesting to read this as this weekend I will be walking 10k for donations given to the Southern Arizona Aids foundation. It makes you realize what one person can do for good or bad. Its easier to do bad to more people than it is to do good. It makes me think that we all have to try much harder to do good!!!!!! This is a lesson for us all. TheFix
zeusbheld
absolutely this guy should be facing hundreds of attempted murder charges, and at least several dozen murder charges. or give him to me for a couple days, well... you dont wanna know exactly what would happen. Japhrodisiac
What Fix says rings as true. Its amazing how destructive one human can be with a plan and the evil will to pull it off. The young, the poor, innocent folks suffering such disgaceful indignities at the hands of a bitter old monster. Wow, dont know what to say, just sad. Loburt
Uuummmmm ..... if this report is true, then I agree with everything that has been said. I've noticed this story in the local papers over the past couple of days. However, I've read it with a BIG grain of salt. Knowing the quality of reporters for local papers in the provinces (and in some cases in Bangkok), I've learned not to take anything at face value. I'm not saying this didn't happen. I don't know. I'm saying I find the report just a wee bit suspicious.

Loburt
Good advice. Sadly, more and more young Thais are NOT taking it, studies are showing. I really doubt this tale will change that. More than likely, it will just fuel more xenophobia.

AlwaysCocaCola
Scary foreigners.... Its a known fact that many foriegners come to Thailand because of the prostiution. People I meet all over the world give me this snicker when I say I'm Thai. Asking about how easy it is to get "laid." And if it really is that easy to get laid? So I'm not exactly sure what you mean by, Thai men and Thai Habits? I find that pretty offensive. For the most part, I believe the article. As in it demostrates, humans are capable of anything, and everything that may seem unimaginable to the mind. So the incident doesn't surprise me at all. Ngairo
It's hard to believe in anyone's culture that the authorities are powerless over such allegations by a one legged German. Refusing an aids test?....hardly.....the authorities are known for working outside the law on many occasions and I don't think his resistance to such a request would mount to anything. Although they are saying that under Thai law, he can't be charged with any offense relating to his actions, he can be charged under international law which the Thai authorities can administer. With the destruction he has supossidly caused, I can't believe he is being detained on immigration matters only.

So I'm not exactly sure what you mean by, Thai men and Thai Habits? I find that pretty offensive. I think what is meant by Thai men and Thai habits is that the overhwelming majority of prostitution in this country involves Thai men patronizing Thai prostitutes. Do you think this German guy was the only man paying for sex in Chaiyaphum or wherever? Do you think there have been no Thai men or women who have known they were HIV positive and still went out and had unprotected sex? For all the media attention places like Patpong, etc., get, they represent a very tiny slice of the prostitution industry here. If the level of prostitution is considered very high here, then the blame for that would basically have to be with Thai men, as they make up easily more than 95% of the men patronizing the prostitutes, and also the bar and brothel owners. That doesn't mean that the level of prostitution is consistent with the morality of all Thais or that there aren't Thais who don't like the way things and would like to see them changed, but the prostitution problem here wasn't created by foreigners. And if no foreigners came here for paid sex, the level of prostitution here would still be extremely high. Those are facts. Blaming foreigners for the country's reputation is off base. When the Thai men who run this country decide to change what the situation is regarding prostitution, then the country's reputation will change. What has the person who was elected to run this country four years ago done to change any of this? Why does he have a tourism minister whose family owns brothels on the Eastern Seaboard? zeusbheld
regardless of the integrity of the reporters involved, news stories really aren't neutral.even if the reporters, interviewees etc. don't knowingly have an agenda, we live in and have always lived in a world of incomplete information. however, for my purposes here i'm going to assume the bbc report is true. there are clearly at least two completely separate issues on the table here. one is the thailand and its relationship to, and reputation for, prostitution. the other, is a human being infected with the HIV virus knowingly having unprotected sex with another human being. as to the first issue, i don't know enough about it. i've been to thailand twice and i'm not terribly familiar with thai culture, or more specifically prostitution in thailand. however, i will say that anyone who thinks there is anyplace on the planet that doesn't have prostitution has their head deeply and firmly embedded in their ass. but hypothetically, let's say that on mt. olympos there is *no* prostitution. i guarantee that if mr schiemann were to roll up to mt. olympos with a proportionally large wad of cash that he could create prostitution and bang enough young women to spread his disease. that's economic reality. bringing us to the second issue--an HIV carrier knowingly having unprotected sex without informing the person he's having sex with of his/her HIV status. that seems pretty straightforward to me--it should be considered attempted murder and tried accordingly. Whatever the facts really are in this story, they can't be confirmed in a Thai chat room.
