Princess
Princess:English food is just fine. I know everyone thinks Indian food is great and everyone says 'oh how can u like English food after eating Indian' but honestly...it's so rich and heavy that all it does is make me yak(quite literally) - it's not the taste, just the way it's made. Nice to see you have an appreciation of the subtle flavours of English cuisine.. But I was suprised by you opinion of Indian food...especially in such a general way... I hate to preach to the choir..but there are many many types of Indian tucker... Yes the Northern type food mostly found in UK is heavy..rich redolant gravies, breads and roated meats.. But what about the Southern style dishes?...Surely the Tamil vegetarian and fish based curries and dahls aren't that rich.. Or did you just mean the use of ghee?....was just interested cos spent alot of time eating Indian food or all types in many regions..Kinda my favorite....up there with Japanese, home cooked English food and of course Thai... I lived in South India too PD - it's not that I don't like Indian food - I just don't like the way it makes me feel afterwards. Also, you have to realise that what foreigners call 'Indian food' really isn't - we'd only eat that kind of food at a lavish wedding or religious ceremony. Therefore, it is loaded with spices and yes, lots and lots of ghee (even if it comes from North India). Indian food cooked everyday at home is much lighter but I still can't eat it on a regular basis. Believe me when I go home I'm more likely to have sheperd's pie and roast lamb than curry with naan. i stayed at my friend's house in bombay and et what the maid cooked. also, stuts (my friend) being a bollywood type, knowed all the good restaurants. vedding food was, IMO, some of the best food of ANY kind i've ever had. ok you claim english food is light yet you cite shepherd's pie and roast lamb. what next, an ode to the healthy aspects of fish and chips? Words in my mouth Zeus? What I said was 'Indian food is heavy'...that does not mean that I think English food is light. It just doesn't make me feel like I've swallowed a rock afterwards. Again, Indian food is not terrible tastewise...but what it does to your system afterwards doesn't make me want to eat it. Then again it may just be me. If I have a meal and go to sleep/relax afterwards, I wake up with a really bad bodyache. If the meal I had was rich/spicy, this effect is multiplied x 10 - can't blame me from staying away from the ghee and masala. English/Lebanese/Thai food seem to be better - while they are all rich in their own way, they are less harsh on the DS.
PattayaDaz
Yes I know what you mean... When I worked in Chennai the Indian crew were amazed at my ability to eat local food...All the other expats were having a terible time of it The Indian camp boss reckon'd I was the only white guy in history to go to India and get constipated Oh yes Princess...I know that UK style Indian food bears little resembance to the everyday Indian diet in India.. The homestyle indian food my friends eat in Singapore is nothing like the UK food either..Mostly Dahl...light fish curries...chapati's and dosai...Yum As for the hammering English food gets...its very undeserved because good English food needs to be home cooked...the stuff in cafe's, reasturants and hotel shas little in common with the real thing...It doesn't have to be heavy and stodgy either...hard to beat a good steak & kidney pudding, rabbit casserole or oxtail stew with suet dumplings....none of the dishes are hightly seasoned but depend on the flavour of good ingredients and slow cooking...most of the problem comes from foreigners trying to cook trad English food..they can't believe the seasoning is so simple..so they start to add other items to ''improve'' the flavour...usually ending with a mess that has nothing in common with the original.. I must say though that there are places in Dubai where you'll get a really good Indian meal without having your tummy cry foul.
zeusbheld
Words in my mouth Zeus? What I said was 'Indian food is heavy'...that does not mean that I think English food is light. actually you did say exactly that upon returning from england, in a conversation in real life. we'll strike it from the record, however, as you were under duress--i was making fun of you for liking english food. It just doesn't make me feel like I've swallowed a rock afterwards. Again, Indian food is not terrible tastewise...but what it does to your system afterwards doesn't make me want to eat it. doesnt affect my system but i am more daunted by the *size* many indians achieve on a steady diet of indian food... of course, there are some hefty brits too... and americans? don't even go there... but i *never* said american food is good. Then again it may just be me. If I have a meal and go to sleep/relax afterwards, I wake up with a really bad bodyache. I didn't know it was possible to squirm over food but if I'll squirm over anything, it's gotta be English cream tea with those heavenly, yummy scones *drool*
chrispilok
Croissants taste like silly putty (take my word for it)...or like something you'd find in the bakery section of a Big-C *yak* Most croissants in Bangkok taste like silly putty maybe... but that's more a comment on Bangkok bakeries than croissants. Real croissants are made with real high-grade butter, not margarine. There's no such thing as a cheap AND good croissant. I've had croissants *everywhere*...from gourmet bakeries to five star hotels to airplane trays - I hate em all. Go to France. Get up early, say 6:30 or so (I know painful, but trust me, it'll be worth it) and go to the local bakery. They'll just have finished baking the morning bread. Have a croissant still warm from the oven. 100 baht says you will love it.
OutOfOrder
Just funny how in colloquial English both the words 'CRUMPET' and 'MUFFIN' have sexual connotations... As in... Can't wait to get home for some ''crumpet'' OR...EErre she's a right wonderful piece of crumpet she is..( Daz assumes slow Northern bumkin accent) OR...I'd give her a right good 'muffin'....... i think its just all in your head, daz

If you can invade a country for oil you can invade a country for food. You could probably stand for the presidency on the back of a campaign like that. now there's a plan... zeusbheld for president! campaign slogan: **** oil, **** your SUV, let's EAT. Scones are only dense when old and packaged, I don't like them myself but there is a world of difference between a fresh scone with cream and jam and the packaged bricks they flog off overseas no, i've had allegedly world class fresh scones in london, and like good croissaints they are deceptively dense. you dont feel it until later... French food isn't really that great on a daily home fare basis and you'd have to put up with being thought of as arrogant, insensitive and rude... no one would ever think that of me. it's an utterly implausible theory. which would be really hard for Americans and your humble self americans are too stupid to care, it would only bother them if you rephrased it to arrogant, insensitive and rude like the british. but it probably would bother them more to adopt french food, because the french... well... they just... hate... freedom. pr0nmaster
scones are different from coffee shop to coffee shop..bakery to bakery...kitchen to kitchen.....I find the idea ludicrous that they are found populated in little groups of varying quality in different cities..... here's a nice "filler" though....acording to my strange taste avocado , banana ,caramel and crushed peanuts
