inamorato25
In a lot of situations, even a lot of Thai's dont use the tones correctly. I studied at Thai school for a total of 10 lessons (What? Not enough to qualify as a Native Speaker of Thai? ) -- in the book I was using, and according to my teacher, as long as your sentences are clear and relate to context, tones don't matter for much, since people can fill in the gaps. But what DOES matter, they say, is the length of vowels. So if you say "sai" instead of "saai" or something like that, you might not be understood. Native Thai speakers, would you agree with this? Or did I waste all my money on those 10 classes??
dannyboy
"What i don't like is the Filipino/a teacher's at my school who can't pronounce , spell or use basic grammar rules correctly and are getting paid to be " English teachers " Examples......Krocodile I looking for Today is June 20 ( Twentieth, ordinal numbers )" I think Philipino English is charming and prefer to listen to it, broken or not, over British English anytime. Sorry if my poor english disturbs you native speakers... Why do i feel intimidated by someone who can't use a language properly? I just feel sad that they are butchering my language, the mistakes i pointed out would be remedied with simple schooling. In all fairness to them , they have got a lot of courage to fly to another country and pass themselves off as an English teacher, so let's not worry about the actual teaching and if it's correct or not and listen to the " charming "Filipino English . ROLMFAO. So it's ok to short change the students with inferior language skills as long as it sounds good ?
English_George
.....you have to try............everyone has to try.. So there are two paths to follow (i) Stay here and insist that everyone can speak English and that they must be stupid if they cannot understand your 'fast paced colloquialisms' (ii) Appreciate that you are a guest and act accordingly; learn some of the language and show some respect. I have found that talking Thai in a 'Scouser' accent, helps accentuate the tones of the Thai language............ ........Liverpool has inadvertently.........well.........'done good' "When you walk through the streets, hold your head up high, and don't be afraid to talk Thai At the end of the road is a noodle shop, and your chance to try and..... comply, with more than a 'Wai' Walk on, walk on, with a scouser tone in your heart, and you'll never want to part!!!!, ......... except when you're incoherent, and it falls apart"

paulgh3rd
for us weterners to speak any of the asian languages we should get huge props just for the effort because they are all so compeltely opposite to our language. Most farangs are tone deaf and the learning of accents on words is the hardest part of all the asian languages. So without intense study, practice and more important upkeep of your skills it is very hard to be a well spoke thai speaker (or any other asian language if you're a farang. RYU666
when thai people chat together I understand a bit, I mean I understand at least the sense what they're talking about. But it's really hard for me to give an answer in Thai, I always switch to english :? probably it's because I had many times the same experience as a poster before. If you don't pronounce a word properly mai khao djai. Even though it would be possible to understand with a little bit fantasy ... but no, you don't speak it correctly so they won't understand you. So at the moment I really only speak what I know 100% I can speak correctly. But on the other side, it's also really annoying if a farang learns his thai words at a bar ***** from issan. they even don't realize that everybody know where he learned this words from
