Thai Stockmarket

I invested in the chinese and india market. I am up 40 percent return for the year.

thailand should do better after the election. you have to think long term if you are going to invest in thai market. you got to have stomach for the up and down.

Actually it is one of the reasons I like the Thai stockmarket - it actually has some decent fundamentals. At the beginning of the year the PE of the market was a little over 8 (what downside is there on that?) and although the market has risen 40% this year the PE is only about 11.

I reckon you are just very brave investing stocks where PEs are 40-50x and you know it isnt going to last for ever. Thailand once got to a PE of 36x at the end of 1993 when the stockmarket peaked at 1783 - should get back there within the next 5-10 years.

....It's all Greek to me...........

.......Greek stock market, great returns, great PE,

....Tsatziki up 4%

.......I'm up 40% for the year.............usually get 8-9 hours sleep a night

....seriously though guys, how much do you need to dabble on the Thai stock exchange?

...Or is it one of those "If you have to ask..." questions?"

Stockmarkets especially in Asia have been made very friendly to retail investors. I just got back from visiting artists in Vietnam - now there all the artists punt the stockmarket like crazy. Its mad - you go there to discuss art and all they want to do is talk about ipos.

Seriously there is virtually no such thing as a minimum trade, minimum commission or a small punter. There are loads of 'investors' out there with 10 stocks - Bt10k invested in each and a portfolio of Bt100k.

interesting question.

i don't believe in the concept of "if you need to ask". if i could afford to finance "lord of the rings trilogy" out of pocket, i'd damn well want to know EXACTLY what's going on with the budget. as far as i'm concerned the catch phrase *should* be "if you can afford it then yes, you need to ask."

question for robbie36 (or anyone who knows): how stable do you see the thai market in the long run? how much impact do you foresee from political turbulence that may or may not happen within the next ten years or so?

All very interesting, I'd like to dabble but will stick to Art and Real Estate for a bit longer.

Well as I pointed out the SET has been a pretty bad investment over the past 15 years.

Still it would have been just as difficult to make money in property - prices in BKK are only just back to their 1991 levels in US dollar terms. You would however have done pretty well if you had bought prime beach side property in Phuket (even better if you had bought raw land).

As for Thai art - now that would have been really tough. I guess Thawan Dachanee works picked up 15 years ago would have done pretty well. And works by Chatchai Puipia even better - but I dont know anyone who did it....

**** Thai art I wouldn't piss on it for an investment.

Nothing can make a fast buck more than art at the moment in the US/UK its gone all 80s again.

managed forestry as an industry outpaced both real estate and the stock market over the 60 years prior to 911... stats kinda get screwy after that.

had a tip on where Taksin's money was going after he cashed out of Shin unfortunately the coup came at a very bad time for those tipped the nod

Man City :lol::lol::lol:

I thought it was all getting rather toppy....

Damien Hirst having to buy his own work and all.

I rather like the idea that some of the better artists from Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand will possibly join some of the other emerging markets such as India, Russia and China.

As I said earlier, the Thai market is inherently 'cheap' and therefore quite 'stable' for an emerging market. What I mean by that is that it is generally the high flying stocks and stock markets that show the very high volatility.

I reckon the riskiest stock I own is Apple. Ok it is a great stock - all its products are selling well but everyone knows that and it sells on a PE of something like 35x earnings. I like the stock, I think it will continue to exceed everyones expectations but it wouldnt take much of a slip - some major virus in its iphone that required a product recall - and the stock would halve overnight.

Stocks in Thailand sell on PEs typically of around 10x earnings (and often as low of 5-6x earnings and a P/BV of 0.5x). People realise the government is crap, the economy is crap and management of most companies are totally hopeless - they simply dont expect much. So on a day when there is no bad news in Thailand, the stocks go up. The SET is the long forgotten world of investment - the stockmarket peaked in January 1994, a long long time ago - it is not a high flying market.

If you want internet boomsville markets you need to go to Vietnam India or China.
