luckyphil247
Lately in Australia , the term "'Binge Drinking" has become the hot topic of conversation . Personally , I think it has been going on for quite some time , and not many people really gave a sh*t . The first I ever heard about the term was in the mid to late 80's. But what has made matters much worse , is that binge drinking has caused an increase in violence in recent times , especially outside nightclubs and bars . What are your thoughts about Binge Drinking ???
beej
I dont think that binge drinking is the cause of the increase in violence. Are you blind as well as ******* dumb??? Stand outside a pub/club at 2am surrounded by people that have been binge drinking and see the violence then stand in the a street full of sober people at 2pm see any difference? the thing that REALLY pissed me off this month was the CEO of Wetherspoons blamed A list stars and sports personalities for Englands drink problem, this is coming from a man who offers more cheap drinks promotions than any other chain of bars in the UK. I'll be honest with you, I've been on Sukhumvit a lot including soi 4 (guess you're talking about sukhumvit) because it is nearest place to enjoy a cold beer and move on to the next place if there is any reason the palce sucks (awfull music selections, groups of people who don't know how to behave, people keep hanging around and wanting you to buy drinks or just hearing scorpions or eagles) if I don't want to sit in a wooden karaoke shack under a highway where half of the people there keep trying to sell you all sorts of drugs. And not once have I witnessed a fight, however, I woke up twice in the past 3 months of fights in front of my apartment between thai guys (thank god not foreigners so I'd have to save my face). Which is ridiculous because what the hell do we have 3 security guys for sitting in that small area 24/7? The violence due to alcohol here is present, no doubt about it but compared to some popular holiday spots back in Europe like Lloret de Mar in Spain it's nothing to worry about, I hope it stays that way, I don't get involved in violence too much, the last time I was forced to defend myself and use my awesome karate/judo & kickboxing superpowers was also in Spain in Mallorca 6 years ago when a group of PSV supporters decided that me and my 4 friends were taking up too many girls on our balcony (they had a point because there were 5 of us and there were about 9 girls and there were none at theirs )so they looked for us and found us when 2 of them had gone home already so it was 10 to 3, we outlasted them also because of the help from guy we met before and the police was there very soon. Alcohol is very much related to violence but it's more about other factors which get triggered by the alcohol.
Stramash
I dont think that binge drinking is the cause of the increase in violence.I personally feeel that the p.c. brigade is behind it. There is no fear of much reprisal with the law these days. Also parents share a blame in not properly installing values such as respect and manners etc to there kids. I am speaking from the viewpoint of living in the uk. But the way you described it is pretty much the same as what it is like here. People are losing sight of old fashioned values i feel. I suppose i could be termed as a binge drinker as I drink rarely but sometimes when i do drink on those rare occastions I get very very drunk indeed. Have to say though in despite of that fact when i do get drunk I do not feel the need to prove my manhood by bashing a guy into the floor who i "reckon I could ave" Ive seen a few fights outside and inside my local bars pubs and nightclubs and 995 of the time the guys and gals who are trying to prove something have the most to prove and can't fight there way out of a wet papper bag unless there friends are there to help them kick the other sigular person onto the ground. booze just lowers inhibition the seeds of foulness already exist inside these types of idiots anyway. some of what u say is true UK but much is not - in the 2005/06 British Crime Survey, it was reported that alcohol was factor in over 44% of all violent incidents!! This equates to 1,029,000 violent incidents where the blame can be fully or wholly placed at alcohols door. It is the acceptable drug yet causes far more deaths and misery than all the illegal drugs put together. Its not so much binge drinking that causes it (the term binge iis very ambiguous in itself and what the uk govt call binge drinking I call a couple of hours on a saturday) but what is to blame is a lack of education on the effects and the damage. If we legalised weed and sold that at bars instead, I would bet everything I have that those crime stats would fall dramatically within a year!!

beej
Go to Ko Phangan on a full moon party and see binge drinking at its best, bring on the fights, rape and abuse. Before the booze fulled parties there was very little violence in any. You CANT defend booze, it kills millions.

babyoiy
I dont drink (atm). A lot of thai women do seem to have a good attitude towards drinking i.e. they don't drink too often. And when they do they hold themselves quite well. I dont know if im in those "a lot of Thai women" you mentioned. I tempolary stopped drinking... it was about a week and a bit and when my MSN display was showing "I'm freezing like it's snowing". A few ppl whom knew that I'm on alcohol-free period thought I have withdrawal symptoms. I was sarcastic as its frigging hot here lately. I wonder why they thought so. waza
When I was younger I was a serial binge drinker, like all my m8's. Speaking from my experience alcohol does give you dutch courage and lowers your inhabitions, increasing the likelyhood of commiting a stupid or violent act. You CANT defend booze, it kills millions. well, yes. you CAN defend booze. just like you can defend smoking, guns, smoking guns or anything else people use to kill themselves slowly with. fair enough to say 'booze doesn't kill people, people kill people' but booze DOES impair judgment (and reflexes, so the most drunkenest at a barfight tends to deservedly get his ass kicked). i suspect however that the problem with full moon parties isn't that people suddenly stopped dropping acid and started swilling lager, but that the parties became large enough to attract a much more diverse crowd, and large enough to be mostly anonymous (so those whose judgment is impaired can feel like they can get away with whatever has entered their 'mind'). that said, drinking, like anything, is not a major problem---drinking TOO MUCH is. Which is ridiculous because what the hell do we have 3 security guys for sitting in that small area 24/7? well one of the few times i've been to Nana (for a TF event actually... one involving cheeseburgers)... there were TWO fights in the course of a couple of hours, and almost a third, as a drunk TF member got jealous of a girl he didn't know well enough to get jealous of... yeah, he was drunk. but if distaste for violence isn't enough to keep you away from Nana, surely the Eagles and Skorpiants can? there are plenty better places to get one's drink on. the little Isaan joint around the corner for example Alcohol is very much related to violence but it's more about other factors which get triggered by the alcohol. to sum up i agree completely with that statement. the impaired judgment brought on by alcohol is more catalyst than cause.
