There's a great French restaurant called 'Indigo' down on Soi convent. It's at the end of a small soi opposite Molly Malone's.

The food is really excellent.

Being British, the downside for me is that it's French owned, and is always full of French people who speak in French, even if they are saying HI to a Japanese bloke.. But of course this would be good for you:)

Just curious, what's the point of being in Thailand if not to meet/talk to Thai people...?

If you want to meet French people, visit a French speaking country, no?

Unless you have no choice to leave there, and are trying to find people of a similar origin/culture than yours.

In any case... Bonne chance!

...The French are worse than the English!!!

...why is it that French people cannot adjust even after decades of colonial tyranny???

....French people ask for steaks in vegetarian restaurants....

....French people decided to call a quarter pounder cheeseburger a "Royale with cheese.."....even thought they killed their last monarchy....

...and now they are not content with being on holiday until they find someone who speaks French......

...someone asked me..."why is it that French people always travel in packs."

.....I said..."because they feel "amore amore" comfortable.....

....someone else asked me "why do French people speak French?"

...I said..."because they can't be bothered to learn any other language."

...chastise you may.........but my favourite word is irony...

si vous pense que je parle comme un vache folle....respondez moi...

..je suis desole prce que ma Francais est tres malle....et je n'aime pas de utiliser le dictionary.....c'est facile...je n'aime pas ca

...or maybe you could learn Thai????????

I don't mean to be rude, but you should learn to speak English, Thai, or Chinese in Thailand to really be able to get around well. (Even most Chinese people here speak English or Thai except the ones on holiday who stay together in huge groups)

The following is just an opinion and not meant to be rude as well:

French is a rapidly dying language and is in its death throes on the world stage. If you want a nice French-speaking vacation, you are better off in many lovely African venues. I do not advise anyone to study French including French people. It is only the French Government which keeps its people at a loss in communicating with with other world citizens by advocating the use of the French Language.

(Studied French 4 years in HS) au revoir

Completely disagree with this one. Although you are both right to say that English is an important language, your comments about French show that you have little knowledge of that language and a rather narrow mind.

French is the language of poets, writers and artists it is a beautiful tongue that has more subtilities and nuances than English will ever have, it is definitely not a dying tongue by any mean.

But that's really beside the point, language is part of one's culture and to suggest that someone abandon it's native tongue or that everyone should speak english is an aberration. Guess what, we are not living in the colonial period anymore and english is far from being a universally accepted tongue.

The smart thing to do, in my opinion, is not to abandon your own tongue, but instead to learn as many additional ones as you can. Not only does it develop your brain, it also shows an oppenness to other people and their culture as well as give you an advantage over them in conversation.

Language is also about communication, not just expression. I dont wish to speak for Condo, but he did suggest, in nice way that the OP should learn to speak any number of languages if he wishes to communicate effectively and get around with ease in Thailand. Afterall, he is here, not in France. With this I fully agree.

Its all very well to say that French is the language of poets and artists etc, and yes, French is a very beautiful and expressive language indeed. But if only French people (or French speakers) can understand it, then thats very limiting isnt it.

Had Condo suggested that everyone should learn English, I wouldnt have agreed. But he didnt say that.

Your last point though is very valid. Language is like a window to the culture.

Which brings us back to the OP. He is a Frenchman, looking for French speaking Thai here in Thailand. Well then, that's going to be limiting for him and his experience here in Thailand, isnt it.

Guess what, we are not living in the colonial period anymore and english is far from being a universally accepted tongue. .

Did I read that right?

communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment, radio, maritime, engineering, diplomacy are just some of the fields practised world-wide where English is the recognised language of communication.

It is the most taught second language anywhere in the world. Some countries even still use English as the preferred language for conducting official business of law and government even though it is not their native tongue and have a different official language.

Right or wrong, English is the language of the world now and it belongs to nobody and it belongs to everybody!

Can the same be said for French?

I think the Chinese, the Arabs as well as the Spanish would dispute that, but British and American sure like to think that way...

I think you will find it's fact..

I understand Chinese has the most Native speakers because of the population but we are not talking about that. As the examples I posted earlier, English IS the most universally accepted medium of communication.

Go to any airport in the world and try and land a plane speaking Spanish or Chinese and see what happens.. I could go on and on with various examples but I think you get the picture.

If you don't like to speak English that's fine, but don't try and distort the truth.

what is indisputable: English is the language of airports and hotels.

I have no issue speaking english and don't have anything in particular against that language. English might be a popular business tongue but it is not a "universal language". If you travel a bit in the developing world, spanish will likely get you farther.

I do have issue with the condescending English tourist attitude who expect everyone in every country to address them in their native tongue. But I'm not saying that you're one of those.

funny thing is, in over 10 years of schooling in art and writing, never once was i expected to speak, write or read any French. shockingly, art can be done in just about any language (and is). no offense intended (which i often say before something offensive) but: claiming *any* one language "the language of poets, writers and artists" is the sort of pretentious, precious foppery only indulged in by wannabes.

The smart thing to do, in my opinion, is not to abandon your own tongue, but instead to learn as many additional ones as you can. Not only does it develop your brain, it also shows an oppenness to other people and their culture as well as give you an advantage over them in conversation.

sensible enough. whether it's mere government oppression or not, one might suspect French would be very useful in France. *i* strongly recommend the french do NOT follow Condotown's suggestion and abandon the French language. unless they, you know, like do it all at exactly the same time...

It's not a universal language ? Are you for real?

Come on, please tell me. You are winding me up aren't you ?

Travel in the developing world? yeah I'm sure everybody in developing Asia addresses everybody as amigo.

So what you're saying now is South America, Where the biggest country on the continent speak Portuguese not Spanish. Admittedly speaking Spanish will help there but so would speaking English if I was in north America. I'm sure speaking English will help me get some dinner in Argentina, a bit more of a struggle if I spoke only Mandarin.

Then we have Africa. Depending on where you go you can come across German, French, Dutch, English, Arabic, Portuguese and all the local tongues. I don't think my knowledge of only English is going to stop me sending an S.O.S ( The internationally recognized distress call which is an acronym of ....wait for it ENGLISH....S.ave.O.ur.S.ouls

Then we have the middle east....Don't know too much about there but when I went to Dubai, I think it may have been Arabic and again wait for it.....English. No French, Spanish or Chinese...I wonder why that is?

I am well travelled, I have been to lots of countries and surprisingly 99% of the time I have been addressed in English, even before they have heard me speak. In Europe,In Asia,The Americas north and south and In Africa...

And it's one of the reasons us Brits don't learn another language, we are not too arrogant, it's just we speak the world's most spoken second language so it has made learning another language fluently not a number one priority!
