MikeFromNY
Just wondering are there a lot of free wifi hot spots in Bangkok or do most places lock them down and make you pay for access? Thanks for the help. -Mike
Chatty
some coffee shops restaurants and bars provide free wi-fi. but still have some place that you have to pay. I have seen Bangkok Metro. advert about Free wifi.
grezzzy_greer
There are LOADs of places with free WiFi - and quite a few with "free for customers" as well. The latter usually is password protected but when you buy a coffee or whatever, the receipt has a password that gets you say 30 mins free. Usually most decent pubs have free wefi - in Silom try The Duke of Wellington, or The Irish Exchange (in Soi Convent), in Sukhumvit try The Londoner on thecorner of Soi 33, or The Bulls Head in 33/1. I think if you have a look around the internet, you will also find listings of free Wifi spots in Bangkok - look for the Stickman site - sorry I dont have the URL, but I am pretty sure there is a listing on his site. I have always found it charming how pubs offer free Wifi. They are not worried about people sitting there hogging bandwith because the attention and focus of the vast majority of people who sit in a pub eventually turns to the cold beer which has a way of monopolizing ones thoughts

PJack
Page 4 in todays Bangkok Post has an advert for "Green Bangkok WiFi". Green has nothing to do with it, thankfully. they say one must get a card with username and password and then can use it through a network of 15,000 hotspots, although one must renew every few months, but this can be done online. for more info call 1555 or 02 900 9000 then press 89 or visit www. truewifi.net or www. bangkok.go.th I have not idea if any of this is 'true' or not. I will explore it but I dont really believe it works or that it wont be overloaded with 3 million people, eventually shrinking the pipe to a trickle at 8 kbs or less. In Thailand people think Wifi means high speed but there really is no such thing as high speed Internet in Thailand.

Chatty
Got more detail... sorry you guys I have no time to summarise Bangkok offers 15,000 free Wi-Fi spots ThaiNewsLand 26.06.2008 07:12 The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has partnered True Corp to offer 500,000 people free wireless internet access, starting Thursday, under its ?Green Bangkok? campaign that will provide 15,000 hotspots to get online. The goals of this campaign are to save energy, reduce expenses, and enhance convenience for online access to knowledge and information anytime and anywhere. True has been chosen to roll out a Wi-Fi network covering more than 400 square kilometres in the Bangkok area. Users will require a special card to access the hotspots. On Tuesday, after the official launch at CentralWorld, the BMA gave away 500,000 free Wi-Fi cards to the public at more than 50 travel centres and leading department stores, including Siam Paragon, Emporium, Central Plaza and Siam Centre, in the run-up to the launch of the service on Thursday. The free service, which is set to last for one year in its initial phase, will offer only slow 64K connections designed mainly for checking email or sending text messages. Those with the free Wi-Fi card can register at the www.truewifi.net website and renew their account every three months. The card is valid until the end of June next year. The scheme is part of the city's drive to cut back on its energy use as officials hope residents will drive less if electronic communication becomes more convenient. "Using information technology for communication with others rather than taking transportation will save energy in crisis period and for the future," Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said in a statement. The new Wi-Fi hotspots are located in 10 major areas, namely Silom; Rama IV; Rachaprarob Road; Rama I; Sukhumvit; New Phetcha-buri; Asoke; Charoenkrung and Rachadamnern Nok; as well as the Lumpini and Benjasiri Parks. Wow. very helpful. WTF does it mean? we gotta call BMA to find out? that is excellent use of technology but maybe it would have been easier to organize the info before putting the advert out where you tell people to call up to find out more. Unless of course you are a telecom company. 2. The BP advert says 3 million users, which suggests quite a few cards. So one would think there will be more cards available. Personally, most free stuff like this in Thailand is a waste of time. It is better to pay 700 Baht a month for unlimited wifi like I do at my building. Feels like it is expensive but at least it is a known quantity. Dealing with Thai BMA and free offers available for 3 million people sounds like trouble, inefficiency, mismanagement, and a big headache.

I prefer to spend 590 baht for ADSL, no need to use wi fi at home for me. Outside I prefer to spend 50 baht for coffee at Coffee Alley, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. If anyone interested in my university provide free Wi Fi no need to order anything to get password.
Niranahm
The free Green Wifi is pathetic -- it is speed limited to 64 kps. EDGE/GPRS is substantially faster than that in Bangkok (999 THB a month unlimited) It's just an attempt to hook people and then sell them usable bandwidth. The marketing materials claim that they are helping Thai society and allowing people to work from home to save petrol/gas costs by telecommuting. What utter BS! If people could work from home more, then a 64 K connection available for free would not change anything. Wouldn't it be great if we had political leaders who decided to roll out high speed bandwidth for all in Bangkok. That would create jobs and investment. But no, it won't happen, because the elites instead are only thinking of how much money they can gouge from the common man for internet fees... Niranahm
Getting back to where to get free wifi. With the exceptions noted (well done Tasty Thai) pubs are a much better bet than coffee shops and restaurants. Most of the nicer farang pubs not only have free wifi at good speeds, but many of them will also allow you to plug in your laptop to the wall and use their electricity. Molly Malone's and Bull's Head are both good for this and I have even been offered an extension cord when I was seated far from a socket. That kind of thing is good service! Niranahm
Agree!!! I prefer to spend 590 baht for ADSL, no need to use wi fi at home for me. If you have an ADSL connection then for a low price you can convert it to home wifi system. That allows many computers simultaneously to use the same connection and you can stream music from computers to wifi connected devices and so on. I use True 4 MB connection at home, and it's really nice to be able to sit by my pool or verandah connected wirelessly with my laptops, cell phone and so on... Same for my friends who come over -- they can use their own laptops and devices to connect rather than me having to let them use my private  devices...
