But delusional is perhaps the person who having been to thailand once and watching TV in Dublin thinks that they have a clearer understanding of the situation in BKK than someone who has lived in the country for 16 years and is currently in situ.

delusional is the person who's missing the elephant that may be in the room, the one that (cannot) be talked about. delusional are the ones who are saying that because they can still shop at emporium, everything's gonna be all right.

BTW, yes obviously you watching the 2nd plane on 9/11 had a better understanding than anyone in NYC or anyone for that matter in the US! Do you really know how silly this sounds?

well, nice appeal to authority (a logical fallacy) but a) i was in New York on 9/11 and B) i'm in Bangkok now and have been for a few years.

Can you pls give more specific info of the reported widespread incidence of thugs scaring people? Where , when etc. This sort of info is important and should be treated with the care it deserves by clearly identifying the areas you are suggesting are being subjected to armed thugs? It could help other members. Otherwise it just seems like some unsubstantiated generalisation.
i haven't seen or heard any such things in Bangkok, some disturbing news
The BKK rumour mill is in overdrive so we should all be very careful in what we post.

that's very true, but having been in new york on 9/11 i assure you that all this crap about 'alarmist rumors' being potentially damaging is comically self-important. alarmism on the TF forum making things worse?

as for we should be "careful what we post"--in regard to the elephant that may be in the room, absolutely. in regard to "oh my God they're killing babies in the airport!!" type rumors--i find the rumors a lot more useful than 'pundits' saying there's some 'danger' is being 'alarmist'.

I think the point was made well by Greer
I ask that everyone think very clearly and carefully before posting outright rubbish here, and before advising others about the supposed "dangers" of coming here...

instead of chastising alarmists on TF forums, why not go back to your true passion of trying to get 'dangerous' TV shows that may 'harm' children censored. when has anything BUT rubbish been posted on the TF forum? SO ******* WHAT.

240,000 tourists stranded in Thailand

Tourism Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said the number of stranded tourists have risen to 240,000.

Weerasak is due to attend a foreign press conference at Bitec Bangna, the second city terminal which is open today for international flight check-in. He said he would do everything to send news to the world that Thailand is doing it best to send stranded travellers home.

The minister added that he would ask for the special financial package worth Bt10 billion to help small and medium-sized operators in the tourism and related industries which have been hard hit by the shutdown ofBangkok airports

ps speaking of 'alarmists' and 9/11, when the first tower was hit, the people in the second tower were told to sit tight. had my cousin's sister in law (who worked there) done so, she'd be dead. instead, she went home straightaway and even made it out of the WTC before the subway closed.

speaking of subways, right after 9/11 there were all sorts of rumors of more bombs etc. i don't feel that i've somehow been cheated by not hanging out in front of the Con Ed plant. it wasn't bombed but i don't feel somehow that i was ripped off by routing my jogging away from there because of the rumors.

point being, if there are rumors of things happening, and we don't know for sure they're false, i'd rather hear about them. i think any of the monkeys on this forum clever enough to type one finger at a time can tell that this forum is basically hearsay.

censoring the rumors because they may be 'damaging' is just stupid. how much ******* damage will they do to thailand's rep as a safe tourist destination compared to seizing airports. sorry, stink tank. the damage is done, and there's a good chance things will get worse.

This is such a generalisation it bears no common sense at all.....invalidating others to justify your narrow mind doesn't work for you....or anybody else...

I am not 'invalidating' anyone and I'll have to plead "not guilty" to the narrow mind accusation.

I'm simply pointing out that the people defending PAD haven't put forth any intellectually compelling argument for why Thai people (or any people for that matter) should support an organization whose stated goal is the disenfranchisement of the majority of the electorate in a democracy.

The only argument I've heard is that "Thaksin is a scumbag" which, while arguable, doesn't really make a good case for eliminating democracy.

Or taking over airports.

even if one accepts lock, stock and barrel that toxin is a scumbag wannabe dictator, it does nothing to convince me that a) Sondhi is less of a scumbag, especially given *his* track record for corruption (don't let's forget that PAD are led by a guy who was formerly one of those toxin cronies they're crusading against--looks more like a lovers' quarrel than a 'crusade for justice' to me) and B) there is any possible justification for seizing the airports.

seizing the airports is an act of agression, not 'civil disobedience,' full stop.

I agree with you.

Perhaps the manner in which you say it is a bit crude.

But sometimes it takes just that. And with 18xxx posts, you are probably more aware of life here than most of these guys.

Not saying the number of posts directly makes you knowledgeable...

However it does show that you are pretty focused on TF.

Anyway the pressure continues for the Govt to step down...

"Air Force Commander-in-Chief ACM Itthaporn Supawong Sunday repeated the military's call for Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to dissolve the House.

He said the call was agreed upon during a meeting of the situation monitoring committee and agreed by heads of government agencies, academics and representatives of the private sector.

The Air Force chief said the government had nothing to fear because it could win the next election again."

The Nation

We have PAD leadership saying the courts will rule against the government (PPP)and the government will be dissolved this week (but yet PAD continues to hold the airport). We have the military telling the government to dissolve itself, but not to worry because they will probably win in the next election.

So where does that leave things. One scenario: The government is dissolved. PAD leaves the airport. There is an election. Thaksin's side wins again.

What does PAD do then?

that's obvious. escalate.

Nah, he is actually a Norweigian living in Greenland He just have lots of time in his hands.

Zeusbheld: You are making good point, bit similar like my Thai friends declined to take me with their car to airport last night. Although nothing happened, I guess they did the right thing and I did not loose out that much.

But Mr Undercover you fail to realise that Khun Suriyasai is talking about PAD people (who are expendable) NOT foreigners as you misleading crapped on about! Please don't clutch at straws by pulling some quote out of context...

oh it's only expendable THAI people who are to be used as human shields! that makes it all alright then.

a) i don't have a non-crude gear to shift into and B) sugarcoating a turd of a situation is irresponsible IMO.

no, but it definitely shows i type faster.

Stranded foreigners can receive free medical treatment

Stranded foreign tourists or businessmen can receive free medical treatment at either state or private hospitals in Thailand, according to the Public Health Ministry.

"We will pay for that," the ministry's secretary general Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot said Monday.

According to him, if the foreign tourists and businessmen fall ill while waiting for a flight back home, they are entitled to free medical treatment.

"We are very concerned about the stranded visitors," Prat said.

What hope the sorting this out by Friday? I'm supposed to fly in on Sunday! :(

Even if the PAD move out tomorrow Serirat confirmed that they will need a week to test all the equipments and system if ready to service. But anyway, good luck.

Jesus...an entire week? I definitely didn't expect it to take more than 2-3 days to test everything. Sucks even more for everyone stranded here or trying to get back in.

this is the single most massive security breach since airports were invented. i think we can wait a week for them to get it sorted. i don't think it's too much to ask.
