Train to Kuala Lumpur? Phnom Penh?

Based on the current situation at the BKK airports, I'm considering trying to get to the Kuala Lumpur or Phnom Penh airport via Train.

Looking for scheduling information, the location of the train station(s) in BKK, and if applicable, transportation to the Kuala Lumpur airport from the closest train station.

why not chiang mai?

If my source is accurate, the only other international airports in Thailand are Chiang Mai and Phuket.

EVA airways doesn't service Chiang Mai or Phucket so I'd have to buy a new plane ticket. On the other hand, if I can get to Phnom Penh, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur, EVA Air will modify my trip to one of these airports instead of BKK-to-Taipei.

Of course, booking a flight from Chiang Mai to Taipei on another airline may work, but there may be some complications as Taipei-to-SF is the second leg of the ticket.

I may be in the clear as EVA is awaiting approval from the Thai governement to fly commercial jets out of Utapao.

On another note, it may seem that a train to Phnom Penh will be a shorter duration. It seems the duration to KL is 14-1/2 hours.

Any information on trains to Phnom Penh?

China Airlines does fly to Taipei direct from Chiang Mai (though I believe not every day)

Like someone else mentioned the trains dont run to Phnom Pehn, but buses do.

If you're really up on trains you could take the train up thru Isaan to Vientianne and then fly from there to PP or Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City (which all seem to be serviced by EVA). But CM to Taipei on China Airlines would probably be cheaper and easier than that route (if they have seats).

there are airasia flights out of PP and Vientianne, but booking one on the next week may be difficult, depends on the number of seats you want. The train to cambo only runs to the border and then you have to go overland to PP. Train to Vientianne (Nong Khai and cross the bridge) or Chiang Mai would be easiest (if can get a seat. Probably can get a seat but maybe not a sleeper). Train south to Malaysia, change trains close to the border ....and go to KL or to Singapore. that is a much longer train trip, but many more flights out of KL and Singapore. I know that there is lots of flooding in the south so check before you book that the train is open all the way. As you know, hard to find anyone who really knows anything positively in thailand. Or wait it out. I think that there will be a settlement by the Kings birthday on the 5th.

Samui and Krabi are Int. airports too, although they have limited connections so it would probably mean buying another ticket - depends how desperate you are. I've flown direct Krabi - HK and Krabi - SG Can't remember which airline - it was expensive.

You could easily bus it out of Bangkok if you can't get a seat/sleeper on a train and if there is increased demand it's easier for bus companies to schedule more buses - it will probably be easier to get a seat on a border/KL bound train the further out of the city you get. You don't even need a sleeper for a train to Nong Khai you can get a ticket for chair car. Overland to Vientiane, PP, KL, CM, Phuket etc is easy even without the train. Easily done - there's lots of option just depends how desperate you are and what lengths you're prepared to go to.

Best of luck :)
