Dr_Mike
Adorned names such as dear, sweetie, honey are just kind tones of friendship. They don't directly express any emotion whatsoever. True love names are always "made up names" and also includes using that person's real name in a heart-full sentence of atonement. The attenuation of the romance accents the feelings through verbal phrases, but as any Thai girl will do that, you cannot rely on passionate words to ensure any "relationshit". it's what you do, not what you say that counts. That being said: it's best NOT to judge your partner by what they say to others. Give their roots a place to grow. Pay close attention to what they do, with you. Otherwise you are kidding only yourself. what do you mean by "relationshit", dear? is that some sort of Fruedian slip? Siegfred never impressed me. Most problems in a relationship end up being part of the relationshit. So I have learned to exclude them from life. I'm happy, should I say we are. Me, Myself and I, amoung others.... Enjoy the silly pet names, nice times, a bit of travel here and there, and of course the mouse, it seems to be around a lot. :-)
English_George
...there are either: sexual, hierachical or condescending connotations.... ...when you call someone other than a partner, or are called, by a pet name.... ....if it's your girlfriend its sexual ..if its your boss its hierarchical ..if its someone who doesn't like you its condescending .....if its not any of the above then slowly walk away quickly ..

scotne1
Yeah I cun understand if someone calles you Honey or Te Rack or something then calls another the same name it is a bit of a deflation to what he called you before. If all my girlfriend did was call me Honey then called another Honey it would piss me off also. Real pet names are unique to that person the Octopus Monkey comment seemed probably original for that couple it really means something. My GF calles me Ba Mook (crazy squid) prob sinciei grope her all the time, and since I did it in the ocean with her for 3 weeks when she started calling me it. If she called another that I might think about ending it asap. If its just Hun or something and she calls others that than so be it I dont really care. petey
I grew up in the Southern part of the USA. So I call everybody darling or dear. It is just a normal term for me with woman I am friends with. And because it is a normal term for me, I rarely ever use those words with my wife. As a matter of fact, if I use the word "dear" with her, it's probably not a good thing!

As a matter of fact, if I use the word "dear" with her, it's probably not a good thing! From what you stated Kirk, It is quite annoying to me when 'a particular person" call me "honey, dear" when his wife is not there.. for ex.. on phone and msn with me...so I am thinking about challenging him to call me those names in front of his wife who is my master friend...Actually I do tell him that I don't like the way he call me that me,, it sounds strange to me. He seems to understand, but keep calling me like that when his wife isn't around.....Poor them or Poor me hahaha! More than that he call his wife "honey" too ohhh!! Exploring
Anyway, I am curious about"my Dear" which level of relationship can a guy call a girl that way? very good friendship perhaps?
Stramash
I think of 'my dear' being very old fashioned and not used as much. And 'dear' by itself (certainly in UK) tends to be things the elderly say to you rather than any sign of a relationship...

Brother call sister? just a very general term, more often used by someone older than you or a relative (often prefixed to a name) 'so, how was school dear?' 'Well my dear, I see the opera is cancelled'
