........then how anal is Iran?

Talk about a backwards country. We all know they are medieval there but to arrest somebody for what they are wearing and how they style their hair is absurd.

Maybe we should do the same in the UK and ban people from wearing full face burqas (i'm in favour of this anyway as i find them threatening) and any other garments of middle eastern origin.

At least 49 people have been arrested during a crackdown on "satanic" clothing in Iran.

Youngsters combine Western and traditional clothes in Iran

Police said five barber shops were also shut and 20 warned for "promoting Western hairstyles".

The measures are the latest in a country-wide campaign against cultural influences from the West in the Islamic Republic, where strict dress codes are enforced.

In the past, such crackdowns have lasted a few weeks or months, but the current campaign was launched in 2007 and is still continuing.

It includes measures against men sporting spiky "Western" hairstyles or women wearing tight trousers and high boots.

The latest arrests took place in the northern city of Qaemshahr.

"Police confronted rascals and thugs who appeared in public wearing satanic fashions and unsuitable clothing," police commander Mahmoud Rahmani said.

Women are supposed to wear clothing that covers their hair and disguises the shape of their bodies.

But some, particularly in cities, wear headscarves pushed back well beyond their hairlines and sport tight-fitting outfits.

The authorities fear such open acts of defiance against Iran's values could escalate if they go unchecked, according to some analysts.

"Some individuals, not knowing what culture they are imitating, put on clothing that was designed by the enemies of this country," Mr Rahmani said.

"The enemies of this country are trying to divert our youth and breed them the way they want and deprive them of a healthy life," he added.

Rahmani did not say how the offenders would be punished. But usual penalties are a warning or a fine.

Previously Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has suggested Iran's enemies may try to stage a "soft" or "velvet" revolution by infiltrating corrupt culture or ideas.

Now I know it's not very PC but I found this comment particularly amusing;

Thinking about it, what they are wearing now is much more environmentally friendly than say...A suicide belt, which okay is fashionable for some Muslims, but kinda clashes with western designer clothes as a must have accessory so much so that it would cause an embarrassing fashion disaster for the wearer, so they would have to bin the bomb. Yep, I feel safer already! Keep on wearing the tight 'I can't hide my bomb in these now can I' jeans....

No, just more puffy than usual (lie off those Haggis burger pies :P ) and you walk like you're carrying loafs of bread under your arm pits.

Being Christian, never thought I'd say this, but this Muslim bashing is really boring.

If I was Muslim I'd be terribly offended, let's not forget that there are some TF Muslim members here.

FMD ( fu*k me dead )

I'm not bashing muslims per se i'm bashing Iran.

it's a bit one dimensional, though, isn't it? i mean clearly the gov't is backward, but overall Iran is pretty diverse, and there is a definite educated, moderate, secularist sector. i know a fair few iranians and most of them have better jobs than you (or I) will ever have. true, they're not in Iran, but they do go back and visit people in Tehran and from the sound of things it's a lot less hillbilly than oh, i dlon't know, Bangkok, or most Cities in the UK, US or Europe. (Australians, however, win the sophistication race because of their special way with sheep).

it's a bit silly to try to gloat over other countries when you come from a country that invented cricket.

Cricket isn't THAT bad. Better than rounders anyway

I do have muslim friends (granted non are Iranian) and although I don't agree with a lot of aspects of Sharia Law I have nothing against their religion apart from the extremists of course (but then every religion has those and i don't agree with them either).

I just find Iran as a country, or rather their Government as you rightly point out, hard to come to terms with.

Having said that though I only base this on what i read about in the media and we all know how twisted that can be.

At least in Australia we have no problems with our sheep going to the beach in a bikini!

Based on all the Iranians I have met and Afghans refs who lived there, Iran seems very sophisicated, diverse and has an incredibily rich cultural heritage of which Iranians are understandably very proud.

Politically, I had understood that there are more reformers and modernists than the elite conservatives seeking to keep their grip on power, (did the reformers not do well at the last municipal elections?).

An Iranian friend of mine owns a travel company and makes a **** load of money from Iranians who come to BKK to dance... apparently it's forbidden to dance and party in Iran.. we're not talking about getting messy and throwing shapes but quite traditional dancing ... he books a place and throws a shin dig for the lot of them.. they do the whole jet skiing at Pattaya etc but just thought the whole dancing thing was a tad bizarre. :?

i know whole bunch of Iranian exiles whose fathers were very much part of the Shah's regime. Ok they don't go back to Tehran-understandably not wanting to be shot on arrival but they lead a heck of a good life in Europe.

As mentioned previously,Iran is very much fragmented between the secular middle/upper classes(whether living abroad or in Tehran) and the more religiously pious peasants .For them Allah is indeed great....but when it comes down to it they don't really have a lot of choice in the matter.
