Deal with Bad Taxi drivers

Question

Have you ever had bad experience with the taxi drivers?

1. Over price fee, I always get that problem cuz they thought I was a chinese tourist. I tried to get taxi in front of MBK once, it was rain storm there... he had no "Namjai" at all... he spoke English to me "200 baht". and same situation happened to me around tourists area, Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam. Makes me think how many tourists deal with that problem, unfair!!

2. They deny to pick us up. It always happened to me after they knew that I wasn't tourist, and my place is too close or too far. Some of them wait for only foreigners. I had experience after I got back from dinner on the river cruise (can't remember) I wanted to get off at Si praya pier. It's some where near a luxury hotel, might be Sheraton. Every taxi denied me. Some drivers didn't look at me at all cuz I spoke Thai with Thai accent. So my Thai baht is worthless. May be.

Once in front of Siam Paragon, I went to see a concert with my friend, it was after midnight, there was raining. Forget sky train, it stop running after midnight. We just wanted to go to our workplace at Soi Nana, it wasn't that far... I couldn't believe no one take us. I remember I smashed a Taxi with something... I lost my tempure. I asked him where did he wanna go and why did he drive on the street if he didn't wanna take any passenger... he didn't answer.

I just got a number from a nice taxi driver, he said he never deny, he go to any place that passengers wanna go. He told me if I have any trouble, don't let them get away cuz they are breaking the laws.

take the plate number, the time that you take taxi or the time that situation occured, call 1584

i don't have fare problems with taxis nor no meter ones, but talkative and bad manner taxis.

one day i took a taxi go to work as i have an important meeting in the morning. once i got in i told a taxi driver about the direction that i had planned which need to take an express way as i was pretty late. he didn't say a word but kept driving on a different direction i had planned esp. without taking an express way.

unfortunately, i was late already once he parked where office building was. i was pissed so i gave him the fare then got off and shut the door a bit lound. as i was about to walk acorss the road heading to the building then i heard he shouted behind me. KUAY!!!!!!

hmm I know it's not Thai forum na ... but please let me ask in Thai...

Reminds me of a couple number of Taxis i went on, thinking about it i wish i had some photos to show....

One taxi's interior was a full on collage of currency notes and coins from EVERYWHERE in the world. Said he collected them sometimes tourists did not have enough Thai money for tips they gave their country's notes.

Another one was like a 7/11 on wheels! i was stunned by the different brands of bubble gums, cooling napkins, snack packs, mints mounted on the interior inside the taxi and there was a little sign wrote the price list, a small basket it said help your self.

and another one was like a disco ball with blinking pink and blue lights and strobe lights inside with blasting loud music on... was not aware of it until i got on. was a total embarassing and laughing at the same time.

They (taxi drivers) *heart* farang indeed.

That sticker is sponsored by DTAC right? Jeeez....

This one??

When I went to Tapas I always walked through soi Convent to Sathorn road to get a Taxi Meter... Luckily I rarely go there.

I really hate to go to Silom, after I stood there for an hour at Soi 4 to find "jai dee" taxi to take me home... I prefer to drive, and after I had problem with dark parking space, I avoid to go to Silom at night.

A short walk to Rama 4 or even just across the road to the south side of Silom esp the corner of soi convent as babyoiy says means you always get a taxi no probs. Don't give up on your Soi 4 night out.

Well Suriwong is ok but the whole streach from the Christian Hosp to Rama 4 is basically not a goer unless you want to be pay 'drop my pants and screw me over many times' prices!

(Of course you could just go to Soi 2 for that....)

The trick....

If they don't want to take you or say a stupid price just push the door shut lightly so it isn't properly closed, this pisses them the f*ck off, especially if its raining.

I can't stand this...I always get it outside of MBK (Thais as well).

If I get pissed off, I just don't shut the door and walk back to the next taxi. I haven't been hit with a steel pole yet.

Funnily enough I do exactly the same thing. I just jump in the taxi (never ask) and tell them where I am going. If he says no - I always ask why- seemingly because of greed I just smile, jump out and leave the door open and walk to another taxi.

Really does piss them off. And yes, I do always keep an eye out for something out of the boot as I am walking away but it has never happened (yet).

Imagine sitting behind the wheel for 10-12 hours in Bangkok traffic jam and hot sunny weather.

No wonder many of them go mental.

No wonder so many of them smell so bad.

The ones I catch to work on a morning generally smell of whisky...

You know what, i think these taxis might be as well getting off from pissing at people, consider how boring their job is .

when around a shopping mall, i really prefer to stand in line for the taxi. i think it's really so much better than trying to hail my own especially in a very crowded area like mbk, paragon and chidlom it's usually a long line though, but the transition is fast enough anyway. worth the wait than having to deal with taxi drivers particularly because i don't speak thai and usually have trouble explaining where i live. lol.

I've seen a friend piss in a taxi... But can't say I've ever had a taxi driver in BKK pissing at me...

Nothing worse than being caught in a golden shower when there are no taxis about (since the drivers are all out their cabs causing the shower...)

I think Thai drivers are IDEAL for your "Clubbin Taxi" company... They're incredible multi-taskers while driving. I've personally seen a Thai on a motorcycle who was driving with a cigarette in one hand and a mobile phone in the other... And then picking his nose with the cigarette hand while sitting at a traffic light.

I paid abit over 500 from Suk11 to the Airport last time ... The meter was on and my mum speaks perfectly Thai. I know it usually around 300 only and there must be something wrong with the meter but I was too tired to deal with it and we were kinda late for the flight ...

After I told this story to a few good Taxi drivers I've met. They mostly offer me a discount which I never take as it wasn't their fault ... It's shame really for just a few bad apples to ruin it all for the good one ...

I have no idea why but the last three taxi rides and I tuk-tuk ride I took, I got money back on what I owed them on the meter/arrangement, all in about 10 days out of 5 rides.

It never happened to me before but I like it. The money makes its way back to people anyway as you end up tipping a bit more at a restaurant or when you see somebody in dire need. After all, there's good in generosity. Both for yourself as for the others.

I feel that it's a direct effect of the financial crisis in knowing that good luck will return as a result and maybe that's just how it should be.

Is it true that the yellow/green/blue taxis are people from Bangkok and surrounding provinces and the Red/pink ones are usually Khun Isaan?
wherever theyre from, i dont care. But im getting to the point lately where i avoid the pink/red taxis. The majority of them ive encountered dont want to go anywhere i wish to go and seem to just want to scam the tourist areas. Ok. Now i just wave them on and get a yellow/green one.

i try to take a boat as much as i can, the main Chao river.

but the side cannals, sometimes i dont take those minni toilet boats as much cause the smell of the those small green/black watered canals makes me gag

Taxis? I love taking them at night, i usually catch the wired up super hyper broken english speaking weirdos and it makes the ride pretty enjoyable and fun.

I dont take taxis in die hard traffic hours, i try to avoid them in the daytime.

The only taxis i dislike, are the ones that beg to take you to spicey or ping pong shows or cow boy all the time.

awwwww there so cute

The ones that piss me off?

the ones at the AIRPORT

its like i wanna put a helmet on and ram thru em or just stick a bunch of dirty smelly socks in there mouth. Jam em in there deep so they cant speak. that way its quiet. Fresh off a plane and in those long lines..... the last thing u wanna hear after a 6 hour flight is MISTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHAAAAR YOUUUUUU GOOOOOOO????? OK I TAK YOUUUUUUUUUUU 900 BAHHHTTTT

there is a sort of system to the colors. i used to know it but cant remember it now. I think it was blue taxis are individual owned. green/yellow ones are mostly from one company and the others are a mixture of all options.

usually there are so many of them I choose the newer ones. I am 189 cm and 86 kg so the size of the seats and the shocks mean something to me. selecting new cars makes a big difference.

All the diff colours represent a different company or Co-operative. I think there are 2 Co-operatives but I will check with a list I saw from a few years ago on a website. I don't believe there are any individually owned taxis but not sure on this. The drivers get pretty screwed by the companies which is why they try to screw us to make a few baht more.

Always choose a newer taxi, you'll find the Pink company are rolling out a newer fleet of Toyotas at the moment.

Why anyone would choose an old taxi given the choice on the street is beyond me. Sit in the back of a rickety old taxi which has had buddha knows how many sweaty bums and god knows knows what else going on inside over the years? No thanks! More chance of a breakdown and bad aircon as well. :x
