"KODINJI, India, Aug X (Reuters Life!) ? Walk around Kodinji village and you'll think that you have double vision.

The village is home to as many as 230 sets of twins. Nobody knows why there are so many twins in the village of 15,000 people, although one local doctor suspects it might be due to the water.

In fact with about 35-45 twins per live birth, this village in North Kerala, India, has four times more twins than normal. Not surprisingly, the village has been dubbed "the twin village."

The latest official estimates by the Kodinji's Twins and Kins Association (TAKA), which conducted door-to-door surveys at the start of the year, found that there were 204 sets of twins.

Based on births since the survey was conducted, there are probably now around 230 sets of twins in the village, locals said. That number is set to rise as there are five women pregnant with twins.

"It's an amazing phenomenon to see a medical marvel occurring in such a localized place where the people are not exposed to any kinds of harmful drugs or harmful chemicals. It's a virgin village," said Dr Sribiju, a researcher.

Pathummakutty and Kunhipathutty, 65, are the oldest surviving twins in the village. The youngest are Rifa Ayesha and Ritha Ayesha, born on June 10. Their proud parents already see a slight difference between them as one lies fast asleep, while the other kicks away with a mischievous grin on her face.

Being a twin is not always easy. Pathummakutty, who like many in the village have a single name, recalls how her family struggled financially when she was a child. But she also remember good times such as laughter after yet another mix up with her twin sister.

It is not uncommon to run into an identical twin while walking down the hilly roads of Kodinji and there are many tales of teachers getting mixed up between twin students.

At the local school, 15-year-old Salmabi said teachers often confused her for her twin sister and she was once reprimanded for something that her twin did.

"It happens all the time," the students pipe in a chorus.

Scientists are still trying to uncover the mystery of why there are so many twins in the village.

"Based on scientific facts, we feel something in the environment is causing this. It could be something in the water," said a local doctor, M.K. Sribiju.

"All the world over the cause of twins is mainly because of drugs. Everywhere in the Western world, people are exposed to fertility drugs, their food habits, they consume more dairy products. Everywhere the age of marriage is increasing. There are late marriages predisposed to occurrence of twins," he said.

However in Kodinji, most marriages are between people aged 18 to 20 years old.

"All the factors leading to the occurrence of twinning world wide, we cannot see it here. There is something unknown that is causing this phenomenon," he said.

The locals also believe it is to do with the water. Kodinji is surrounded by water in the fields and during the monsoon season it becomes inaccessible from heavy rains.

As scientists try to find the reason for the large numbers of twins in the village, the parents are busy trying to tell their children apart. It doesn't help that many of the twins have similar names and often wear similar clothes.

While parents light-heartedly point out that their twins even seem to fall sick together, not all traits are shared. Identical twins Anu and Abhi prefer different film stars and one of the boys likes to play cricket, while the other prefers kicking a soccer ball.

With all the attention being showered on the twins of Kodinji, Ajmer, a 12-year-old school boy, feels like the odd one out in a village where being a twin is trendy."

Another american & camel lover in Afghanistan is also likely to be equally emotional about this cull....

Rudd panned for one lousy camel cullPeter Mitchell, Los Angeles August 6, 2009 .

A POPULAR news anchor on American financial channel CNBC has launched a stinging attack on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd following his Government?s decision to spend $19 million to cull feral camels in the outback. ??There is a serial killer in Australia and we are going to put a picture up so we can see who it is,?? a stern-faced Erin Burnett said on CNBC on Tuesday.

A large photo of Mr Rudd was then shown. ??That would be the Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd,?? Burnett said. ??Do you know what he is doing? He has launched air strikes ? air strikes ? against camels in the outback.??

Burnett broke away from her usual analysis of stock movements on Wall Street to vent about the camel cull. She raised the issue during a segment with CNBC?s colourful financial guru, Jim Cramer. Burnett said there were a million camels living wild in Australia and the animals would be shot. ??They are slaughtering them??? Cramer, looking shocked, asked Burnett. ??They are slaughtering them,?? Burnett replied.

She also complained that the meat and milk from the camels would be wasted. ??Apparently there is $1 billion of meat out there,?? Burnett said. ??Are they going to do anything with it??? Cramer asked, and was told, ??No, they?re just slaughtering them.?? ??That?s genocide. Camelcide,?? Cramer commented.

Burnett then told Cramer she hoped Australians would see her segment. ??I hope they have this on in the morning in Australia.?? As the discussion came to a close, the photo of Mr Rudd re-appeared on the screen.??There he is,?? Burnett said. ??That is the man who approved it.??

Burnett is a former anchor with Bloomberg TV and a vice-president at financial company Citigroup. She has a loyal male following in the US and is a favourite of US men?s magazine Maxim, for which she posed for a risque photo shoot in 2007. She also made Maxim?s top 10 ??Hottest News Anchor?? list.

W*nk tells fu**ing to get a grip. Metro

Fed-up residents of the Austrian town of F**king are being offered a helping hand by their German neighbours in a town named Wa*k.

The people of F**king have grown tired of English-speaking tourists acting out their village's name (and also, no doubt, of amused British journalists writing stories about it.)

But now residents of the German town of W**k have told them grasp the opportunity.

Juergen Stoll, who runs the W**k guest house, said: 'The people in F**king should cash in on their fame.

'I have so many visitors here at the W**k guest house that we have the mattresses all in a line in one big room for people to sleep on. Otherwise we couldn't fit everybody in.

'If the name helps to bring the tourists in, then why not cash in on it? In these credit crunch times every little helps,' he added.

In summer visitors can take hikes up the 1,780 metre W**k Mountain, or, if they prefer, take it easy in the four seater W**k cable car that goes all the way to the peak.

There are numerous opportunities to enjoy paragliding at W**k, and in winter it's possible to go skiing on the W**k piste.

The first live-action Scooby-Doo film makes several joking references to Shaggy and Scooby's purported drug use, allegations primarily stemming from Shaggy's beatnik/hippie origins. The film even has Shaggy fall in love with a girl named "Mary Jane" (a common slang term for marijuana) and an early scene of smoke coming out of a vent in the roof of the van late at night, (but then showing steam pour from their breakfast in the morning). Similarly, an episode of the Adult Swim cartoon Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law finds Shaggy and Scooby-Doo arrested for alleged possession of marijuana

Panda Porn (nothing to do with Mrs Butterworth  )

A panda cub born in Thailand after years of artificial insemination and efforts to get its celibate parents to mate has been named in a competition, a government official said Monday.

The female cub has been called "Linping" -- which means "forest of ice" in Chinese -- the name voted for by 60 percent of 22 million people who sent in postcard entries to the contest.

The cub was born in May when eight-year-old giant panda Lin Hui surprised workers at Chiang Mai zoo by giving birth, just three months after receiving semen from nine-year-old partner Chuang Chuang.

The cub's new moniker is a mixture of the first half of her mother's name with the name of the main river in Chiang Mai, said Suvit Khunkitti, minister of natural resources and environment.

"It is a very appropriate name because it has a good meaning, both in Thai and in Chinese," said Suvit.

The panda pair had shown no interest in reproducing the traditional way since they both arrived on a 10-year loan from China in 2003. The cub will officially belong to China but will stay with Thailand on a two-year loan.

In 2006, Chuang Chuang, who had been deemed too heavy to mate with Lin Hui, lost weight on a low-carbohydrate diet and was then shown 15-minute video clips of successful panda couplings, but to no avail.

Lin Hui was first artificially inseminated in April 2007 but failed to become pregnant.

The zoo tried a different approach in January, when a cold snap in the northern city prompted an unusually frisky response from Lin Hui, but again without any luck.

Giant pandas, notorious for their low sex drive, are among the planet's most endangered animals. Nearly 1,600 pandas are believed to survive in the wild in China and about 180 are being raised in captivity in zoos worldwide.

Mexican Cartels smuggle oil into the US -WTF? - AP news

MEXICO CITY ? U.S. refineries bought millions of dollars worth of oil stolen from Mexican government pipelines and smuggled across the border, the U.S. Justice Department told The Associated Press ? illegal operations now led by Mexican drug cartels expanding their reach.

Criminals ? mostly drug gangs ? tap remote pipelines, sometimes building pipelines of their own, to siphon off hundreds of millions of dollars worth of oil each year, the Mexican oil monopoly said. At least one U.S. oil executive has pleaded guilty to conspiracy in such a deal.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Homeland Security department is scheduled to return $2.4 million to Mexico's tax administration, the first batch of money seized during a binational investigation into smuggled oil that authorities expect to lead to more arrests and seizures.

"The United States is working with the Mexican government on the theft of oil," said Nancy Herrera, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Houston. "It's an ongoing investigation, with one indictment so far."

In that case, Donald Schroeder, president of Houston-based Trammo Petroleum, is scheduled to be sentenced in December after pleading guilty in May.

In a $2 million scheme, Herrera said, Schroeder purchased stolen Mexican oil that had been brought across the border in trucks and barges and sold it to various U.S. refineries, which she did not identify. Trammo's tiny firm profited about $150,000 in the scheme, she said.

Schroeder's attorneys said in an e-mail that neither they nor their client would respond to AP's requests for comment.

Bill Holbrook, spokesman for the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, said a single indictment against a small company should not be used to smear the reputation of the entire U.S. oil industry, "and is not indicative of how domestic refiners operate."

But in Mexico, federal police commissioner Rodrigo Esparza said the Zetas, a fierce drug gang aligned with the Gulf cartel, used false import documents to smuggle at least $46 million worth of oil in tankers to unnamed U.S. refineries.

Mexico froze 149 bank accounts this year in connection with that crime, which continues at a record rate, according to Mexico's state oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex.

In a surprising public acknowledgment, Mexican President Felipe Calderon said last week that drug cartels have extended their operations into the theft of oil, Mexico's leading source of foreign income which finances about 40 percent of the national budget.

"These are Mexican resources, and we do not have to sit back or turn a blind eye," Calderon said. "This is our national heritage and we must defend it."

Highly sophisticated thieves using Pemex equipment "are basically working day and night, seeing how they can penetrate our infrastructure," said Pemex spokesman Carlos Ramirez. The thieves, operating in remote parts of the country, have even built tunnels and their own pipelines to siphon off the product, he said.

How much of the stolen oil is crossing into the U.S., and how much of the theft is at the hands of cartels? So far, nobody knows.

"These questions are really the center point of all of this," Ramirez said.

He said cartels in northern Mexico are responsible for most of the theft, though he said there may well be internal operatives at Pemex stealing as well. Last week, police raided Pemex offices looking for insider misconduct.

Trammo, the sole company named in court records so far, is dwarfed by any refiner most people have heard of. It sells some 2.1 million barrels a year.

Major refiners such as San Antonio-based Valero Energy can produce more than that in a single day, buying crude from tankers or pipelines, and none has been implicated in buying stolen oil.

"It is Exxon Mobil's policy to always obey relevant laws, rules and regulations everywhere we operate," said spokesman Kevin Allexon. Shell Oil Co. said it abides by all laws.

Various kinds of petroleum products, including gasoline, are being stolen and sold to gas stations and factories in Mexico, said Ramirez, adding that service stations in at least two states have been shut down recently for selling stolen gas.

The thefts are a devastating blow to Pemex, which saw production fall 7.5 percent in the first half of the year.

So far this year, Pemex is aware of 190 different thefts, almost half in the Gulf state of Veracruz. Ramirez said Pemex is using hidden cameras, extra guards and additional investigators to catch the thieves, but the problem is still spreading: So far this year, oil theft is up 10 percent, and have been confirmed in 19 states, up from 13 in 2008.

And oil theft experts say that just like drugs, the crimes will be tough to stop as long as there's money to be made.

"U.S. refineries willing to buy stolen crude don't care where it comes from. Once the product is at their doorstep, the deal is done, and they can pay pennies on the dollar without taking the risk of getting it across the border," said Kent Chrisman, director for global security with Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy.

Chrisman, a former Secret Service agent, recently teamed up with Texas law enforcement agents to bust a ring of thieves in that state.

Oil theft in general is a relatively new problem, Chrisman said, "but we've seen a big spike in recent years because oil prices went up. Every year it seems to get worse and worse. It's a profitable business.

Hunt on for 'hijacked cargo ship'

A search is under way for a cargo ship which may have travelled through the English Channel after apparently being hijacked by pirates.

Coastguards fear the Maltese-flagged Arctic Sea, carrying 15 Russian crew, was hijacked in the Baltic sea.

UK authorities made contact before it entered the Strait of Dover but the Russian navy told the Itar-Tass agency it was now looking for the ship.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the situation was "bizarre".

Spokesman Mark Clark said: "Who would think that a hijacked ship could pass through one of the most policed and concentrated waters in the world?

"It seems strange to think that a ship which had been hijacked was passing along the channel along with ships carrying day-trippers going over to Calais for the day."

'Extremely curious'

Hijackers may have been coercing the ship's crew when they made radio contact with coastguards at Dover on 28 July, the MCA fears.

Reports say Swedish authorities were told by the Finnish shipping line operating the 3,988-tonne cargo ship that it was boarded by up to 10 armed men claiming to be anti-drugs police as it sailed through the Baltic sea on July 24.

The intruders apparently left the vessel - which was carrying about £1m worth of sawn timber from Finland to Algeria - 12 hours later on an inflatable boat after damaging the Arctic Sea's communications equipment.

But on 3 August, Interpol told Dover Coastguard that the crew had been hijacked in the Baltic Sea and asked UK authorities to be alert as the vessel passed through the channel.

By then the ship had already left the Strait of Dover and was last recorded off the coast of Brest, northern France, just before 0130 BST on 30 July.

The MCA said it was told the vessel had seemingly been spotted subsequently by a Portuguese coastal patrol aircraft but its current location was unknown.

Mr Clark said the person on board whom coastguards had spoken to had told them the ship was due to arrive in Bejaia, northern Algeria, on 4 August at 2300 BST.

He added: "There is no coastguard I know who can remember anything like this happening.

"There didn't seem anything suspicious when contact was made. It could well be that a crew member had a gun put to his head by a hijacker when contact was made, but who knows?

"We are extremely curious to find out what could have happened to this vessel."

'No different'

World leaders have become increasingly concerned about pirates operating off the coast of Somalia.

But Nick Davis, who runs the private security firm Anti-Piracy Maritime Security Solutions, told the BBC's Today programme that the relatively low value of the cargo suggested this was a different kind of piracy to that seen off the coast of East Africa.

Instead, he suggested, it was more likely that the apparent seizure was the result of a "commercial dispute" in which one party had decided to "take matters into their own hands".

He added: "Piracy is piracy - if someone's wanting to take that vessel, and they're not authorised, and they use a speedboat to go and get it, then it's no different to what the Somalis do.

"However, I don't believe they would have boarded that vessel firing weapons in the air, and threatening to kill the crew.

"Whilst it is piracy, it's not like what we know in Somalia."

Russian authorities have said they have been assessing the situation and Navy vessels have been notified, according to Itar-Tass.

Vladimir Kochurov, deputy head of the Arkhangelsk regional administration's transport department, told the agency that there was "scarce information" about the Arctic Sea.

He added: "Security services are holding the investigation.

"Meanwhile, the regional administration is ready for rapid reaction in case the situation clarifies. We will give assistance to the crew."

Poor kid! A real WTF.

US mum gets 99 years for mutilating son Tue Aug 18 2009

A US jury has sentenced Katherine Nadal to 99 years in prison for cutting off her son's genitals.

A jury has sentenced a Texas mother convicted of mutilating her infant by cutting off his genitals to 99 years in prison. Jurors deliberated for about two hours on Monday before sentencing 28-year-old Katherine Nadal. They chose among possible sentences ranging from probation to life in prison. The same jury had convicted her last week of first-degree felony injury to a child.

Prosecutors asked for life in prison. Nadal's attorneys did not request any specific sentence but had asked the jury to not punish her out of hate or revenge. Nadal had claimed the family dog, a 2.7-3.2kg dachshund named "Shorty," was responsible for mutilating her then-five-week-old son, Holden Gothia, as she slept next to him.

But prosecutors told jurors the mother was high on drugs when she mutilated Holden with an unknown sharp instrument in their suburban Houston apartment in March 2007. The jury also determined she used a deadly weapon in committing the crime although no weapon was ever recovered by authorities.

Before deciding the sentence, the jury of seven women and five men heard from Dr. Edmond Gonzales, a pediatric urologist at Baylor College of Medicine. Gonzales testified that Holden faces multiple and costly reconstructive surgeries that have no guarantee of success and will likely need lifelong counseling. Doctors who examined Holden testified during the weeklong trial it was not possible for the dog to have caused the injuries.

Prosecutor Tammy Thomas said Nadal and Holden's father, Camden Gothia, got into an argument the night before the attack because Nadal was high on cocaine.

Authorities say Nadal, who has a history of drug abuse and has had prior drug arrests, tested positive for cocaine, methadone and Xanax after the attack. "Nobody wants to believe a mother did this to her child. Nobody does. We wish it was not true but it is true," Thomas said. Holden, who lost half the blood in his body, survived the attack, but the severed body parts were never found.

Nadal's defense attorneys, meanwhile, told jurors prosecutors had no direct proof their client mutilated her son. Prosecutor Denise Oncken told jurors no DNA evidence or weapon was found because Nadal cleaned the crime scene before authorities arrived.

Holden, now two, lives with his paternal aunt and her husband, who were given custody after his parents relinquished their rights. His father sees him regularly.

Airports of Thailand Plc is calling on state security agencies to draw up new measures to deal with problems at Suvarnabhumi airport including baggage theft and alleged extortion of tourists.

AoT president Serirat Prasutanond said the agencies were expected to come up with their proposals and submit them to AoT executives on Thursday.

Mr Serirat yesterday met representatives from the police, customs and King Power, the operator of the duty-free complex at the airport, to discuss the problems dogging Suvarnabhumi.

The meeting came on the heels of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's visit to the airport on Saturday to gather information first-hand on the troubles plaguing the airport.

Foreign media outlets have reported in recent weeks on a number of foreign travellers being accused of shoplifting at the airport and held by police until they paid a bribe to secure their freedom.

The airport is under the jurisdiction of Rachathewa police station.

It was also reported tourists claimed to have been fined for breaking customs regulations for possessing more than one carton of cigarettes or one bottle of liquor.

Mr Serirat said the proposed new guidelines would be forwarded to the Transport Ministry and the prime minister for approval.

Mr Serirat said signs would probably be put up telling tourists when they are leaving the duty-free area and warning them to pay up for all items before leaving to avoid being arrested for shoplifting.

He said a police office on the third floor would be renovated and equipped with the tools needed to facilitate police work so suspects would not have to leave the airport.

Niran Thiranartsin, the airport director, said passengers were regularly fined for possessing more than the permitted amount of cigarettes and alcohol.

In most cases, the cigarettes and alcohol were not purchased at the airport.

Fines could be imposed if passengers were found in possession of more than the permitted amount.

Mr Niran said customs and revenue authorities would have to come up with better regulations to deal with such cases.

Pratheep Vijitho, the airport's deputy director for operations, said the two contracted operators handling passenger luggage at the airport would be required to employ better measures to prevent luggage thefts.

The two are Thai Airways International and Bangkok Flight Services Co.

More security cameras will be installed in the sorting area.

He said the measures were expected to take effect on Sept 1.

What ******* planet are these idiots on? Instead of addressing the extortion problem, they just make it easier and more convenient for it to continue.

And more cameras in the sorting area to prevent baggage pilfering? How's that gonna do any good if the whole ******* crew is in on the thieving?

Looks as though the "laughing stock" reputation is about to be replaced by a more deserved "crazy like a fox" label.

LoL you do not hear F words flying around from Rob, ever! :P

Try this

A WIFE is pregnant with TWELVE babies, it was claimed last night.

The unnamed mum-to-be - a teacher - is said to be defying medical advice by vowing to give birth to ALL six girls and six boys.

If she succeeds, her brood - conceived after fertility treatment - will smash the world record for multiple births.

The tots' father, identified only as Marwan, is backing her. He beamed: "In the beginning we thought that my wife would give birth to twins.

"But more foetuses were discovered. Our joy increased with the growing number."

He said his wife was determined to have a natural birth - but doctors had told her it was IMPOSSIBLE.

British fertility experts warned the pregnancy in the Tunisian oasis town of Gafsa carried "colossal" risks. All nine babies born to the current record-holder - an Australian mum in 1971 - died in Sydney.

Shocked Dr Mark Hamilton, of the British Fertility Society, said: "Twelve babies seems extraordinary." The mum-to-be, who is being constantly monitored by experts in her home country, is said to have insisted she is "feeling fine".

She was also "looking forward to hugging her six boys and six girls". The wife had sought help after previously suffering the anguish of several miscarriages.

It was not clear if she had IVF treatment or an alternative procedure called ovulation induction treatment.

IVF would have meant several eggs being fertilised outside the womb then implanted. OIT uses hormones to stimulate the ovaries so they produce eggs that can be fertilised the natural way.

When multiple eggs are involved, UK women opting for either procedure are offered the option of "selective reduction".

The Tunisian government is said to have pledged to do all it can to care for the mother and her babies.

Her pregnancy comes seven months after Californian mum Nadya Suleman stunned the world by delivering eight healthy tots.

Some of the foetuses are aborted, so those left have a better chance of survival.

This also reduces the risk to the mother.
