SweetieBabie
Is foreigner speaking fluent Thai, ...attractive... ? Whether it is a rumor, perception or prejudice. Since when has learning Thai as a second (3rd or 4th) language become a negative thing. Discuss.

I do ok with Thai. and I can telll you it is only a problem with lower educated people who have something to hide. Since I dont associate with these kind of people (anymore for the most part) it is a non-issue. If I hung out in bars with bar girls it would. Having said that, educated people tend to speak English (obviously). In a professional sense I never speak Thai unless I am 100% positive it is the only way to communicate with a professional person (client or contact). They always speak English and prefer to do so. Speaking Thai to most educated Thais insults them. Personally I think this is hubris but I am not about to raise the issue.

Crustyjuggler
To anyone but a scammer, it's a positive thing. However, scammers come in all varieties not just whores and low educated as PJ noted.

English_Bob
- My staff love it when I speak Thai. They laugh when I **** up. - They like it that I can read (and write a little bit) - I never found speaking Thai to be a problem for Thais until I moved down to Phuket... not ONE waitress, bartender, tout or policeman has made a positive comment about me speaking Thai... in BKK it happened all the time. Phuket (Patong) people seem farang-jaded.
