Was China right to execute drug smuggling Briton?

A British man, thought to be mentally ill, has been executed in China for drug smuggling. Should China have shown clemency?

Akmal Shaikh was condemned to death for smuggling 4kgs of heroin into China - a charge he denied.

He was executed on Tuesday morning despite a string of appeals from the British government and his relatives, who had claimed Mr Shaikh suffered from bipolar disorder and was unwittingly lured into the crime.Full news http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8433704.stm

i heard the headline but do not know the facts of the case

what would have been his fate in Thailand?

drug laws are sever in many parts of the world

more so than violent acts between people--- seems odd ---doesn't it

to be fair, bi polar is not really a condition that would excuse his actions. He WAS on medication ergo his condition is manageable and would not really provide the sort of excuse some mental health conditions might.

every time i travel to taiwan or china. There are posts everywhere that death is the max penalty for drug dealer. It is good to know it doesnt go beyond that. Also everyone that been convicted is crazy...

Well, ALL countries MUST respect the laws of other countries.

Historically, an American (in Singapore) drew grafitti in many buildings (inclusive of the American School), and, scratched many cars. He was arrested and sentenced to prison and caning. America tried to flex their muscles demanding that Singapore released the offender. Singapore went ahead to cane and imprison that offender. Now the offender is BUTT-WISER.

Anyway, CHina is getting big, buying over American Companies (IBM) and European (Volvo). The West has to wake up from their dreams that they are supreme.

I understand that people debate about the death penalty.

Some people say capital punishment is no better than murder.

China is a sort of famous about disregard for human rights.

But about this case, I can't complain too much.

Bi polar is not an excuse to avoid the death penalty.

Maybe...he could be commute death sentences to life imprisonment

if he was in other country, but that would be very tough and hard for him

and won't survive in the prison.

What I think, it is annoying about China is that..

"IF" the guy is really cocobanana in his head..

It must be that he was used by some ppl..

So, I dont think that it is fair for him in that case..

And of course I can understand that every country has their own laws..

But I wouldnt say that I respect all of that laws.. or think that is ok..

Last month the Chinese guy was put in the prison another 20 more years after he spoke too open about how the gov. rules the country..

And.. all about the environment that China performs so good..

But still ppl just pretend like it is raining

and do the trade and bla bla with China just because it is cheap.

I personalöly think that.. China is getting better and better... *sigh*

China has executed high up polititians in the last few years for corruption, a heroin smuggler, whether set up, or not, had no chance.

Singapore executed that Australian for the same crime, and circumstances.

Thailand usually shoots them as they're trying to cross the border from Myanmar.

To understand why the world is avoiding China, do some research on:

The Russian China confrontation (there were 2 major incidents)

The first atomic bomb test in the Gobi Desert

The Vietnam war

Then, we will understand what is happening. Sorry, I am not a politician, and, will not elaborate on these matters. Having done your search (hopefully correct), you would begin to be enlightened.

Next, no one knows how many planes and ships China possess. They sheltered theirequipment in hollowed mountains. There may be more than 1 destroyer with the same name!

The Tiananmen affair in 1991 baffled all nations. The world understands there is too much secrecy.

Thank you for your reading pleasure

everyone knows the risks of trying to smuggle drugs into other countries. its sad that the courier is the one executed. should be the one sending the drugs in, but usually they are the ones with the money, so they would just buy their way out of the trouble.
