go to the Thai DMV - near JJ market and take passport, rental agreement, some cash, and copies of everything, an IPOD, your laptop, a handful of patience, and a Thai friend to make the Thai staff feel comfortable talking to someone. I cant remember but they probably want old drivers license too. When I did it I did not have any drivers license to show them.

Go around 8 am and be prepared to finish around 4 pm.

Check in and give paperwork.

Wait.

See an insipidly boring video on how to drive. Pay attention. There will be a test later.

Read the booklet and memorize all info.

Take the visual / stupidity test.

Then take the written test which is actually not that easy. Multiple choice... it is designed to trick you up. I failed the first time and went out to eat lunch and took it again in afternoon. I passed.

Go to the next building for driving test. Bring a car with you.

Sit through another stupid video in Thai. pay attention.

Wait with a few hundred other people in noisy room and hear your name to go out and start your engine.

Get in the queue.

Do parallel park.

Then do pull forward and stop not less than 8 inches from the curb.

These details were all in the video which is in Thai so you should have been paying attention.

Do a few more tricks with the car.

Get your new license.

@pjack --- TY SIR - I will do my best! Great directions. I'm from nyc and I drove a stretch limo for a year. I can park/drive anything as long as it has wheels and an engine. ;)

@fontok --- have you seen Ukrainian women over 35? Is it really worth it? I rather bribe them.

I forgot to add that I failed the driving test. Not because I cant drive or perform what they asked but because the guy said "go up there and stop at that woman". So I did that. And it was not within 12 inches of the curb. They failed me.

I drove to kaosarn road and paid 1000 and got the International Drivers License and actually used it to rent a car in NY a few months later. I use it for ID now too.

An international driving license isn't easy, you have to have a full license in your own country and at least three others (I qualified in UK, Singapore, USA, France and Germany). You then apply to your "home" licensing authority for an international license, enclosing photocopies of the licenses you hold in other countries. After about three weeks your international license should be issued.

In the USA, NYC, you get your international drivers license from the AAA, American Automobile Association. I think it still only costs $10 (bring 2 passport size photos), and it's good for one year. All you need is a current license from your state. And it is very easy to get. I haven't renewed mine in 2 years, but before that I had one for 7 years, just renew it every year.

You should be able to get an international drivers license from your Embassy I think. If you have an international one then you can also easily obtain a Thai drivers license based upon that one so you have one as a backup. Generally the thai drivers licenses are smaller, easier to carry and will also get you the local price at many tourist spots. BTW. I have my IDL for 5 years from Europe so you might go for the longer one if available. My Thai drivers license is about 5 and a half years.

Hope this helps ;-)
