Money VS. Happiness

Yeah - people like to say stuff like that... but it's rubbish.

ALL poor rice farmers want to be rich. All of them. All of them. They don't want to listen to hippy platitudes about how the simple life is best and money doesn't make you happy.

They want big aircon houses, they want cars and mobile phones and education for their kids. They want decent healthcare and a comfortable retirement.

They want a decent life expectancy!

That kind of 'poor happy farmer enjoying his simple life' is just bullshit.

And if anyone TRULY believed that, why are they still posting on here? Why aren't they cashing out and heading on up to Isaan to grow rice? Simple - they don't believe it... it's just more righteous guff to promote their I'm-so-sensitive-to-Thai-culture image.

Ok, EB

If you won the lottery for 10 millions THB..

You think you will find the girl in your dream who will fullfill your life with the real happiness?

If you have 10 millions I bet you are a rich man..

but im not really sure that you are a happy man..

Look inside and ask yourself .. what is happiness.. what does it really mean..

yes, what is happiness?

I'm happy when I've got a new pair of shoes, real brandname thingy and that happiness last approx 15 minutes or until I find those shoes are very uncomfortable to walk in. Than I'm looking for a new pair to make me happy again. Never ending story....

For some people, their happiness depends on materials. I can't say that I'm not one of them. Don't we all love to have a fat bank account, a big house, a nice car, or even better a yacht.

Oh FFS!!! What in God's name makes you think a girl is the key to happiness?

I've been rich and I've been poor.

And let me tell you rich is better.

Lots better. Unimaginably better!

I can do exciting interesting things. I can travel. Eat tasty, healthy food.

What is happiness?

Freedom.

Freedom to work or not to work.

Freedom to travel.

Freedom to experience.

Freedom to study.

Poor people don't have those choices.

If you really believe what you're posting, why do you work? Why don't you try being poor and see how happy you REALLY are?

(BTW 10 Million thb isn't my idea of rich. Rich is 10-20 million in REAL money like US dollars, GB pounds or Euros)

As you said "Poor people don't have those choices. "

This is nohting to do with rich or poor now..

This has to do with "Enough or Not"

If you feel like you've never have enough..

Another 10 or 20 millions (EURO USdollars whatever) wouldnt be enough anyway..

If money can buy happiness as you mentioned.

Why my stinkin rich aunt sits home and suffered coz her daughter doesnt love her?

Why my friend who just sold the land for 15 millions is crying coz her dad just pass away?

If you really mean what you wrote..

You are such a sad, lonely guy , EB..

Let's see how being rich can improve that...

1) Read a good book - well how about having the latest books delivered to my penthouse apartment? I like reading them in my Egyptian linen bedsheets or sitting on my huge balcony, sipping an Italian blend coffee.

2) A delicious cake - hmmm let's see... a French pastry chef at my beck and call to deliver exactly the cakes I like. I think I'll call him 'Henri'.

3) Go to the park? I think I'll lay by my pool... or maybe in one of my landscaped gardens. (that's technically free, since all my properties are paid for)

4) Movie? Yeah... in those huge plush seats at the back. Maybe even have a private screening in the cinema, renting it out for me and my friends so we don't have to listen to other people's phone conversations.

5) Dinner? I like Aberdeen Angus fillet steak. I like salmon and handmade tiramisu... And I like it in beautiful restaurants with silver cutlery, linen napkins, candles and 5 star service. Oh and I like having a chauffeur to drive me and my date home, so I can enjoy a few drinks.

6) Using internet - well I guess I'd have an Apple super computer to find my nice girl... but at least I'd be able to buy her some great presents and go on exotic holidays... (maybe buy her a cinema ticket to make her happy)

7) Talk to a lost friend? **** it... I'll fly over and see them. Take them out for a big meal and get some real face to face time. After all, I don't have to work in the morning.

8. A new dress? Well, I like Armani suits... and I can't buy 'em for 800 baht. So I guess I like having the choice between buying Armani or MBK. But today, I don't want my chauffeur... think I'll drive the Audi TT. Oh and you like massage? Then I'll get a two hands massage in Ratchada with a couple of Penthouse pets. ("Happy Ending, sir?" "No thanks - I'm afraid I'm too rich.")

9) Yoga? Well, it's not my cup of tea... so... I'd probably have a personal fitness trainer and dietician to make sure I'm eating well and staying in shape. (Just in case, I'll have my physician come round and give me a check-up).

You can be happy without money... but having it sure makes things better.

Hmmm - when did you get the authority to change the thread's meaning?

This thread started with the question, "Can money buy you happiness? If so, how much does it cost?"

And I maintain that life with $20 million is happier than life without it.

You Aunt's daughter doesn't love her? Why? Because she's rich? Do you think she would love her if she were poor?

Do you think your friend whose Dad just died would feel better if she were poor with a dead father?

Neither of those examples proves anything, because poor people would feel exactly the same in those circumstances.

Incidentally, with my $20 million, I'd pay off my sisters' mortgages, buy them a couple of nice cars.

I'd make sure my Mum and Dad's retirements were comfortable. I'd ensure they were able to live their lives to the fullest and experience everything they wanted to experience.

I know my Mum loves travelling, so I'd take her around the world to all the places she wanted to visit.

I'd buy my Dad his own pool table and some decent equipment... maybe even get him some lessons so he can improve. He likes living in Thailand, but worries about the cost of keeping the aircon on all day... well that wouldn't be a problem anymore, cos I'd pay his bills for him.

And my ex gf from England is stressed and needs a holiday - so I'd pay for her and her daughter to go somewhere nice.

Wow... look at that! Money made me happy.... and giving it away made OTHER people happy!

I hear you mama.

I remember a wise woman, Noo dee (Vanisa) she said,

Each and everyone of us creates our own imaginary box, called a "box of happiness". Now my happiness box might be bigger than yours. Because that's how i want it to be. Therefore, it's harder and take longer for me for the box to be filled and may be it will never be filled. My supposedly a happiness box becomes an unhappiness box. At the same time, yours is compact, easy to fill and when you have more than you need, so you can share your happiness with others too.

EB - You made your point...

As OP is..

"Can money buy you happiness? If so, how much does it cost? "

My answer will be..

No, money cannot buy me happiness..

-The End-

Not The End...

Have you ever been very rich?

Then how can you answer that question and be sure you're right?

You might find that money gives you the chance to do all the things you love.... but more often.... and in nicer places.

EB, I don't know if you are sad and lonely as sobeshit stated but I agree 100% with your views.

It isn't until one has **** ALL that one can understand just how well money can destroy a lot of unhappiness and give the choice to do all that stuff you stated and then when one gets loaded.... SHEEEEET me! Life gets good again.

This thread reminds me of a Red Dwarf episode (an English Comedy) in which Lister had gone back in time, invented some tension sheets and made billions of millions, learnt to fly, married the hottest woman in history, bought a fleet of amazing cars, biggest house in history with a life statue of himself urinating champers in to a huge fountain and generally was able to choose what things to surround himself with and therefore be happy.

Rimmer (his sort of friend) missed him so he went to get him back. But because it was a time machine Lister didn't remember Rimmer and told him to bollocks.

Rimmer, realising he needed a cracking reason for Lister to give up such wealth and return to **** all, stated words to the effect of....:

"I stand here today and I ask myself who is the rich/happy man. Is it you with your super model, fleet of collector cars, private jets, billions of pounds, castle and servants (the list went on). Or is it me with............ with............. with.......emmm, well, what I've got"

Rimmer paused, thought about what he just said then said "It's you isn't it. Yes. Much richer and much happier. I didn't really think that one trough"

He then slumps off realising what a silly thing he said.

I think sobeshit's friend is crying because her dad died. Not because of 15000000! Your Aunt is choosing to not address the unhappiness in her life. Both have the option to do things the average poor person can't do in order to get over such terrible situations (both of which I feel for).

When your one's father passes on and one doesn't have enough to even pay for a decent funeral.... Sucks even more.

It is possible that that lack of love the Auntie is experiencing is non-money related. If she lived in a slum and felt adandoned in the same way, I can almost be certain it would suck even more.

Money allowed SBI to travel, study, learn languages and (hopefully) pick up some common sense.

Do you think you would hold the same views if you were knee-deep in chicken **** for 12 hours a day 29 days a month? Or how about humping men 3 times your age and weight for $40 bucks or so a time (not including your day off freebies). And then having to support a family miles away.

'Well I am covered in **** but at least I am happy. Money wouldn't give me the choice to change this.'

'Well I am covered in 68 year old spunk, but at least I am happy. Money wouldn't give me the choice to change this.'

Wait till you have **** all, then you will know.

there are 2 kind of happiness

real happiness and illusion of happiness

real happiness is require a lot of hard work within one self

illusion of happiness needs a lot of hard work also, to get the money to buy what ever that they think it will make them happy! but this kind of happiness they have to work endlessly

and most people are still lost in their illusion of happiness...

I know of a few millionaires that "swim" in here. ;)

Being rich doesn't mean HiSo in the Thai sense (at least to westerners). There are plenty of rich people that wear old tshirts, drink beer, and fart like normal people.

No need to show it off.

huh, give me a clue, which ones? :P

Just want to make a point that not having much money can be happier than less one. It's up to ourself. Money is what we use not it use us. We can use it for our basic need and some entertaining. Don't u agree that it's doesn't matter what u eat but it's more dilicious when u eat with someone u love most?

Good nite, Rob. Sorry to be cruel to EB, i just have a crush on him :P

Firstly, use the private messages for your carnal urges.

Secondly......... It would take some ******* amazing company and love to make Khow pak kai from a street stall in Khlong Toey taste as good as a top steak with a really fresh salad, a fantastic red wine.

So no I don't think I can agree fully with "Don't u agree that it's doesn't matter what u eat but it's more dilicious when u eat with someone u love most?"

Surely you know what she means...

I picture some sad old fart eating his steak with wine hating life...then picture a happy couple flinging shrimp at eachother on a street corner.
