Falling the miserable failure of the albums of the decades thread, thought would make it a little simpler.

So, who, for you, is the greatest chanteuse?

Feel free to post youtube links to illustrate.

Here are 3 to start you off;

the incomparable Billie Holiday

the wonderful Annie Lennox

and the quirky Paloma Faith

Sandy Denny is right up there for me. She sadly died young (30ish or something) but she made loads of albums and influenced many other artists.

I'm not that familiar with much of her stuff but what I have heard I've loved. her voice is just amazing. A lot of people know her from singing on Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin but she performed with Fairport Convention her own band Fotheringay, the Strawbs too I think and she did her solo stuff. Probably tons more too.

I like Minnie Ripperton too. I liked her lyrics, they were really sexy without being explicit or vulgar. Not sure how much of them she wrote herself.

A more recent discovery is Salyu, a Japanese singer. Lovely voice.

There's quite a few others too but I don't feel like having the absolute piss ripped out of me at the moment. :)

Always a problem when trying to choose favourites Dave, but 3 damn good choices there.

why end of thread?

When were you elected Galactic Overlord?

While Janis most definitely has an amazing voice, I don't think your post signals the end of the debate at all. Plenty voices better than hers (imo) out there, both in the past (Billie Holiday) and in the present (Paloma Faith)
