Riding in Bangkok!!!

Question

I'm sure some of you know that I have this:

07022008102.jpg

But, I almost exclusively use one of these:

Yamaha+Mio+ZR+new+scooter+high+price.png

(Exactly like this one. Reg A Quarter to 7 if you see me let on.)

To get to work and back and around the city. To be honest, it makes getting about a breeze. Running and maintenance costs are pennies and a small fraction of what a big bike costs.

Apart from the near death experiences, I love riding around Bangkok.

Anyone else riding around Bangkok?

Anecdotes?

I really want a scooter in bkk but i'm ashamed to say i have never ridden a motorcycle of any kind in my life

Anyone wanna show me the basics?

Sure... let me know when. I've been riding here for 6 years and never had a 'real' accident.

Plus there's a perfect place for learning right near my apartment - The Tobacco Monopoly - quiet, private roads.

you're on mate!

when ??

post an event... so we have a time and place... also a shirt color. :D we should have the farang biker gang LOL

How about we all meet up one Sunday around 12 somewhere Sukhumvit area with a destination?

Take it easy getting there. Stop off somewhere to grab a bite to eat then go to play pool, basketball, football or whatever for an hour or so and make our way back to Sukhumvit?

Next couple of Sundays aren't free for me so how about either the 2nd or 9th of next month to give si6 and Bkk_Me a chance to either buy or borrow a bike?

If anyone can think of a good destination to go to good, or I'll ask the lads at work for somewhere maybe an hour away.

If it's ok maybe do it once every couple of months or so?

I am all in for that. let me at least buy a scooter first...quick...need some advice on a hot scooter...don't know sh*t about scooters...

just until I can find the GSXR I want.

That would be a lot of fun.

Before you find the bike you want, I'd recommend something along the lines of a Yamaha Mio or Nouvo or Honda Click (point and go) etc. Or, if you want manual gears, look at a Honda Wave or similar. CBR150s are around 40-45000 used?

You could pick up something like those scooters in good condition maybe 3 or 4 years ald for not much more than 20,000. Maintenance is pennies and you'd probably lose next to nothing on it if you sold it a year or two down the line.

Loads of shops selling used scooters.

'Point and go' sounds right up my street. Besides i don't have a beard, flaming skull head or anything with studs to wear. Basically something which allows me to keep my eyes on the road and not the bike.

I was bumped from behind on the back of a motorcycle taxi the other week, enough to leave me in the fetal position on the bonnet of a white camry but not a scratch... so i do have a slight phobia to bikes, well at least the cars that don't see them..!

(edited with extreme prejudice)

Sounds like a fun weekend...

My Thai biker buddy says we should go to Nakon Nayok. There's a dam, and reservoir with rafting and swimming. It's about an hour away... maybe take a picnic (and some girls?).

Sounds like a plan then.

Meet up on Sukhumvit, car park of Larry's Dive, at say 11am? Sunday 9th? Go to Nakon Nayok Dam with some food and a friend?

Si6, Bkk_Me and Ciaran can you arrange to buy, beg, borrow or steal a bike by then?

And anyone else who fancies it?

Get an automatic, twist and go - piece of piss.

My Dad was a lifelong bike hater. But in Pai, he had no choice... learnt how to ride in 10 minutes in a car park and never looked back.

If you aren't sure, catch up with me and Si tomorrow morning.

I would go along with PiAnt on the Honda Click. Small, light, auto, and very simple to operate.

I don't know about BKK, but in Samui, you just have to watch out for the potholes, and the sand and grit lying on the roads, as it makes them slippery. Not forgetting the Thai driving skills.

It pays to drive defensively!

I just belled them and they reckon there's a Suzuki showroom next to Paolo Hospital (near Soi Ari?), which they reckon will be open on Monday. They don't have a number though.

Or try asking your local motorbike taxi riders if there are any other places not too far from you.

Awesome...thanks for calling.

I'll check around there tomorrow after I catch the F1 race tomorrow in town. That would be really convenient if it's in Ari...close to my Bank.
