It's not exactly acceptable in our society for a lot of things which get keyboard warriored here

I guess what gets me is how people here attack others as a way of justifying thier own actions of the same. Atleast stickman people admit what they do, even pattaya addicts are more honest in that respect (not that i am suggesting we follow that example)

But there is a difference between not wanting to talk about it and looking down one's nose at others. You keep claiming that TF is a bunch of secret whoremongers who blast anyone who admits to being with a hooker. I don't see it.

And Stickman readers and Pattaya addicts are not necessarily honest. Why do you think Stickman took it so seriously when his real name was outed? Behind an aliases it's easy to give intimate details of your life since nobody will be able to connect the online and offline personas.

@EB: Actually, off the top of my head I can think of at least 3 other TF members who do or have run bars where, for a fee, you can take the staff out. I'm sure if I gave it some more thought I could add another 2 or 3 people to that list.

And if you think about potential customers list becomes like an Ethiopian erection, just keeps growing although it may lack solidity

he's been claiming TF is a bunch of secret whoremongers since day one. while certainly there are some on TF, i don't think whoremongers per se have been blasted lock stock and barrel--the ones who have tended to get drawn and quartered have been the dipshits who sign up and immediately start posting as if every male on Earth is a whoremonger and every Thai woman has a price on her head. i'd imagine that sort of behavior is annoying to a fair few whoremongers as well.

also, as a few have suggested already, not wanting to be portrayed publicly as a whoremonger (whether because you ain't, or because you have some old-fashioned notion that your private life should actually be private) is NOT the same as scorning whoremongers.

110 percent agree that the Doc's claim that Stickman readers are being 'honest' is horseshit. bragging anonymously about whoring's just another form of keyboard warriorism (one of the lowest forms even, right up there with "Letters to Penthouse").

that said, i agree with him fully that there's a long history of looking down on English teachers on this site. as an English teacher, i'd have to say that the practice isn't entirely unjustified, however....

In response to the OP i agree he totally over reacted.

But i'm going to open a business back in Euroland selling really good stuff that families will all enjoy and have the best day of the year with, but whenever a family of little nosed people with yellow skin come in im going to quadruple the price, and when little yellow kids starts crying at having his day ruined and his father kicks off about it calling me all the names under the sun at least i know you agree with my stance, and we should kick the little nosed fool out of Euroland for arguing me and insulting me in my own country.

I've heard this of teachers but on the few occasions i'm not reading about Thai culture and visit those naughty areas i rarely meet EFL teachers, i'd have thought Nana, Soi Cowboy would be out of their price range to visit frequently or do they stick to Washington sq.?

I think that Khao San is the teacher's meeting place. Cheap drinks and showering beforehand is optional.

I read Stickman Bangkok's guide to living in Bangkok before I moved over earlier in the year.

I found it exceptionally helpful. It was about 100k words and is by far the best guide I found on living in Thailand.

I didn't get too much into the other parts of the site and the user emails etc, and I found that he started to have a jaded perspective on Thailand. That's actually why I asked Bill on his blog if his perspective on Thailand has changed.

Overall though, I think it's a great resource for those that need a solid overview before moving to BKK.

But god damn, change the design/font already. I had to copy and paste into Word before I had a seizure.

The real people to be looked down on are the high rollers, they cam afford the whorey life people brand teachers with having. If you only earn 50 or 60 grand a month, you cant afford that life style.

The good clubs and bars ain't getting cheaper, not the shity holes, i mean places to dance and ****, plus the taxi and the hassle of it being a market, I am bias. I hate it.

And after you learn all of the basic scams then his weekly article can be a bit repetitive. I'm like you, I learned a looooooot from Stickman but once I spent a deal of time here I started to form my own opinions. Some were in line with Stickman and some were not.

The fact that he focuses on the bargirl and go-go world means that he's not going to be 100% on things outside of that world. I still like reading his weekly articles but at the same time I think he plays to his crowd of sexpats and sex tourists.

You can still get value out of his weekly articles but if you've been here for awhile you sort of know where he crosses the line in sensationalizing things. For instance, he's been talking for 2 or 3 years about people getting pulled over taxicabs and being searched. It's never happened once to me and I hang out in many of the areas that he claims are prime farang stopping areas. I don't even know anybody who has except one guy who wears dreadlocks and looks like a backpacker.

It's not that he's a liar but I think he has an audience that is not representative of all expats.

Stickman weekly is only a small part of the site - there are the photography sections, travel reports, interviews and all the thousands of readers' stories. Now consider how much you pay for all that... right - nothing, nada, zip. You get what you pay for, and in this respect he is great value for money!!!

People being searched by police? It has happened to 3 friends of mine this year alone - the last one about 3 months ago... try taking a taxi up Asoke and turning left onto Sukhumvit - that's the location... just near the police box.

According to Stickman it's every vehicle with a farang that goes up soi 22. Since I play pool on soi 22, 2 nights a week and Ked plays darts there 2 nights a week that means we're there at least 4 nights a week and I have yet to be pulled over . . . once.

Who should I believe? Stickman's readers or me?

Bill, I thought he had mentioned soi 23 and only after midnight?

I know for a fact that the police hang out on Suk soi21/1 between soi 23 and Asoke, stopping taxis with farang most Fri & Sat nights after midnight.

If your farang, heading home from Glow or Narz in a taxi around 2-4am and going down soi21/1 to Asoke from soi 23, you have a good chance of being pulled over and being searched. There is also a carpark on the right side where they undertake their search of people.

I have had police pull me over 2 times in the last few months at this spot and some friends have been as well. I have never exited the taxi nor complied with their request for a search. However, on other nights I have passed and witnessed others being pulled out of their taxi. It is an annoying hassle for people. Narz regulars now avoid that soi.

100 Baht should be the government maximum, the prices are ridiculous in lots of places now. I went to some brand new rip off bar in Ekkamai called PinT, but the T is like an upside down L, so you know you're going to get ripped off as they had to pay some runt millions of baht for such creativity.

Anyway it was happy hour so i went in for a solitary pinL, and for 1 bleedin drink at 4PM it cost 193 Baht, happy hour my ass, well maybe for the thieving owner.

To save being mugged for a beer i recommend avoiding all bars with upside down letters, they're for pretentious c***s.

My beers are 95 baht a bottle... I also add 10% service charge, which gets shared between all the staff.

The pricing decision for most bars is based on numerous factors..

1) Rent

2) Staffing costs

3) Return of initial investment (usually within 2-3 years)

4) Desired client base.

Ekamai is pretty expensive for rent.

If it's a big, well located place, rent is likely to be expensive.

If it has an expensive design, it costs more to sit inside.

And finally, if you are a pretentious *****, you don't want to hang around with back-packers, whoremongers, bargirls or any other cheapskate motherfucker who can find 100 baht to sit in your nice expensive bar.

In the above case, the owner has weeded out the undesirables - TF members who won't pay 193 baht - in favour of wealthy Thais who will.

Personally I will pay up to 300 baht for a beer.... IF (and it's a huge 'IF') there is something else attracting me... incredible view, extra service, naked supermodels, world class DJ, ultra-luxurious surroundings.

IF something costs 30 (ish) baht from 7/11 i'm not inclined to pay more than 100 baht for it in a bar .... if it's in a nightclub or upmarket restaurant i'll expect to pay more !!!

the thing i can't figure out is all those bars on soi 33 charging 150 baht for a bottle of beer .... just because they call their bars after some dead f**king painter and have their hookers in dresses !!! who f**king drinks there !!

I'll go 200 normally, thinking about it, isn't that nearly 4 f*cking quid?

Yes... but all of this is just market forces at work.

I don't mind paying a lot for a good experience.... My issue is paying a lot for a lousy service or shitty location.

I pay 150 baht in Angelwitch, see a good show and have a chat with Dave. I'll buy a lady drink for about the same and have a cute girl rub my thigh for 20 minutes (at least she thinks it's my thigh).

But there are bars I've been in, where the prices are the same and there's a bunch of ropey old Mums, shuffling about on stage.

I won't drink in Soi 33 for the same reasons Ciaran mentioned.

I remember someone once told me he met a couple of girls working down there who used to work at Eden Club... LMAO... 200 baht a drink, 1000 baht bar fine, 3000 baht short time... Or you could have had the pair of them together 3 weeks earlier for 3000!

Not that I'm in favor of expensive drinks but 10 years ago I remember posh beach bars in Santa Monica charging $8 for a beer and $12 for mixed drinks. Ten years ago!

I've been in places in London where I've paid similar prices.

Everyone has their choice whether or not to go to some expensive nightclub or cruise the happy hour specials. But I don't see the logic in going to a place that you know is going to be expensive and then complaining that they're expensive.

If you don't like expensive drinking . . . stay off of Ekkamai. Pretty simple.

And I do practice what I preach. I seldom go to Ekkamai to drink.

At a certain point though, I do think it's ridiculous. 300 or 400 baht for a beer is just silly. If you need to cover your entertainment expenses, charge a cover charge. I would rather pay a 600 baht cover and have reasonably priced drinks than no cover and 400 baht beers.

But this is the problem with F and B... EVERYONE thinks their idea is the best. I wouldn't pay a cover charge... It dissuades me from entering - I can go to Nest free of charge or Qbar and pay a door fee.

I only go to Qbar if I'm on the guest list.

Everyone thinks the bar/restaurant should operate to THEIR specifications. The salsa at Charley Brown's is made fresh every day. We get almost no complaints about it. But last night someone complained... "I like it really spicy. You should make it really spicy." Am I going to change it? No way. As soon as I change it, I will get a half a dozen people saying, "It's too ******* spicy." If the salsa isn't spicy enough... send it back and ask for it to be made spicier! Don't expect the restaurant to change the recipe to suit YOUR taste preference.

Same thing for prices... if you don't like it / can't afford it / object to profiteering - go somewhere else. It's not like the prices are a secret... they're written on the menu.

Bed Supperclub is a prime example... It's expensive at Bed Supperclub. No question. And the guests are rich. One follows the other.

It beggars belief that someone who doesn't like rich people or expensive drinks would go to Bed and ***** about the place. I love it there. But if they have a drum and bass night, I won't go... It's not meant for me.

If you want to see how people have a sense of entitlement or how unreasonable they are, log onto a restaurant review site like Tripadvisor.com. Even places that everyone loves, get lousy reviews sometimes. And often they are so petty - "I didn't like the colour of the lampshades... they clashed with my eyeshadow."

I had a guest complain that I didn't talk to her table on a busy night. I usually talk to everyone. But this particular case I saw a couple having a deep discussion, maybe a few tears and a bit of crying. So I made a decision to give them privacy - she was annoyed that her table had been omitted.

Dealing with the public can be a nightmare or the best job in the world.

(Is that a proportional response?)

I suspect that she was upset as she probably wanted you to invite her upstairs to play naked twister!

Like I said, or as they taught us in Econ 101, utility value is in the eye of the beholder. I get pissed off when they raise the price of stamps 3 cents because I already feel like I'm overpaying (especially in the internet age) but have no problem paying $1000 for a toy I want.

You're never going to make anyone happy but the one thing that I have noticed is that clubs that totally rat f*ck you on the drinks don't tend to have a long shelf life. Hip tends to be fleeting. Once the crowds move onto the newest hip club you're done. That's why they try to get their money back so quickly by charging through the nose for everything.

I'm from LA. I would say that in LA a "hot" nightclub has a total lifespan of about 2 years. After that they have to set up location in a new spot with new investors and a new grand opening (complete with major celebs) to get the suckers in the door for the next year or two so they can make their money back.

It's not that I necessarily object to overpriced drinks, it's that I find them so, meh, to other overpriced clubs I've been to before. Really?!@?! There's a Channel 3 actress here tonight?!?!?! OMG!!!!! Sorry, even back at home that wouldn't bring customers in the door.
