But that's not necessarily a good thing considering that it ranks 47 out of 58 nations surveyed.

Thailand's education performance ranking has remained unchanged this year, at 47th of 58 nations, according to the Geneva-based International Institute for Management Development.

Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat said yesterday the nation's education performance was higher than only Indonesia, the Philippines and India when compared with countries in Asia and the Pacific.

In terms of the education quality, based mainly on the proportion of teachers to students, Thailand's primary education level was ranked 41st with 17.7 students per teacher.

At high school level, Thailand came 53rd with a teacher to student ratio of one to 21, Mr Chinnaworn said.

Thailand came 47th in terms of education opportunities and the proportion of students enrolled at high school for full-time study. About 92% of Thai students graduating from primary schools were enrolled in a full-time study programme at high-school level.

Thailand was ranked 44th in the illiteracy category, with 7.4% of the adult population unable to read or write.

The country was ranked 52nd in terms of internet use, with only 209 people per 1,000 reportedly using it in their daily life.

Thailand was ranked 30th when it came to assessing how well the education system served the needs of the business sector.

The rate of knowledge sharing and exchange between universities and the business sector was also assessed, with Thailand ranked 34th.

One of the most important areas assessed in the rankings was investment in the education system.

Thailand last year invested about 4.2% of its gross domestic product in the education system and was ranked 35th.

Singapore, by comparison, invested only 3.1% of its GDP in educational development. However, Singapore was ranked 13th - or 34 levels above Thailand - when it came to overall education performance.

The Office of the Education Council said it would carry out further analysis on the IMD report, which appeared to correspond with the ministry's own assessments of the country's education performance in several ways, Mr Chinnaworn said.

The IMD findings would also be taken into account when drafting a new educational development plan.

You can blame this on corruption. Soooo much money goes into Thai education when compared with other countries, but look what comes out in the end.

Even access to pencils and paper is something that government schools have to fight for. Where is all the money going??

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he?

Because that's what UDD told him to say. And I'm sure he went away and checked his facts before stating it.

As I recall, Thaksin wanted to give a computer to every student in the country...

Turned out that the computers came from a company he had shares in and would have to use HIS internet company and would even be sent to schools with no electricity....

I think he is aware of the fact the Thaksin uses his power to pocket the money into his own account, but 'money flow' in the yellow government would be equally corrupt just flowing different channels, so in the end he is interested in an improvement of the current situation and whoever decides to improve that situation.

Another example he brought up was the illegal underground lottery, which Thaksin wanted to bring onto the table as a possible soure to collect tax but the yellows but it back under the table.

Thaksin gave the north and northeastern more recognition than they had been receiving. A lot of governments have seen those regions, especially Isaan, as a *cough cough* dark region that they want to stay away from.

Thaksin saw this as an opportunity to help himself while actually giving the people a bit more "hope" than they had before. Whether or not he is more or less crooked than the average PM here is open for debate. It's a debate that I don't like getting into because people feel too strongly one way or the other without considering both sides.

If someone can't say one good thing about Abhisit OR Thaksin, they are usually open for an argument rather than a debate.

There is just as much corruption now as when Thaksin was in. Last week was not

Suthep rated the most corrupt person in Thailand? As far as many people in the present government. They are the equal of George Bush and **** Cheney.

But could that be in part because Thaksin isn't IN the country? LOL

I can say nice things about both. I think they both have tried to do good for Thailand regardless of their motivations.

As EB said, Thaksin wanted to put a computer in every school because he was going to make money off of it and then force them to use internet service by another company that he makes money from . . . but to the people getting the computers that's better than no computers at all.

Was Thaksin corrupt? Yep. No doubt about it. But he channeled his corruption in such a way that he got amazingly rich while still seeming like he was accomplishing something (in the minds of the voters).

Not that I think that's the answer but you can see the dilemma that someone like Abhisit faces. Corruption wins you votes because people get a payday but eventually the music will stop and those without a chair to sit in will be the 50 million or so people who were willing to sit back and take the crumbs that fell off the plate of those robbing the country blind.

As one Isaan woman was quoted putting it ever so in perspective, "All politicians are corrupted, but at least Thaksin did something for us!"

I heard this off the now-defunct podcast, Notes From Thailand. It's still on the podcast directory but the guy who set it up is no longer churning out new series. Sad.

You throw any amount of money to fix any given thing here and somebody siphons it off for personal or family gain. Money in Thailand will never get to where it's supposed to go, period!

From the events i've witnessed in the last 4 years of living in Thailand i can only conclude there is absolutely no hope.. Let them do it, there is no point in us bothering to debate it. Any forum topic on Thai government, law and order and education is meaningless and yet year after year we still talk about it like it can be fixed.

Waste of ******* time..

Seem like Thailand will be "developing country" forever and ever.

The truth hurts.
