This sounds kind of familiar...

The owner of an Indian clothing store said Wednesday that he would only change its name from "Hitler" if he was compensated for re-branding costs, amid a growing row over the new shop.

The outlet, which sells Western men's wear, opened 10 days ago in Ahmedabad city in the western state of Gujarat with "Hitler" written in big letters over the front and with a Nazi swastika as the dot on the "i".

"I will change it (the name) if people want to compensate me for the money we have spent -- the logo, the hoarding, the business cards, the brand," Rajesh Shah told AFP.

He put the total costs at about 150,000 rupees ($2,700).

Shah insisted that until the store opened he did not know who Adolf Hitler was and that Hitler was a nickname given to the grandfather of his store partner because "he was very strict".

"I didn't know how much the name would disturb people," he told AFP by telephone from Ahmedabad. "It was only when the store opened I learnt Hitler had killed six million people."

Members of the tiny Jewish community in Ahmedabad condemned the store's name, while a senior Israeli diplomat said the embassy would raise the matter "in the strongest possible way."

"People use such names mostly out of ignorance," Israel's Mumbai Consul General Orna Sagiv told AFP.

Esther David, a prominent Indian writer in Ahmedabad who is Jewish, said she was "disturbed and distressed" by the shop, but added that some Indians used the word "Hitler" casually to describe autocratic people.

David said Jewish residents had sought to change Shah's mind about the store's name and told him about the Holocaust.

The row evoked memories of a controversy six years ago when a Mumbai restaurant owner called his cafe "Hitler's Cross" and put a swastika on the hoarding, claiming Hitler was a "catchy" name.

The restaurant owner eventually agreed to change the name after protests by the Israeli embassy, Germany and the US Anti-Defamation League.

Hitler attracts an unusual degree of respect in some parts of India, with his book "Mein Kampf" a popular title in bookshops and on street stalls.

Gujarat schoolbooks issued by the Hindu nationalist state government were criticised a few years ago for praising Hitler as someone who gave "dignity and prestige" to the German government.

Caged tigers found on Thai apartment block roof

Bangkok, Sept 10, 2012 (AFP) - Thai police said they had discovered six underfed tigers in specially-built cages on the roof of an apartment building on Monday, arresting a man who claimed he had been planning to open a zoo.

Four adult cats and two cubs were found at the property on an industrial estate in Pathumthani province, north of Bangkok, in the raid by police from Thailand's Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division.

A 28-year-old man, who lives in the building, was arrested at the scene and claimed to own the animals.

"The man said that he was preparing to open a zoo in the province", said police Captain Montri Neepasee, who said the animals had not been given enough food and did not look "completely healthy".

The tigers were fed with around 10,000 baht's worth ($322) of chicken bones a month.

"They did not get enough nutrients for their growth," Montri said, adding that the cubs were "stressed" in the small cages.

He said the owner of the building, a cousin of the arrested man, denied all knowledge of the caged tigers.

Montri added that the other occupants of the flats had apparently ignored the presence of the big cats on the roof.

"The renters are mostly factory workers and they do not seem to care about environmental issues," he said.

Police said that the tigers will be sent to an animal sanctuary in a nearby province on Tuesday.

A second officer involved in the case, Colonel Panpong Panklump, said the arrested man had been charged with illegal possession of wildlife, which carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

He added he believed the tigers would have been sent to Vietnam, where there is demand for "their meat and skins".

Thailand, a hub of international smuggling, is one of just 13 countries hosting fragile tiger populations. Worldwide, numbers are estimated to have fallen to only 3,200 tigers from approximately 100,000 a century ago.

In February police busted a grisly exotic wildlife slaughterhouse in Bangkok when officers caught four men in the act of chopping up a tiger in a residential home.

TWO diners have been given a lifetime ban from an all-you-can-eat restaurant for trying to eat all they could eat.

Andy Miles, 25 and George Dalmon, 26 claim they were called "pigs" by the manager of Gobi Mongolian Barbeque Restaurant in Brighton, UK after they ate five bowls of stir fry.

Mr Dalmon told the Daily Mail: "We have been eating there regularly for a couple of years but suddenly the owner came to our table and started going mental in front of the other customers."

"They only give you small bowls and you cannot get enough food in there so we always go back for more."

According to some comments on TripAdviser, the bowls are quite small – "the size of a tea cup". Still, the restaurant claims on its website you can eat as many bowls as you wish.

"Take it over to our grill where one of our chefs will cook your dish in front of you. Then repeat as many times as you wish. All for a set price of £12."

In their defence, the Barbeque restaurant’s manager says it was Dalmon and Mile’s manners rather than the quantity of their calorie intake that got them the boot.

"These two guys just come in and pig out. I have put up with them for two years but have had enough," the manager said.

"They spoil it for everyone else and are in such a hurry to get to the food so none of the other diners can get a look in. We are not a charity. We are a business. It is our restaurant and we can tell people not to come back if we want to."

So maybe you can eat all you can eat, as long as you eat it nicely.

Man enlarges penis, gets cancer

Doctors have warned people to avoid using the services of illegal clinics after a man was admitted to hospital with a possibly fatal genital infection, a consequence of a penis enlargement procedure.

A 50-year-old man whose name was withheld was admitted to the police hospital for treatment because his genitalia had swollen to the size of a coconut, a doctor said.

Pol Capt Dr Surat Kittisup-porn of the Police General Hospital said the man underwent a procedure to enlarge his penis at an illegal clinic about five years ago.

He was injected with olive oil, the doctor said.

The man’s genitals were working "just fine" until about six months ago. He suffered a cut to his penis and without proper treatment the wound became infected.

“He was ashamed to visit a doctor, but the pain and the infection grew so he had no choice,” the doctor told reporters.

He was admitted to a private hospital, where doctors found out that cancer has spread in the region. They suggested he move to a government hospital to save on the cost of treatment.

Doctors had no choice but to remove his penis, but the cancer spread towards his abdomen and his testicles.

Doctors have been able to bypass his urethra to his anus, allowing him to control his urine, but they are not optimistic about his future.

“The cancer and the wound was so severe when they brought him in,” Dr Surat said “There is a good chance that the cancer will spread again in the future,” he added.

Florida man who died after live cockroach eating contest choked: medical examiner

Edward Archbold choked to death on his own vomit after downing piles of bugs at a pet store contest last month, a medical examiner found.

The Florida man who collapsed and died last month after gobbling dozens of roaches and worms at an insect-eating contest choked to death, medical examiners found.

Edward Archbold, 32, gagged and heaved violently outside the Ben Siegel Reptile store in Deerfield Beach shortly after the Oct. 5 contest ended, as piles of bugs he had just eaten became lodged in his windpipe, the Broward County Medical Examiner said Monday.

Archbold died later at a hospital. Toxicology reports showed no lethal substances in his system, and the cause of death was listed as an accident, local WPTV reported.

Archbold, of West Palm Beach, was one of 30 contestants who participated in the bug noshing contest at the store, about 40 miles of north of Miami.

The grand prize was an expensive ball python.

All the contestants signed a waiver beforehand and were forbidden from drinking alcohol, the Sun Sentinel newspaper reported.

Ben Siegel, the shop’s owner, said the bugs the contestants ate were not wild, but raised in captivity as pet feed.

He told the Sun Sentinel that Archbold was “a super nice guy.”

"He was outgoing. He was the life of the party," Siegel said.
