No matter where you do it, it is illegal when you have 1. 2 or more players 2. gambling equipments (cards, dice etc. 3. money bets. by law, it's totally illegal if you have one or more players making money bets. BUT by tradition, especially at night at the funeral house, (esp in northern and isaan) "much people will come to the funeral house and play dammy , kau kae , kop Dam kop daeng , poker ,high-low, black jack for money" even police. i dont think that we can use forbidden in thailand. just exceptional, i guess

Neo
gambling, like chronic greed, is a cancer killing so many families in Thailand. Gambling is a losers game. Yes, seems to be a bit of a problem in Thailand. A friend was managing a guest house and he had trouble stopping the staff from playing cards at work. So every time they played cards he docked their pay. Eventually they were enthusiastically playing cards all day and getting no pay.

Admin_2
Gambling is fun as long as you know your limits...too many people don't know their limits and that's the problem. I prefer poker where you have an edge if you are better than the other players. All the other games like blackjack are rigged for the house to win...not much fun in that, but I still play them like a degenerate for fun. Know your limits, people, and never never never gamble in Thailand.
pandorea
When I was in a university in Thailand, I play Bridge and I even entered a university?s Bridge competition and I lost to an engineer student. Still upset till these days. Playing cards as a game is allowed.
maidai
playing cards/gambling is like prostitution in thailand, both are illegal, but who really follows any of those laws? playing cards is illegal, and some are trying to make some moral argument, so is prostitution, but im sure those who are so up in arms about playing cards are just as outraged about prostitution. :? Stramash
found this on the subject; Gambling is illegal in Thailand but people can still play cards in public areas, so long as they are not playing for money or property. In fact, people often play cards at the airport while waiting for a flight. People may play cards for forfeits, such as taking off their clothes or drinking or whatever, that is not a problem, but it is if there is money or property involved. Of course, even if we cannot see money changing hands during a game, we cannot be sure that the players aren?t playing for money or something similar ? such as meals or goods, for example. If a police officer cannot be sure that people are not playing for money or similar, he must stop them playing. If we don?t do this, we could end up with locals and tourists gambling all over the place. The reason why playing cards are sold so widely here is because there are still many people who use them for telling fortunes; they don?t buy them for gambling.? Thursday, June 9, 2005 Pol Col Teeraphol Thipjaroen, Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, (from Phuket Gazette) ah the delightful ambiguity of the Thai police!!!!
