World Cup fascist finals!

Recommended Posts

Congratulations to France on their victory over Brazil just minutes ago!

Going into the semi-finals, this makes the 2006 World Cup an all-European contest. In fact, thinking of Vichy France, Mussolini's Repulic, Nazi Germany and Salazar's Portugal, we might dub it FIFA's Fascist Finale! Who will take over the world in 2006?

Well well, I've been busy approving pics and so on and now I come back and see quite a kerfuffle!

Tasteless? Sure. I was thinking along the lines of John Cleese's Fawlty Towers, especially the "The Germans" episode. ("Don't mention the war!") Not of course nearly as funny, just inspiration.

Mussolini did call one of his governments (later on, once he had become just a puppet of Nazi Germany) Repubblica Sociale Italiana, a republic. The word "republic" has a long history in Europe going back to the Roman Republic, and has a lot of emotional and political meaning, hence is a good name to appropriate to your government whether or not you follow any values that might be called republican.

Also, fascism is not one and the same as Nazi Germany. Portugal remained neutral throughout World War 2, and even aided the allies a little. There were many many fascist movements throughout Europe in the early part of the 20th century, before World War 2. The ideology of fascism was attractive to many people throughout Europe prior to the second war. Mussolini was in power and subverting the democracy in Italy well before Hitler came into power. Fascism was tacitly and even openly supported among a sizable group of the British aristocracy. Collaboration in occupied Vichy France with the Nazis was extensive, a fact most people would prefer to forget. (Of course part of it was motivated by fear. But all of it? Ridding France of its Jews? No, that cannot all be blamed on fear.) What destroyed the illusions about fascism was World War 2 and the reality of what fascism could lead to as exemplified by Nazi Germany. But even after World War 2 ended, the fascist dictatorships of Portugal and Spain survived into the 1970s. Fascism is a far far more "grey" topic in European history than the easy black and white distinctions that have been made since World War 2 and the Holocaust. Its history went from grey prior to the second war to darkest black by the end.

sorry Ling no amount of waffle trying to justify ur original post is going to make what u said any better !!

facism is a nasty nasty philosophy and to tar 4 countries involved in the world cup semi finals as "facist" is at best tasteless and i personally would call insulting. especially for citizens of the 4 countries involved who are members of this website !!

especially surprised at u posting the original thread as u have tended to be a thoughful and reasonable moderater, but this one is way over the bounds of what i would consider reasonable or humourous !!

not even close to funny !!

right-wing = facism ... dictatorship

left-wing=communism... communist party

democracy=rule of the people

They're all corrupt due the greedy nature of mankind.

No perfect, nor ideal form of government has or ever will be found.

Evidenced by Thailand's current predicament.

Ohh is this about football?

byeeeee

Very hard Topic .

Iam mixed race , French and German , so i think : What a stupid Comment !! My Grandpa , French , died in the fighting Underground ! My Grandma , German , sit in Prison in the War !! Also 3 from her 7 Sons must work by german Wehrmacht , one from them in Hitlerjugend . My Father , was the youngest .

So here in Germany , after 60 years , we have no Nazis ! And Vichy in France ?

So lasst uns weiter Fussball spielen !! GPIF Grand Prix In Football !! Germany Portugal Italy France !! Who wins ?? Es ist mir SCHEISSEGAL !! Alle VIER liebe ICH !!

Not sure but I think ling_dtua_khaao got the response she intended to get?

And maybe some people are a bit too sensitive and need to grow up a bit.

Personally if someone calls me names I get excited naaa just kidding

But really it?s a game and competition is healthy.

think outside the square you live in :-)
