music
Tallis Scholars - Tallis: Lamentations of Jeremiah HEY!!! that's MY kinda music!! i have that CD too. Then you must also have, Tallis Scholars - Tallis: Spem In Alum did it once with a collegiate group back in bangkok. they sounded nowhere near tallis scholars but they loved the piece and so did i. Just before I left Japan in 1993 I snagged a ticket to see the Tallis Scholars. The program was Victoria's Requiem. It was a hot, stuffy June evening and I can remember being late running from the subway station to the performing hall. When I sat down, I was glistening with sweat and the Bermuda shorts didn't make it any easier for the people sitting next to me. Anyway, it was a brilliant program, well worth the 110 clams. music
yes. almost did Spem once with my group. managed to get the score just to realize i didn't have forty singers strong enough to stand alone on each part. also logistically and acoustically impossible to do it in our auditorium. :? the piece is still on my wish list, though. Oooh, I think Spem is the pinnacle of polyphony from that period. I would love to experience a live performance of that composition. In Bangkok or anywhere for that matter. i'm sure it was a great program. i got a buncha CD's by them but never heard them live. My favorite of the Tallis Scholars is, Palestrina: Missa Nigra Sum. The L'heritier motet on which the parody mass is based, to me that makes it a desert island pick. Zeus, good to be back, and of course, where else would you find Your Humble Narrator but mucking about in a thread related to music? Time for yoga.... music
1. Pinnock English Concert and Choir - Handel: Belshazzar (English oratorio) For Baroque music I prefer smaller ensemble pieces and I have a couple of Trevor Pinnock CDs because of the English Concert's use of period instruments. But the first time I heard them perform the Air movement of Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3, I said to myself, man, this is going to take a few spliffs before I get used to this! (sparse instrumentation on "traditionally" large ensemble arrangements coupled with minimal vibrato). It didn't take too long actually because I'd already prepared myself by listening to John Cale's sometimes ascerbic violin with Velvet Underground. And of course any Neil Young fan is usually ready for almost anything. LOL I'd be curious to hear the Schoenberg piece.
