zeusbheld
best widely available beer or ale: hoegaarden (belgium) best peculiar beer or ale: rodenbach best 'local' beer: beer lao. honorable mention to malaysian guiness. best cheap thai pisswater: leo. i don't despsie heineken but it is bland and overpriced for what you get (in that sense, just like its Dutch parent). yes Heineken is bad it doesn't have enough personality to be "bad' it's just nondescript. (boring beer is worse than bad beer IMO).
Administrator
My favorite kind of beer is free beer...even Heineken tastes great when it's free.
dannyboy
In the UK we have Heineken and Heineken export. IMO Heineken is liquid piss that should not even be considered as a Lager/beer..But on the other hand, Heineken Export on tap is an excellent brew and worthy of anyone's hang-over... (Can someone please tell me why Thais think it's hi-so to drink Heineken? The Heineken in Thailand is brewed under licence in Bangkok, it's not even imported! In all the times I have lived there I could never work it out...)
thaibel
Trappist beers are one of the most well-known products which Trappist monasteries produce and sell commercially. A Trappist beer is not the same as an Abbey beer for, of all the beers in the world, only seven may carry the name ?Trappist?: Achel, Chimay, La Trappe, Orval, Rochefort, Westvleteren, and Westmalle. You can recognize them by the "Authentic Trappist Product" logo. A ?Trappist? has to satisfy a number of strict criteria proper to this logo before it may bear this name: 1. The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. 2. The brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life 3. The brewery is not intended to be a profit-making venture. The income covers the living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Whatever remains is donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need. 4. Trappist breweries are constantly monitored to assure the irreproachable quality of their beers. Trappist breweries strictly comply with all health and safety standards as well as consumer information standards. Their advertising and communication is marked by honesty, soberness and a modesty proper to the religious setting in which the beer is brewed. So, don't mixed it up with an abbey beer (we call them so) like Leffe. These abbey beers are mostly of old recipes, but they can call themself Trappist. There are only seven brands in the world and six are brewed in Belgium. La Trappe is brewed in The Netherlands. My favourite beer is of course a Trappist, Westmalle Tripel. a clear, golden yellow Trappist beer that continues to ferment in the bottle for three weeks. It?s a complex beer with a fruity smell and a lovely, nuanced smell of hops. In the mouth, it?s soft and creamy with a bitter tang, partly due to the fruity aroma. An exceptional beer with finesse and elegance and a delightfully long afterglow. And of course I like Stella. It's brewed in my hometown, Leuven. Mazzy
Ok for the good ones. Now for a change, what are the worst kind of beers you've ever had? (Heineken seems to be in the lead, and no, plain warm beer doesn't count 'cause nobody likes that anyway). In my case: Labatt 50. Taste like a mixed of spoiled cough sirup and really cheap beer. Try at your own risk.
eagle
I've had to many great beer moments traveling from microbrewery to microbrewery. When I go to the bar I get Guinness or if I want more kick Sierra PAle Ale. Sam Adams if they don't have them, or a corona if they are a budweiser bar. US has alot of bars that serve nothing but bud, bush and miller lite. West Virginia is Bud Lite everywhere  best ever , you got to be kidding....... Stramash
FRAOCH!!!! My personal all time fave!!! Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture. Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented. A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish. Recommended with : Rich and Spicy foods Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass. 5% abv They also do gooseberry and wheat ale, scots pine ale, elderberry black ale, and seaweed ale. I reccomend trying them all!! http://www.fraoch.com/shop.htm
menospeakthai
Whats with all these poncy beers everone is recommending, beer drinking is not meant to be associated with the pretentious people who claim they know the difference between wines. And a lot of these beers are twice the price of a Stella or a Heineken Whoever said Corona as being a good beer has a very strong case, especially if you make it into a lady drink by adding a slice of lime. (Im not gay though) The pubs in England now have Carling COLD on tap, i believe its only about 4.2% in volume but is a very nice crisp pint and you wont get home and beat the Mrs up after 10 of them. Stramash
sorry this should be a Belgian thread only as we have the biggest brewery in the world (Inbev) and for such a small country we have the most different kinds of beer, we have even seasonal beer, like eastern beer ( Boskeun) and Christmas beer ( Dubbele Palm and others). We have beer made from cherry ( no not Atwood) from raspberries even from banana, but for me the most natural is beer made from barley and wheat, like Hoegaarden, now available in a lot of places in BKK. I do like Belgian beer, but disagree it should be Belgian thread only!!! After all, Scotland has oldest beer, the varieties I mentioned in my earlier post and although not beer, I do have a bottle of Banana wine from Perthshire!!!

You're right Ghee, anything brewed outside of Belgium (except for Holland of course) is not worth mentioning. Heineken is as far as I know the best sold beer or at least top three, Corona might be sold more MAYBE and of course it's because of smart marketing and positioning but it isn't bad beer at all, only brits and fled to Australia people disagree because non of their own brands come even close  But again PALM from Belgium is the best "regular" beer and it should be no.

I drank a beer I don't even remember the name of and I'm sure it isn't sold anywhere outside that one farm so it gotta be good... and interesting

LakeGeneve
Not much of a beer drinker but this is my favourite; No alcohol and lots of ginger & sugar. Not bad on a hot day.. But more of a fav is Root Beer (Sarsparilla in Oz) as the sassafras taste delights. (as I said , I'm not much of a beer drinker)
Mazzy
BTW, has anyone tried .... cider? Just wondering what it tastes like  Cider is very nice, light, sparkly and with an aftertaste of apple. A bit bitter too sometimes. Personally, I really enjoy it and even make my own. But as with any alcohol it's a matter of personal taste. Try it and see. As for those trying to turn the thread into one more nationalistic tournament, that's a bit pathetic. I've tasted a lot of beers, and I've had some very normal ones coming from Belgium, like I've had some terrific ones coming from places you wouldn't suspect. Times are changing and the traditional "beer" countries have had some great competition in the past few years.

Castlemaine XXXX is the most awful beer ever, before an England game i brought 8 cans to drink with my mate we had a sip of one each and decided to drink tea instead as it was so bad, its like carbonated water with a hint of beer flavouring,

Once they enjoy drinking VB , they never go back . Carlton Cold's ok , prefer Carlton's Pure Blonde though ( less carbs ) Castlemaine XXXX is the most awful beer ever, before an England game i brought 8 cans to drink with my mate we had a sip of one each and decided to drink tea instead as it was so bad, its like carbonated water with a hint of beer flavouring,Haven't had a XXXX since I was 16 while holidaying at the Gold Coast . As for fancy poncy beers i once had one called "Red Back" whilst in Perth it was very nice indeed.
