I've heard rumors about this on various forums, is it true? It must be if it's all over American and British news media. This is a new kind of crazy, even for Thailand. Oh...and did you hear about the 20 tourists who got robbed while on a bus from Chiangmai to Bkk? As an Aussie friend of mine might say: WTF Mate?!

we flew out at 8am thank god!

Hopefully you'll be able to get back in... Mind you, not sure why many people would WANT to come into this country at this point. And I think the tourism numbers are starting to show that. From what I'm reading, there have been some "battles" between the red-shirted idiots and the yellow-shirted idiots. Another reason for tourists to come here...

latest from BBC;

Thai anti-government protesters have opened fire on government supporters during clashes in Bangkok which left at least 11 people injured, officials say.

The incident came after the People's Alliance for Democracy blocked the road to the city's old airport in a renewed attempt to unseat the government.

The PAD said on Sunday it had begun a "final battle" to achieve the goal.

Meanwhile, PAD supporters have stormed Bangkok's main international airport, leading it to suspend outgoing flights.

Witnesses said hundreds of yellow-shirted members of the group managed to break through police lines and enter the main terminal of Suvarnabhumi airport, to the bewilderment of passengers.

Anyone who wants to overthrow or resist the government is attempting a rebellion

The airport's manager, Serirat Prasutanon, said the authorities had tried to negotiate with the protesters, "but to no avail".

"For the safety of passengers, we have to stop flights out of the airport temporarily until the situation returns to normal," he told the Associated Press.

Exactly what the protesters hope to do there is not clear, the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says, but they may be hoping to prevent Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat from returning from the Apec summit in Peru on Wednesday.

Mr Somchai told reporters in Lima: "Anyone who wants to overthrow or resist the government is attempting a rebellion."

'Final battle'

Earlier, Thai TPBS television broadcast pictures of the violence on the main road to the capital's old airport. The footage showed shots being fired from a truck into crowds after rocks were thrown.

Thousands of people are taking part in anti-government protests

At least two handguns could be seen and people standing with the gunmen raised up a picture of the revered Thai king, whom the PAD claim to be supporting.

Protesters could be seen running across the empty multi-lane road and setting fire to a motorbike.

A man was also seized by pro-government supporters and what appeared to be a large knife was held to his throat.

TPBS said its cameraman had been threatened at the scene and that PAD personnel attempted to seize his tape.

On Monday, PAD protesters converged on Bangkok's old Don Muang international airport, from where the cabinet has been operating since its offices were occupied three months ago.

Organisers say the protest is a "final battle" to bring down the government.

Our correspondent says the government appears to have followed a strategy of allowing PAD to attack government buildings while avoiding clashes, in the hope that it will wear the protesters down.

The government has so far resisted calling in the army. Analysts says it is a thinly disguised aim of the PAD to provoke such a move.

The PAD are determined to create drama but many ordinary Thais are sick of the unrest and the protesters appear to be losing steam, says our correspondent

I wonder if anyone can ever calculate the loss to Thailand. I have a feeling that things are only just beginning. Wait for the economy to crash...

The "soft approach" the government has been taking has worked somewhat... But you can see that the PAD are more than willing to ratchet up the stunts/violence... When is "enough" enough? When will the police and army FINALLY step in and say "This is ridiculous"? Everytime I see pics of Sondhi L and his "bishops, knights and rooks", I feel physically ill. I'm not saying that the red shirts/republicans are any better in any way... But Sondhi L and company sending their "pawns" into battle while having NO solutions to ANY of the problems the country is facing... What's the point? I sincerely hope the PAD leaders get what is coming to them in the future.

Mark, the latest news from my friend AlexMF, he is at airport now. Someone was open a gun fire against taxi car! 10 minutes ago.

Final Solutiion? Close PAD immediately, arrest leaders and put situation to the end. More than 4 month fights, how much country lose already, and how much lose in Christmas season... In case of dollar rising any trip to Thailand for our people costs 20 percent more, but if then will be a real danger to life, many tourists will cancel their holidays...

With the yellow shirts it should be an easy target for the bullets, Hopefully they have cleaned up before I arrive in 10 days.

We could only be so lucky... Too bad the PAD leaders will be WAY back from the frontlines.

So? Still easy to find. Cut off the head and the body will soon lose steam.

I wish it was that easy. The PAD have shown what they do when one of their "pawns" gets offed. They turn them into a martyr. Can't imagine how much more they'd react if one of the higher ranked "pieces" got his head blown off.

Agree with both. They are sitting ducks now, not only for the enforcement of the law, but for their much more numerous opponents...

The lack of action has puzzled me, but now I think I can see the motive.

The gov't has been trying to wear the PAD down over time. A "war of attrition" so to speak. I'm sure that the middle-aged women at Gov't House must be thinking how much nicer it would be to have a good night's sleep in a real bed. I've seen pics of Gov't House and it looks to be a ******* slum. The closing down of the airport is certainly going WAY over the line. There's only so much people can take. Can't imagine the majority of Bangkokians, let alone Thais, supporting the PAD on THIS one (as evidenced by the lack of PAD supporters posting on this thread.)

I am extremely disappointed in the PAD. I thought they could perhaps pressure the government and try to peacefully bring about change, but as with all such protests, when it becomes drawn out, the ones who are left end up being the lunatics, who are then only a stones throw (in this case litteraly) from raising the level of violence with gunshots fired.

The fools are doing exactly what the government wants them to do - there are two things going on here, with the same aim...

1. Allow the general public to be inconvenienced and screwed about by the protesters, leave it going long enough and they will lose support because the public will get very sick of the disturbance to their lifestyle etc

2. When things seem so dire that no-one can work out how to fix it, the government invites Thaksin back to clear it all up. Grants him a pardon and we are back where we started...

I used to think the PAD were reasonably intelligent...why are they being so ******* dumb now?

Desperate measures from desperate people.

A friend of mine tried to go to the airport tonight to catch his Thai Airways flight to Johannesburg. He couldn't make it to his flight and had to return home. In the meantime, he will lose the money he paid online for the hotel for his first night in Jo'burg; he will miss his connecting flight the next day; and he will lose income because he is paid only for the days that he is on the job site. Who is going to pay for all of his losses? PAD? He said he used to support the PAD, but not anymore. They are using the wrong tactics now.

If this was not so serious it would be fooking hilarious! Such idiots and fools. The PAD are a rent a mob created for and by various puppet masters pulling the strings and manipulating the people by creating such division and insanity as to make anything possible.

It has nothing to do with MR T and that was only ever a smoke screen to make a grab for power.

Basically as I said before, THAILAND IS FOOOOKED!

The project to divide the nation has been a total success and so there is no compromise or rational thought left. Things will only get much much worse. I was going to go for a holiday and take a chance that it would be ok, but now it has become too risky.

The irony is that the idiotic PAD and it'ssupporters have no idea how bad things will be for them further down the line- where this is headed is some sort of major upheaval and when the king dies [as he will as matter of time and fact] all hell will break lose

hehe

granma called today, second time in 3 months. She was worried if I am still alive as they are showing in Finnish tv all this sh*t from Bangkok. I told her not to worry it is this huuuuge growd of 20 000 people, some of them brought with buses from south to participate in this pro-Thailand event where they employ weapons and taking over buses to show how much they love the King while waving his pics and wearing yellow shirts. By this they show their appreciation on the fact how the royal family is above politics, by actually well, dragging them in. So cool I said to her. I told her not to worry, it is ok to take over airports and government buildings. it all shows how much this small group really loves the country. I calmed her down finally by saying that she cant possibly understand any of this as she is, like I am, a foreigner and we just are not sharing any DNA with the locals, as Thais are not same kind of people. They are totally different from the rest of the planet. So, mai bpen rai I told her, no need to understand. It just is...Thailand.

PAD FOREVER! PAD FOREVER! LONG LIVE THE KING! PAD IS FOR THE THAI PEOPLE! PAD IS FOR THE KING! YELLOW SHIRTS FOREVER!!!!
