Stramash Posted February 20, 2009 Report Share Posted February 20, 2009 After a little gentle teasing of my good friend Iain_D, I was contacted by the Mods as I had broken a rule.I enjoy the forums, but the SPIRIT of the rules must be more important than the letter. Iain and I never take offence at each other's jibes. It's just fun. I appreciate the difficulties faced by the Mods - if I get away with breaking a rule because it was in jest, won't other people cry favouritism? Will other posters do the same thing maliciously and then claim immunity as English_bob did it before? I guess it comes down to that word 'maliciously'. If someone complains, the Mods would be obligated to investigate and possibly take action. How, then, to administer the rules and maintain the fun of the forums? I had an idea last night - perhaps a 'No-Holds-Barred' Forum category. One that comes with a health warning and a disclaimer. One in which consenting adults share ideas, arguments, insults and fun without censorship (Thai Royal Family being the exception). Would anyone contribute? Would people open themselves to potential abuse if it gave them the freedom to write whatever they truly felt? As Jay rightly pointed out, there are new mods still finding their feet; we have good cop Nicky, fair to all but will unleash her dark side if pushed too far, and bad cop Danyyboy von Barsteward-Stalin who just jumps down your throat like a crack addict with pms. But even this adds to the site in its own disturbing way. A card is a card; 3 days off site to penance, a few hail Marys and a couple of hows your fathers (and I should know lol) You lose your temper and get abusive and you are sent to the 3 day sin bin. Personally I think there can still be heated debate and controversy on here; the Gaza Strip being a good example. Most of the mods will not issue a card unless someone is really offensive, calls admin gay or posts pictures of willys (I thought it was just the dog in the pic, honest your honour), while fake profiles, sexual predators and their ilk will be, quite rightly, banned. I think what it comes down to is; if you think the site is 'too tame' for you now, well to quote that great Irish philosopher Ciaran M 'Why don't you just f**king f**k off' Go and spend a couple of months on thaivisa, the mogadon of Thai sites, and see how tame you feel TF is after 2 months of navel gazing... The T&C is about as vague as is possible... Rules are usually better when they're somewhat definite. If they're vague (as is the case now) the "subjects of country" haven't got a clue and the authorities are JUST as clueless. Makes for a lot of guesswork and "I don't need to explain myself to you" enforcement. I never said that Admin was doing a lousy job. I'm saying the site is fatally flawed due to the T&C. If that problem doesn't get solved, expect more and more bitching from members (unless there's a chance of an election in the so-called dictatorship.) I don't buy the "we need to tone it down because the Thais are intimidated" line of bullshit either. Talk about patronizing... Lots of people in the forums are assholes... If a person isn't "allowed" to deal with an a**hole in a forum, how will they deal with one in person? I've definitely noticed a slowdown in posting from some of the more "interesting" members on this site. We are asking for input and are getting some good input today from you thanks to LakeGeneve bringing this up. Before it was others saying that it was under-moderated. As Jay said, a firm ground will be found as long as input keeps coming in. theres been plenty of input. Anyone whose been here for a while can see the change and how tedious forums have become, largely because of trigger happy mods and WAY too much interference. Maybe its just going through a lull in it evolution. But i know myself i have become much more guarded due to the obvious conservative ruling here now. Its boring. And even discussing this is as tedious as disecting a joke punch line. And i agree with MM about the rules.,er non rules...which by all mods admitions are not followed except, obviously by whim or mood. Fact is, most of the interesting people are just bored and gone or banned. Youve squeezed the life out of it, by trying to do the 'right' thing. Maybe 90% of them. How many people can walk into a room full of people and start engaging total strangers in conversation? I suppose it depends on how drunk everyone is. Getting emails from people who weren't too chatty at an event doesn't seem rude or strange to me. If anything, it suggests that their initial shyness in person got the better of them, and they want to make up for it. I'm sure Marco's a splendid chap, but a little thin-skinned. If he'd understand that other people are just as nervous outside their own circle of friends as he is, he might understand people's reactions better. Even if you've 'frozen' when you met someone - usually it's the opposite sex - an e-mail is a chance to start all over. At least you've met them already, no matter how awkward the first contact was. So here's my suggestion to Marco. Don't presume they were arrogant or off-hand, presume they felt shy or awkward. Take the e-mail as a sign that, despite their initial awkwardness, they saw something they liked in you. Otherwise, why would they write to you? Use the e-mail as a chance to start over and start a dialogue/friendship. The end result? The next time you go to a TF event, you have things to talk about and some knowledge about each other. But it's up to Marco himself. He can just go on feeling slighted, imagining he's the only sensitive or shy person in the room. Sounds familiar. there's always slowdowns in posting but i think this one has more of a death rattle to it than previously. with all that said you are being treated like children but then a lot of you act like children. chicken and egg, not sure too late and too much alcohol. you should be responsible for moderating your own comments and be responsible for telling each other when you're being oversensitive and whiny. sometimes you should tell each other sternly without fear of censorship, sadly it always becomes a bit of a sh*t show There is a fairly consistent theme in your responses which feels both patronising and condesending. This is a shame given that someone with your experience could actually perhaps be more constructive in this discussion and without also projecting a certain 'I know it all' disposition. Though you have responded to a few specifics with some topical reflection, you seem more concerned with labelling everyone in a fairly negative manner. This is confusing to me when there is such a diverse bunch on TF with a even wider range of interests and motivations for being part of the TF community. Thankfully Rob has displayed more of a willingness to listen even if he does not agree with all views. The posts of a few reflect some similar concerns regarding self-censorship but then the silence from the majority perhaps indicates that this is a change which most are happy with and accept with their ongoing contributions. Though no new mods have commented on point, hopefully we all have taken on board other views working from the premise that all are attempting to improve the site in our respective roles.
